The Spitz List: A Running List of People Running for NYC Office

George Spitz is a runner.

He ran for New York State Assembly in 1968.
He ran for New York State Senate in 1970.
He ran for New York State Assembly in 1974.
He ran for New York State Senate in 1976.
He ran for New York City Council in 1980.
He ran for New York City Council in 1995.
He ran for Manhattan Borough President in 1997.
He ran for Mayor of New York in 2001.
He ran for New York City Council in 2005.
He ran the New York City marathon 29 times.
He even ran up the stairs of the Empire State Building.

Yet, even with all that running, George Spitz, the man the myth the legend, would probably have trouble keeping up with all of the candidates in 2009. So Room Eight is playing host to The Spitz List. Named after one of New York's great runners, the Spitz List presents the first of a series of running lists of people rumored, blogged or reported to be running for office in 2009.

Starting today with the citywide offices (along with some suggested campaign slogans):

Mayor

Public Advocate

Comptroller

Those elections are, after all, in 2008.

Perhaps some people might find seeing one office after another with "incumbent running unopposed, not a real democratic election" instructive.

Good suggestions Larry.  Will think about it, but without any term limits impacting 2008, it won't have as much upheaval and as many serious candidates.
