Saturday will be the final burnoff spot for the show. Since its low debut on May 28 the six-part docu-series about the NYC borough has tanked in the ratings on Tuesday nights. Brooklyn D.A.was down 23% from the premiere last year of docu-series Dogs In The City on May 30, 2012. The show fell 20% in its second week and was down 14% to a 0.6/2 this week from that June 5 show.

The question is - will I continue to review the show, now that it's being relegated to the television graveyard?

Just for you, dear readers, yes. I will review the last three episodes.

That's what kind of a guy I am.

Some interesting news on the GMO front:

Consumers Will Soon Have Devices In Their Hands To Detect GMO and Toxic Foods

by Marco Torres, preventdiesease.com

In the not too distant future, consumers will be able to run on-the-spot tests for environmental toxins, GMOs, pesticides, food safety and more with their smartphones and other hand-held devices.

Every human being on every developed nation on Earth, whether living in a rural or isolated area, in the middle of a large city, or near an industrialized area, now contains at least 700 contaminants in their body including pesticides, pthalates, benzenes, parabens, xylenes and many other carcinogenic and endrocrine disrupting chemicals.

We are being bombarded on a daily basis by an astronomical level of toxicity, all controlled by chemical terrorists on behalf of the food industry. Morever, many of these toxins affect our fertility and those of successive generations.

It’s time for people to know exactly what they are putting in their bodies and technology is coming to the rescue. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign researchers have developed a cradle and app that uses a phone’s built-in camera and processing power as a biosensor to detect toxins, proteins, bacteria, viruses and other molecules.

“We’re interested in biodetection that needs to be performed outside of the laboratory,” said team leader Brian Cunningham, a professor of electrical and computer engineering and of bioengineering at Illinois. “Smartphones are making a big impact on our society — the way we get our information, the way we communicate. And they have really powerful computing capability and imaging. A lot of medical conditions might be monitored very inexpensively and non-invasively using mobile platforms like phones. They can detect molecular things, like pathogens, disease biomarkers or DNA, things that are currently only done in big diagnostic labs with lots of expense and large volumes of blood.”

“Modern biological research is also allowing an extension of laboratory devices on to small computer chips to detect biological information within DNA sequences,” said biotech specialist Dr. Marek Banaszewski. “Bioinformatic algorithms within programs will aid the identification of transgenes, promoters, and other functional elements of DNA, making detection of genetically modified foods on-the-spot and real-time without transportation to a laboratory.”

The wedge-shaped cradle created by Cunningham’s team contains a series of optical components — lenses and filters — found in much larger and more expensive laboratory devices. The cradle holds the phone’s camera in alignment with the optical components.

At the heart of the biosensor is a photonic crystal. A photonic crystal is like a mirror that only reflects one wavelength of light while the rest of the spectrum passes through. When anything biological attaches to the photonic crystal — such as protein, cells, pathogens or DNA — the reflected color will shift from a shorter wavelength to a longer wavelength.

The entire test takes only a few minutes; the app walks the user through the process step by step. Although the cradle holds only about $200 of optical components, it performs as accurately as a large $50,000 spectrophotometer in the laboratory. So now, the device is not only portable, but also affordable for fieldwork in developing nations.

In a paper published in the journal Lab on a Chip, the team demonstrated sensing of an immune system protein, but the slide could be primed for any type of biological molecule or cell type. The researchers are working to improve the manufacturing process for the iPhone cradle and are working on a cradle for Android phones as well. They hope to begin making the cradles available next year.

In addition, Cunningham’s team is working on biosensing tests that could be performed in the field to detect toxins in harvested corn and soybeans, and to detect pathogens in food and water.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Modular Solid State Technologies EMFT in Regensburg have also engineered an ingenius solution to detecting toxins – a glove that recognizes if toxic substances are present in the surrounding air.

The protective glove is equipped with custom-made sensor materials and indicates the presence of toxic substances by changing colors. In this regard, the scientists adapted the materials to the corresponding analytes, and thus, the application. The color change — from colorless (no toxic substance) to blue (toxic substance detected). The researchers also envision other potential applications for the glove in the food industry.

Other handheld devices currently in development are portable chemiluminescence detectors, but based on enzyme-catalyzed reactions emitting light. The detection devices for nucleic acids, biotin associated with the target DNA provides the handle for the chemiluminescent detection. The non-radioactive DNA detection chemistry will be able to readily identify single-copy genes in transgenic plants making them suitable for GMO detection.

Marco Torres is a research specialist, writer and consumer advocate for healthy lifestyles. He holds degrees in Public Health and Environmental Science and is a professional speaker on topics such as disease prevention, environmental toxins and health policy.

So keep your stupid labeling - we will know, one way or another, about your stupid FrankenFoods.

What has me going on a tear reagding GMOs?

I'll tell you - it's that who you refer to as GMO "scientists" are in reality nothing but QUACKS.

A real scientist would understand that one cannot add genes into an organism without some effects that are unwanted or unanticipated.

I'm certain, that at some point, all of you have taken chemistry.

Chemistry is NOT LIKE addition. You don't simply add substance A to substance B, and get substance AB - you can get substance C, which may lack the properties of either former substance.

You can get much worse.

Food is digested and absorbed through the digestive system, which then migrates the received vitamins and minerals to where they will do the most good. At least, that's what our foods used to offer to us.

GMO foods are all hat and no cattle.

GMO foods may resemble food, but they utterly fail upon ingestion.

Many of the maladies that now plague us were borne in the time of the introduction of GMOs to our food supply.

How can I be so certain about GMOs not being able to offer the same amount of nutrition that conventional and organic crops have to offer?

Easy.

It's by the method that GMOs proffer to offer protection against weeds, insects and the like - chelation.

The process of chelation involves rendering beneficial compounds inaccessible to the organism. From Wikipedia's Glyphosate page:

Glyphosate's mode of action is to inhibit an enzyme involved in the synthesis of the aromatic amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine. There are convincing differences between organic and GMO foods in nutrient content and health benefits.

Higher antioxidant levels, lower pesticide loads, better farming practices all lead to a more nutritious end product when choosing organic over GMO foods.

For example, tomatoes grown by organic methods contain more phenolic compounds than those grown using commercial standards. There are as many health risks associated with the consumption of wheat as there are nutritional benefits claimed by the wheat industry. Why is there such a strong emphasis on the development of wheat products all over the world when there are so many adverse and crippling effects such as neurological impairment, dementia, heart disease, cataracts, diabetes, arthritis and visceral fat accumulation, not to mention the full range of intolerances and bloating now experienced by millions of people?

Approximately 700 million tons of wheat are now cultivated worldwide making it the second most-produced grain after maize. It is grown on more land area than any other commercial crop and is considered a staple food for humans.

At some point in our history, this ancient grain was nutritious in some respects, however modern wheat really isn’t wheat at all. Once agribusiness took over to develop a higher-yielding crop, wheat became hybridized to such an extent that it has been completely transformed from it’s prehistorical genetic configuration. All nutrient content of modern wheat depreciated more than 30% in its natural unrefined state compared to its ancestral genetic line. The balance and ratio that mother nature created for wheat was also modified and human digestion and physiology could simply could not adapt quick enough to the changes.

The Nutrional Value of Wheat is Practically Non-Existent In Its Current Form

So-called health experts in nutrition who continue to promote the health benefits of wheat are extremely uninformed about the nature of modern wheat and its evolution from growth to consumption. It is shocking how many professionals in public health still recommend wheat products without an assessment of their individual requirements, especially considering the amount of evidence regarding its lack of nutrition and health risks for proportionally large segments of the population.

The majority of wheat is processed into 60% extraction, bleached white flour. 60% extraction–the standard for most wheat products means that 40% of the original wheat grain is removed. So not only do we have an unhealthier, modified, and hybridized strain of wheat, we also remove and further degrade its nutritional value by processing it. Unfortunately, the 40% that gets removed includes the bran and the germ of the wheat grain–its most nutrient-rich parts. In the process of making 60% extraction flour, over half of the vitamin B1, B2, B3, E, folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, iron, and fiber are lost. Any processed foods with wheat are akin to poison for the body since they cause more health risks than benefits. The body does not recognize processed wheat as food. Nutrient absorption from processed wheat products is thus consequential with almost no nutritional value.

Some experts claim if you select 100% whole wheat products, the bran and the germ of the wheat will remain in your meals, and the health benefits will be impressive. This is again a falsity promoted by the wheat industry since even 100% whole wheat products are based on modern wheat strains created by irradiation of wheat seeds and embryos with chemicals, gamma rays, and high-dose X-rays to induce mutations. Whether you consume 10% or 100% of wheat is irrelevant since you’re still consuming a health damaging grain that will not benefit, advance or even maintain your health in any way.

Dr. Marcia Alvarez who specializes in nutritional programs for obese patients says that when it comes to nutrition, wheat may be considered as an evil grain. “Modern wheat grains could certainly be considered as the root of all evil in the world of nutrition since they cause so many documented health problems across so many populations in the world.” Dr. Alvarez asserted that wheat is now responsible for more intolerances than almost any other food in the world. “In my practice of over two decades, we have documented that for every ten people with digestive problems, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, arthritis and even heart disease, eight out of ten have a problem with wheat. Once we remove wheat from their diets, most of their symptoms disappear within three to six months,” she added. Dr. Alvarez estimates that between the coming influx of genetically modified (GM) strains of wheat and the current tendency of wheat elimination in societies, that a trend is emerging in the next 20 years that will likely see 80% of people cease their consumption of wheat from any form.

Genetic Modification

The GM wheat currently being tested for approval for production in Canada is a new variety of hard red spring wheat which has been genetically engineered to be tolerant to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup. Monsanto Canada Inc. requested the approval of GE wheat from Health Canada in July 2002 and for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in December 2002.

In July 2009, the most hated company in the world Monsanto, announced new research into GM wheat and industry groups kicked their promotion of GM wheat into high gear. “Widespread farmer and consumer resistance defeated GM wheat in 2004 and this global rejection remains strong, as demonstrated by today’s statement,” said Lucy Sharratt, Coordinator of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network.

There are now even claims by researchers in Australia have developed a form of salt-tolerant wheat that will allow farmers to grow crops in soil with high salinity. They created the new form of wheat by crossing a modern strain with an ancient species, and the researchers believe this new super-wheat will allow farmers to grow more food crops on land previously thought to be off limits to agriculture. Critics suggest that new strains will be foreign to current ecological systems and will be unsustainable without massive chemical intervention.

Industry claims that the introduction of GM wheat will lead to a reduction in herbicide use, a claim that has been made prior to the introduction of other herbicide tolerant (HT) crops such as Roundup Ready (RR) soybeans, canola and corn. These claims have been contradicted by US government statistics that show that GM HT crops such as RR crops use more pesticides than conventional crops. These state GM crops can receive as much as 30 percent more herbicide than non-GM crops. Not only do GM crops use more pesticides but they also force the farmer to purchase one single brand of herbicide, in this case Monsanto brand Roundup.

If introduced, GE wheat will enter farmers’ rotations along with the already HT canola and soybeans. This compounds the issue of superweeds as each crop sown would be HT, so any seed that fell from the crop before harvest would pose a threat of becoming an uncontrollable weed, or contained by using increasingly toxic herbicides. How can we believe that pesticide use will decrease with GE wheat?

These developments are also taking place in the United States which is the third largest wheat producer in the world. Fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and growth regulators are all becoming more chemically potent and their frequency of application continues to increase every 5 years. American scientists are currently developing GM strains of wheat conferring resistance to fungal diseases. Wheat is becoming such a transmutated grain, that it someday may not even be called wheat.

Health Effects

A powerful little chemical in wheat known as ‘wheat germ agglutinin’ (WGA) which is largely responsible for many of wheat’s pervasive, and difficult to diagnose, ill effects. Researchers are now discovering that WGA in modern wheat is very different from ancient strains. Not only does WGA throw a monkey wrench into our assumptions about the primary causes of wheat intolerance, but due to the fact that WGA is found in highest concentrations in “whole wheat,” including its supposedly superior sprouted form, it also pulls the rug out from under one of the health food industry’s favorite poster children.

Each grain of wheat contains about one microgram of Wheat Germ Agglutinin (WGA). Even in small quantities, WGA can have profoundly adverse effects. It may be pro-inflammatory, immunotoxic, cardiotoxic … and neurotoxic.

Below the radar of conventional serological testing for antibodies against the various gluten proteins and genetic testing for disease susceptibility, the WGA “lectin problem” remains almost entirely obscured. Lectins, though found in all grains, seeds, legumes, dairy and our beloved nightshades: the tomato and potato, are rarely discussed in connection with health or illness, even when their presence in our diet may greatly reduce both the quality and length of our lives. Yet health experts dismiss the links between disease and wheat despite all the evidence.

Dr. William Davis has documented several hundred clinical studies on the adverse effects of wheat. These are studies that document the neurologic impairments unique to wheat, including cerebellar ataxia and dementia; heart disease; visceral fat accumulation and all its attendant health consequences; the process of glycation via amylopectin A of wheat that leads to cataracts, diabetes, and arthritis; among others. There are, in fact, a wealth of studies documenting the adverse, often crippling, effects of wheat consumption in humans.

The other claim is that wheat elimination ‘means missing out on a wealth of essential nutrients. Another falsity. Dr. Davis states that if you replace wheat with healthy foods like vegetables, nuts, healthy oils, meats, eggs, cheese, avocados, and olives, then there is no nutrient deficiency that develops with elimination of wheat. Dr. Davis also states that people with celiac disease may require long-term supplementation due to extensive gastrointenstinal damage caused by wheat.

People with celiac disease do indeed experience deficiencies of multiple vitamins and minerals after they eliminate all wheat and gluten from the diet. But this is not due to a diet lacking valuable nutrients, but from the incomplete healing of the gastrointestinal tract (such as the lining of the duodenum and proximal jejunum). In these people, the destructive effects of wheat are so overpowering that, unfortunately, some people never heal completely. These people do indeed require vitamin and mineral supplementation, as well as probiotics and pancreatic enzyme supplementation.

Due to the unique properties of amylopectin A, two slices of whole wheat bread increase blood sugar higher than many candy bars. High blood glucose leads to the process of glycation that, in turn, causes arthritis (cartilage glycation), cataracts (lens protein glycation), diabetes (glycotoxicity of pancreatic beta cells), hepatic de novo lipogenesis that increases triglycerides and, thereby, increases expression of atherogenic (heart disease-causing) small LDL particles, leading to heart attacks. Repetitive high blood sugars that develop from a grain-rich diet are, in my view, very destructive and lead to weight gain (specifically visceral fat), insulin resistance, leptin resistance (leading to obesity), and many of the health struggles that many now experience.

Wheat gliadin has been associated with cerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, gluten encephalopathy (dementia), behavioral outbursts in children with ADHD and autism, and paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations in people with schizophrenia, severe and incapacitating effects for people suffering from these conditions.

According to statistics from the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center, an average of one out of every 133 otherwise healthy people in the United States suffers from CD. However, an estimated 20-30 percent of the world’s population may carry the genetic susceptibility to celiac disease–and the way to avoid turning these genes ‘on’ is by avoiding gluten.

When you consider that undiagnosed CD is associated with a nearly four-fold increased risk of premature death, the seriousness of this food sensitivity becomes quite evident. The primary disease mechanism at play is chronic inflammation, and chronic inflammatory and degenerative conditions are endemic to grain-consuming populations.

Changes in genetic code and, thereby, antigenic profile, of the high-yield semi-dwarf wheat cultivars now on the market account for the marked increase in celiac potential nationwide. “Hybridization” techniques, including chemical mutagenesis to induce selective mutations, leads to development of unique strains that are not subject to animal or human safety testing–they are just brought to market and sold.

Author and preventive cardiologist William Davis, MD, wheat’s new biochemical code causes hormone disruption that is linked to diabetes and obesity. “It is not my contention that it is in everyone’s best interest to cut back on wheat; it is my belief that complete elimination is in everyone’s best health interests,” says Dr. Davis, “In my view, that’s how bad this thing called ‘wheat’ has become.”

Chemical mutagenesis using the toxic mutagen, sodium azide, of course, is the method used to generate BASF’s Clearfield herbicide-resistant wheat strain. These methods are being used on a wide scale to generate unique genetic strains that are, without question from the FDA or USDA, assumed to be safe for human consumption.

Wheat-Free Options

* Note that many of the wheat-free options still contain gluten.

1. Cereal Grains: Barley, millet, oats, rice, rye, sorghum, tef and wild rice are all in the same cereal grain family as is wheat. All flours ground from cereal grains may be used as a wheat substitute. Commonly available are barley, buckwheat, rice and rye flour. The less utilized flours may be purchased online or from natural food stores. Note: people with a gluten allergy must also avoid barley, oats and rye.

2. Non-Cereal Grains: Amaranth, quinoa and buckwheat are three grain-like seeds unrelated to cereal grains. (Despite its name, buckwheat is not a wheat-relative.) It is rare for anyone to develop a sensitivity to these non-cereal grains. Amaranth, quinoa and buckwheat are gluten-free and therefore not suitable for making leavened bread; however, they make excellent quick breads and cookies.

3. Nut Meal: Ground nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts or walnuts make the richest flour substitute for cookies and cakes. Because their fragile fatty acid content gives them a brief shelf life, it’s preferable to grind your own nuts in a food processor just prior to use. Nut meal requires a binding agent such as eggs. Because chestnuts are lower in fat than other nuts, chestnut flour has a longer shelf life. It is available online.

4. Bean Flour: Dried beans, such as navy, pinto and chickpeas may be milled and used, in combination with other flours, as a wheat alternative. Bean flour is, however, not always recommended. It tastes like beans and makes baked goods dense and hard to digest.

5. Other Flour Substitutes: Potato starch, arrowroot powder, and tapioca are thickening agents that substitute for wheat in sauces and gravy. In baked goods these starchy ingredients serve as a binding agent.

Due to the irresponsible high frequency hybridization, processing and inevitable genetic modification of modern wheat, there is only one solution for the health and wellness of future generations. Stop eating wheat and educate as many people as you can on the coming strains of this grain which will be much more deadly than they already are today.

About the Author

Natasha Longo has a master’s degree in nutrition and is a certified fitness and nutritional counselor. They’ve bought up all those small seed companies to control those seed varieties of wheat, of rice, of corn and soy beans and so forth. Secondly, Monsanto bought up a company that gives Monsanto a patent on what are called Terminator Seeds, which self-destruct, the seeds commit suicide after one harvest season. So, farmers are unable to take part of their seeds and replant them for the next harvest season – something that never in history has been possible before this Monsanto development.

The overall picture is much worse than just the American farmers being wiped out. I think that time would have been better spent explaining the wrongful conviction of John Guica, for example; or how about why Jabbar Collins spent 16 years in jail for a crime he didn't commit; but be it far from me to tell these guys how to do their job.

But...what was the job here?

To recap - Asia Ross is lured into prostitution at the ripe young age of 14...she is then rescued...but what then?

She was supposed to land on her own two feet? Imagine that.

No one in the office figured out that their "Sharpe" was related to that "Sharpe"?

That's pretty implausible...but not as implausible as the legal advice the younger Sharpe received. "Civil-rights and racial-bias violations"? I could've tried that case better. Mock trial isn't exactly Model Congress, but it's pretty fun in its own way.

Episode Two of Brooklyn D.A. has come and gone. We were privy to:

The resolution of the Peter Figoski case;

More on the Danny Vega art theft case (apparently, this is the "show" piece of the cases);

The case of Dr. Oleg Davie, who allegedly performed an ill-advised liposuction procedure on Isol Pineda, which resulted in her death

Lamont Pride shouldn't be proud of the 3 interviews he gave which documented three different scenarios in which Officer Figoski was shot under his left eye. The defense never contested the shooting, only that he never meant to kill Figoski.

With a charge of aggravated murder, the jury deliberated for three days. He was found guilty, along with three other defendants (the driver was acquitted), but not of intentional murder. After hearing from Officer Figoski's family during the sentencing, Pride was given 45 years-to-life. He was asked if he would like to make a statement; incredibly, he apologized to his own family, saying that the "would stand tall".

Wow. Not a hint of remorse.

Obviously, Judge Maris imposed the harshest sentence possible. From what has been presented, I don't disagree.

That being said, there was some mention of Officer Figoski's partner, Officer Glen Estrada, possibly having issue with the facts of that evening. As it was, Lamont Pride apparently didn't deny attempting to murder Officer Figoski, only that he didn't "mean" to murder him.

Laurence Oh is attempting to channel Columbo. He sets up a meet with the Zimmer brothers and is successful in getting them to go along with the big sting. Danny Vega apparently has even more aliases than previously mentioned; he has a residence in Pennsylvania as well as in Brooklyn, but that doesn't do him any good, as first his pregnant girlfriend is spotted, followed shortly by the elusive Mr. Vega himself.

The cameras are being set up at the sting house, but Laurence has to return to the courthouse for an afternoon appointment, and can't be there for the final setup. He arrives the next day, only to find that some of the cameras are utterly obvious.

Apparently, this case is being nuanced the most - we don't see any more in regards to this case, but we are teased with video of Vega purportedly checking out the artwork within minutes of entering the house. Once again, I have to wonder if there weren't other cases that deserved more attention, or were more pertinent to the idea of the show; you know - more about Brooklyn, maybe? Of course, crime is crime, but I can't help but to think that this hardly relates to the majority of the denizens of Brooklyn. We'll see more next week.

The new case presented to us this week highlights an incredible and completely avoidable tragedy.

Isn't a human life more important than monetary gain?

I believe that Dr. Oleg Davie would disagree with my assessment.

He operated from a Park Avenue office, as well as one in Manhattan Beach. The latter location is where he encountered Isol Pineda, a former model. She filled out the customary medical history form, which in her case, indicated that she had suffered congestive heart failure eight years earlier, in which she received a new heart, courtesy of renowned television medical specialist Dr. Oz. A picture of Isol displayed an obvious scar left over from the operation.

Her brother, Anam, received a phone call from his office, directing him to Coney Island hospital. Twenty-five minutes later, a second phone call revealed that she had expired.

It was determined that the medical form submitted to insurance had been doctored, in an attempt to absolve Dr. Davie from responsibility in the failed liposuction. A copy retained by Isol revealed the truth.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Brooklyn D.A. himself, Charles "Joe" Hynes, appeared in this segment.

The altered documentation proved the charge of reckless endangerment, along with several other charges, but we won't know of Davie's fate until next year - he was ordered to surrender his medical license last year.

Her brother has gathered Isol's belongings and remembers her fondly.

Dare I say that there's a calculated motive afoot?

Is it just me, or do you feel the tug at the heart strings just a tad too much?

Figoski's case seemed to hinge on the matter of intent versus inadvertent manslaughter.

We're still waiting to see the Vega case unfold; thus far, it's been all setup.

I would bet that Davie has performed other questionable operations. I wonder if other families will come forward.

I would love to see some of their highly touted legal acumen come to the fore in the next four weeks - I think Columbo has all of these guys and gals beat.

The show has aired, despite charges that it is only serving as an informercial for the current D.A., Charles "Joe" Hynes and serves as an improper campaign contribution.

I sat and watched the first episode. I took some notes, and attempted to see the show for what it was purported to be: a look into the daily goings-on at the Brooklyn D.A.'s office.

Let's see what I took from that first show.

There were three cases highlighted in that first episode:

The case of Asia Ross, a girl manipulated into prostitution at the age of 14 by a Robert Pernell;

The  case of Peter Figoski, a 22-year veteran of the NYPD in the 75th  Precinct who was shot in the face during an attempted robbery;

the case of Joey/Danny Vega, who allegedly absconded with and re-sold three prized pieces of art from a Long Island home

The sex trafficking case is prosecuted by Kathleen Collins, who admits that this is her first trafficking case. We get to see a bit of her home life, and we meet her husband, dutifully cooking pasta as she arrives home from work. We meet Asia Ross, talkative but clearly still traumatized from her experience - it is said that at one point, her pimp stuck a gun in her mouth. We get to see Kathleen conferring with Michael Vecchione, parsing out a proper opening statement.

This is the only storyline that concludes with this episode.

Two years into the prosecution, it turns out that Asia is still engaged in prostitution. Somehow, this escaped the scrutiny of Kathleen Collins.

At some point, I believe a great question would have been, "How are you taking care of yourself?"

I imagine that a lot of you reading this will say, "Oh, sure, Mr. Smarty Pants, hindsight is 20/20, isn't it?"; but I want you to think a little bit.

She was 14 years old when she was brought into that lifestyle.

Fourteen.

What else does she know? What did you learn about earning a living before the age of 14?

Due to Asia's continued forays into prostitution, the case against Robert Pernell cannot go forward...all except for the gun charges. For that, he is expected to serve 2-4 years.

I'm still asking myself as to why this case was chosen for the show.

The case of Peter Figoski was only touched upon during this episode. We know from the show that Officer Figoski could have retired; yet he kept on the force, working midnight shifts. He was shot in the face in the basement of 25 Pine Street during what was reported as a drug robbery. We see his daughters and his ex-wife talking about speaking to him the night of his murder. We will see more on the next episode. Ken Taub is leading this case.

The last case is a bit astounding. Laurence Oh is the prosecuting attorney on this case. Laurence apparently has a voracious appetite, and is very friendly with a deli counterperson, who also serves as his sounding board. He was informed of an art theft in Long Island, allegedly performed by a Joey/Danny Vega. According to the episode, Vega purloined the pieces in question and then sold them to an art gallery in California. One of the pieces was discovered, and the trail led back to Brooklyn.

Someone on this case is a big fan of Scarface, apparently. A sting is being set up to catch Vega in the act of stealing art, and one of the methods of capturing this theft is by putting a camera in a clock.

This case will also continue into the next episode.
Here is my problem with the case. The theft originated on Long Island. Now, I imagine that it would make sense to have unfamiliar faces set up this sting operation...but this all seems to be a terrible amount of effort to catch this guy, when there are cases right here in Brooklyn that deserve more attention.
A couple of names come to mind:

John Guica.

Derrick Hamilton.

Jeffrey Deskovic.

Fernando Bermudez.

There are five more episodes to go - you can bet that I'll have some more commentary for you, dear readers.

I saw an image that had these points, and I've transcribed a couple of them:

When you should know why bats and bees are dying by the millions...all you hear about is Lindsay Lohan.

When you should hear about ocean acidification...all you hear about are Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

When you should hear about deforestation...all you hear about is Justin Bieber.

When you should hear about the dangers of natural gas fracking...all you hear about is who is getting divorced.

When you should hear about GMOs and the dangers of toxic farming practices...all you hear about is who is gay.

When you should hear about the truth of the "War on Drugs"...all you hear about is who bought something extravagant.

When you should hear about polluted and depleted aquifiers...all you hear about are nonsense sex scandals.

I could go on and on...but I think you get the point.

We know way too much about Amanda Bynes, for example.

Same goes for Sergio Garcia.

I haven't yet seen this morning's papers, but do you think it's possible that a week can go by without mention of either of these non-entities?

I'll bet it doesn't even make it past tomorrow.

Let me just end this piece with "environmental racism". I was attending a club in Williamsburg one evening, dressed in my leisure suit. I was out in front of a favored venue, when a lovely woman came up to me and asked, "Are you a runway model"?

A runway model.

I replied, "What runway? JFK? There are many pieces that I've written about John.

I believe that we are two movements into a performance piece by the Powers-That-Be.

The first movement consisted of a clean sweep of all of the Black and Hispanic "troublemakers" elected to represent We The People in Brooklyn. This movement was led by Shirley Huntley, but orchestrated by a person still unknown to us all. This was the bagman.

The first movement went off without a hitch.

The second movement was well on its way - a "reality" show called Brooklyn D.A. was set to go on the air, at the beginning of what looks to be a heated contest between Hynes and George.

Not so fast - George may have put the kibosh on that dog-and-pony show. Why not let Abe George say it in his own words:

Abe George Explains His Lawsuit Against "Brooklyn D.A."

Thanks to Brooklyn Ron for the above link.

I don't believe I made this clear when I first posted this piece. This show is a violation of campaign finance laws, and it is especially insidious in that the show was planned to air before the election.

"Brooklyn D.A." is essentially an INFOMERCIAL for Hynes.

It purports to masquerade as a "reality show", but the reality is that it glosses over any real cases of note.

One of the topics it wouldn't go near has to be the Hasidic sex scandal. Another topic would be the malicious prosecution of John Kennedy O'Hara. Yet another would be the machinations that cost the dearly departed "Kung-Fu" Judge John Phillips all of his Brooklyn properties and, eventually, his life.

Instead, we would be presented with a sanitized version of his "wins".

Here's the issue - these shouldn't be seen as "wins". I thought it was the job of the Brooklyn D.A. to do the business of Brooklyn residents.

Don't be fooled - "Brooklyn D.A." is an attempt to game the system.

For example, here's a description of one of the "stars" of the show:

Michael Vecchione: Rackets Bureau chief in the Brooklyn district attorney’s office is best known for his pursuit of the “Mafia cops” case against crooked NYPD Detectives Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa. Hard-charging Vecchione has successfully prosecuted pols and judges alike, including Clarence Norman, former head of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. He put a camera in Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Gerald Garson’s chambers and caught the judge accepting bribes.

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/tv-movies/b-klyn-charles-hynes-reality-show-article-1.1299899#ixzz2TS1nA9ft

Somehow, I don't think the $150 million lawsuit pending againt Vecchione will get a mention on the show.

Related to all of this is a piece in the New York Post:

‘Wrong-man’ cop spurs DA overload

By JOSH SAUL and BOB FREDERICKS

Last Updated: 5:15 AM, May 14, 2013

 							Posted: 12:55 AM, May 14, 2013

Gregory P. Why is it that every time one of these groups are formed, they seem to perform the opposite of their purported function?

You're going to "see if there are any innocent people in jail”?

Might I suggest somewhere to start, since you seem to be overwhelmed?

John Guica. Not worth a second thought.

However, you should know how hard they fought to KEEP THEM IN JAIL.

Fernando Bermudez had to file nearly a DOZEN TIMES before he could get his case heard.

I don't know how many times Jabbar Collins filed before getting his evidence examined. John Guica is still waiting, despite the clearest case of juror misconduct I've ever heard. I've seen about every episode of Law & Order, as well as most of the famous movie trials, and I've seen killers, rapists and murderers set free on the merest technicalities; yet, John Guica sits alone in a cell, separated from his family.

How many others are suffering the same fate?

You know what's crushing the headlines today?

Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy.

I commend Angelina for coming forth and admitting to such a huge decision...but isn't there other news of some import?

Oh...Prince Harry went to New Jersey.

Well, right now, Abe George seems to have interrupted that second movement. Let's see what develops.

This is no Swan Lake.

It's more like a bad minstrel show.

I really shouldn't have to work another day in my life.

I mentioned back in late March that I had a fall due to a treacherous patch of sidewalk.

I never went to the hospital; nor did I sue.

Someone else, however, did sue the City of New York, after falling on an area of sidewalk not far from where I fell.

Not one week passed after that fall, when construction began - as of now, all of the bad areas of sidewalk have been repaired.

That sidewalk has troubled my neighborhood for DECADES.

It's amazing how quickly things can get done, when it comes to MONEY.

At any rate...let's get on with some recent events:

Jason Collins came out. Congratulations to you, Jason.

Why is this news?

Do you think he's the only gay player in the NBA? In the NFL? In the NHL?

Think about it...but let's not take away from Jason's very brave effort. The question is...will we now hear commentary geared towards his sexuality, rather than his conduct, on and off the court? Let's see what develops.

The Department of Education is planning to extend middle school hours by 12 hours at 20 schools. This initiative is being funded by the likes of the Robin Hood Foundation, as well as the City Council.

What needs to be done is to make school MATTER to the students. Right now, from the kinds of subject matter children are bringing home, school work has NO RELEVANCE WHATSOEVER to them. When I was attending school, we were given projects that made us want to continue the learning after we had left the confines of the school. I would read encyclopedias on the weekend, in between playing basketball, baseball, stickball and football, or riding my skateboard. Besides students from specialized schools, I don't see that kind of yearning towards learning.

Make school a part of children's lives - then school will matter.

I caught a bit of Errol Louis' Road To City Hall yesterday - I'd like to thank Howard Glaser for his efforts in concert with the aid to those families most affected by Hurricane Sandy. It's good to see a politician who knows that throwing money at the issue hardly ever helps - especially if the families can't directly take advantage. My pharmacist lost his house to the storm; I'd like to think that he is being helped to get on with his life and to start again. I wish that for all of the families affected.

I'm not going to talk too much about the supposed airplane debris from September 11th, 2001; but I will say that all of the copies of the 9/11 Commission Report should be recalled and then turned into toilet paper. That's about the best use for it. Throw in the NIST Report for good measure.

This could be a huge year for New York as far as our sports franchises: The New York Knicks are kicking ass; the Brooklyn Nets have surprised the heck out of me - this is not the same team that stunk up New Jersey; and the New York Rangers are in, baby! I smell a Stanley Cup in our future.

I hope that everyoneunderstands that I'm being sincere in regards to my recent commentary on outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Considering the cock-up of things Rudy Giuliani made of things during his tenure, Bloomberg was a breath of fresh air. I ddin't complain too much when he rid the bars of smoking - but I should have seen that as a harbinger of things to come. A lot of people are thankful for that - especially bar staff who didn't smoke and yet came home every day with clothes that smelled like ashtrays.

You should have ended your meddling with that.

Mayor Bloomberg - you contend that you're concerned with the trend of obesity in New York; yet you willfully ignore the obvious. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP in our beverages is the culprit.

HFCS - the substance the corn lobby tried in vain to get to be labeled "CORN SUGAR", and then it would just get relegated to being "SUGAR", when it ISN'T.

The science is there for everyone to see - if we replaced HFCS with cane sugar, we could knock diabetes for a loop.

If we did the same with stevia, we could rid New York City of diabetes altogether. Right now, not enough people use it; but make it the prevalent sweetener in all of our beverages, and the demand would decrease the cost of the supply.

I did take an Economics course in school, and it wasn't wasted.

How's this: stop meddling in people's business, and make a change that would be a high mark for you to go out on? You blew $100 MILLION DOLLARS to barely beat Bill Thompson by FOUR PERCENTAGE POINTS.

I could have beaten you.

Do you know how many of those ads came to my address alone? I was going to put them up as wallpaper.

Instead of giving that money to an ad agency to flood our domiciles with your accomplishments, you should have stood out on the street and given that $100 million to New Yorkers.

People would have gone nuts for you, had you done that.

I hope that you get to read this. If anyone has his private email address, please see that he reads this.

Tel the corn lobby to either make HFCS better for consumption, or take their business elsewhere - New Yorkers are dying from their cheap sweetener.

If you truly care about tackling obesity, this is what you need to do. I'll go out on the street and sing your praises for a year straight, if you do this.

Scout's honor.

That could happen here in our hometown, so let’s stop it before it starts. There is precedent. On March 18, 2013, in Seattle, Washington, Mayor Mike McGinn ordered the city police department to scrap plans it had to roll out drones, and instead to focus its resources on public safety and the community building work that is the city’s priority. In Charlottesville, Virginia a version of the resolution presented below, calling for a moratorium on drones in Charlottesville, was passed on February 4, 2013.

Let us join other cities and persuade our City Council to pass a resolution banning the use of drones in New York City. The Granny Peace has spoken with a representative in every New York City Council Member’s office about the resolution. Most often we spoke with the legislative director. Next we sent this resolution to all New York City Council Representatives and also to a staff member.

Below is an Anti-Drone Resolution written by David Swanson and modified for use in New York City by the Granny Peace Brigade. The original anti-drone resolution was presented to the Charlottesville City Council in December 2012. It is clear that drones are here to stay. Only by constant vigilance and outcry will we be able to stop the use of drones in NYC for all but humanitarian reasons. A resolution such as this would be a good first step.

Keep New York City Drone-Free

A Resolution by David Swanson
Modified for New York City by the Granny Peace Brigade

DRONES, OR UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES (UAV) are aircrafts without pilots. (Photo John Moore/Getty Images)

In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the country’s interpretation of the Constitution will “have to change” to allow for greater security to stave off future attacks.

“The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry,” Mr. Bloomberg said during a press conference in Midtown. “But we live in a complex word where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”

Mr. Bloomberg, who has come under fire for the N.Y.P.D.’s monitoring of Muslim communities and other aggressive tactics, said the rest of the country needs to learn from the attacks.

“Look, we live in a very dangerous world. We know there are people who want to take away our freedoms. New Yorkers probably know that as much if not more than anybody else after the terrible tragedy of 9/11,” he said.

“We have to understand that in the world going forward, we’re going to have more cameras and that kind of stuff. That’s good in some sense, but it’s different from what we are used to,” he said.

The mayor pointed to the gun debate and noted the courts have allowed for increasingly stringent regulations in response to ever-more powerful weapons.

“Clearly the Supreme Court has recognized that you have to have different interpretations of the Second Amendment and what it applies to and reasonable gun laws … Here we’re going to to have to live with reasonable levels of security,” he said, pointing to the use of magnetometers to catch weapons in city schools.

“It really says something bad about us that we have to do it. But our obligation first and foremost is to keep our kids safe in the schools; first and foremost, to keep you safe if you go to a sporting event; first and foremost is to keep you safe if you walk down the streets or go into our parks,” he said. “We cannot let the terrorists put us in a situation where we can’t do those things. And the ways to do that is to provide what we think is an appropriate level of protection.”

Still, Mr. Bloomberg argued the attacks shouldn’t be used as an excuse to persecute certain religions or groups.

“What we cant do is let the protection get in the way of us enjoying our freedoms,” he said. “You still want to let people practice their religion, no matter what that religion is. And I think one of the great dangers here is going and categorizing anybody from one religion as a terrorist. That’s not true … That would let the terrorists win. That’s what they want us to do.”

No, Mikey - the terrorists win when we give up liberty for security.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
US author, diplomat, inventor, physicist, politician, & printer (1706 - 1790)

Screw that noise, Mikey.

We faced numerous roadblocks, given CHP’s financial resources and powerful connections.

Although we were successful in severing most of LICH from CHP, the agreement that was reached resulted in LICH being part of Downstate Medical Center and the SUNY system. We predicted that this arrangement would not work and was doomed to failure, a prediction which recent events have confirmed.

Despite an outpouring of support for LICH at a recent Public Hearing,The latest announcement by SUNY proposing to closeLICH was confirmed by a vote of the SUNY Board recently. This has convinced us that we need to not only reactivate "Concerned Physician of LICH" and this website but also to work hand-in-hand with the rest of the LICH community - nurses, employees, community, and local elected officials - to petition New York State authorities and whomever else necessary that LICH needs to remain open.

The downtown Brooklyn community needs LICH and it needs LICH to provide its full range of services. While things are hardly perfect at LICH, the problems that exist could be readily corrected by effective, modern management once we have management that truly focuses on LICH, and making it the premier medical facility in Brooklyn that it was not that many years ago. Sadly, CHP’s and then Downstate's mismanagement has led us to the state in which we now find our community hospital.

Please join us to help save LICH and to restore it to what it was for many, many years - a premier community hospital serving the local community. Let’s join in not only saving LICH but in building its future together.

I still can't believe that the denizens of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, DUMBO and Fort Greene are okay with the possible loss of this medical center. It's very accessible, with very dedicated staff.

I implore you to make a difference:

Be the first to know

Take action

Send a check to CONCERNED PHYSICIANS OF LICH

Interestingly, McVeigh bombed Murrah Bldg on Patriots’ Day in 1995. Additionally, the deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, occurred on Patriots day. It celebrates the pre-Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. And what was Lexington and Concord about? That article will be published tomorrow. And I would add that this is just the first of these events which will occur with ever greater intensity, death and destruction! Could this work out for the denizens of Downtown Brooklyn and DUMBO?

I think it's possible.

Of course, there's a story behind this.

Yesterday, I picked up some green tea, along with some other items. It was a pretty heavy bag, and I am still not anywhere close to 100% - the "incident" remains. I muddle through, however.

I took the B67 yesterday, along with some other passengers.

At what is usually the next-to-last stop on Concord Street, the driver blurts out, "Where are you all going?" to no one in particular...or so we all thought.

The driver pulls under the Manhattan Bridge, which has served as a drop-off point...and doesn't stop.

He keeps around the bend, much to the consternation of the other passengers.

I already know where this is going.

Someone pooched the driver, so he's having his revenge on..us, the hapless passengers on this leg of his journey.

He repeats, ad nauseum, "Do you see a bus stop sign there?"

There isn't one.

I'll admit - the terrain on that bit of sidewalk under the Manhattan Bridge isn't necessarily kind. It's cobblestone, and I imagine that some folks (like myself) walk very gingerly over that bit of land. The driver does have a point - it's not an MTA-desginated drop-off point.

Let's make it so.

Let's get an area smoothed out for passengers to disembark from the bus, along with a sign designating it as an official MTA drop-off point.

I think that the elderly passengers who use the B67 would fervently agree with me.

There's a hearing on Monday, April 29th - why don't you join me there.

Update: I was able to try out the Select Bus Service yesterday - I think it's okay!

The fare for SBS is the same as on all New York City Transit local and limited-stop buses, $2.50, payable with a MetroCard or coins. Boarding procedures for the S79 SBS are the same as those on regular local and limited-stop buses. On all other SBS services, unlike other bus lines in New York City, fare collection for SBS works via a proof-of-payment system. Customers must pay their fare before boarding the bus at pay stations located in bus shelters at the designated stops (for customers using UniTicket, the UniTicket is valid for boarding). Once fare payment is made, one must board the bus at that stop within one hour. Boarding can be done via the any of the three doors (2 doors on S79 SBS vehicles). New York City Transit fare inspectors and NYPD police officers randomly check for proof of payment receipts, with those unable to produce one subject to a $100 summons.[24]

In addition, proof-of-payment receipts are only valid for the route that stops at the station at which one boards (i.e., an M34/M34A SBS receipt cannot be used on the M15 SBS). When transferring from one SBS route to another, one must obtain a second receipt from that route's fare payment machines.

I was wary of whether the machines would accept transfers from train rides on MetroCards; but not to worry - two lovely ladies helped to assure me that the machines would provide a proof-of-payment ticket upon submission of my MetroCard.

I still have it.

The trip, which would have taken maybe three times as long, while people dipped the MetroCards in and out of the bus reader, was as smooth as silk. With any one of three doors on the M34 to use, it was as easy as pie to get onboard and to get crosstown to my next destination.

As long as the MTA is opting to use recycled paper, I can see this as a win/win for New York City.
