Eliminate Borough Presidents (Sunday Daily News, again)Eliminate the borough presidents, already! Sunday's New York Daily News has a story along with this editorial: "Useless wastes: Borough presidents don't do much except spend tax money." I've said that the office needed to be changed (or eliminated) when I ran for Manhattan Borough President in 2005. I've said here before that the Republican Party should run candidates vowing to eliminate the positions. It's long, long long overdue during this Great Recession to cut wasteful government spending. The "Public Advocate" must go, too. The Republican Party should take this editorial to heart and ask the New York Daily News and New York Post to officially endorse its office-eliminating candidates. No more Adolfo Carrion Jr.-style corruption! Hold a "tea party" to announce this! And, boy, they're not at all shy about wasting the taxpayers' cash. The Daily News' ongoing look at the spending habits of these vestigial political creatures is a real eye-opener. (You'll find the first installment toward the front of today's paper.) Borough presidents spend our tax bucks but New Yorkers get little backSunday, March 15th 2009, 4:00 AM Nothing is too good for the city's borough presidents - mid-winter island travel, a tricked-out SUV, equipment to make a Hollywood movie, even helicopter rentals. In the last two years, they've plowed through more than $450 million in taxpayer money, in some cases buying items that appear to fall outside the realm of their limited duties, the Daily News found.
