NY Post's Fred U. Dicker: "We're doomed!"

The New York Post's Albany man, Fred U. Dicker, has been on the job since 1977 and has seen it all. His Sunday column is titled: "Albany, I Give Up."

I told everybody to get out of New York, that the collapse was coming.

Even Fred Dicker is embarrassed to report it!

ALBANY, I GIVE UP

STATE GOVERNMENT HAS NEVER BEEN SO CLOWNISH, SO EVIL, SO IRRELEVANT

We're going backwards, not forwards, and of late we've even been falling apart.

The Empire State -- once a beacon of progressive state government to the nation -- is on the brink of ruin. And it doesn't look like anything can be done to stop it.

In two words: We're doomed.

I've had a dozen low- to mid-level staffers -- hallway cleaners, messengers, guards, sergeants at arms, researchers, and lawyers -- buttonhole me in recent days and, in a hushed voice, make comments such as, "I'm ashamed to work here,'' "I've given my life for this?'' and "I feel like I work for morons."

Is any more proof needed that New York has gone down the drain?

I've called for a Constitutional Convention ever since Governor Spitzer resigned, if only to fill the LG's spot.

A ConCon is the only thing that will solve this mess of a state government.

Anyone for the status quo?

Are We Doomed?

Is NYS politics at rock bottom? One veteran observer thinks so. Fred Dicker, state editor for the NY Post, says “Albany, I Give Up.” Dicker rues the day he began covering the state capital some 30 years ago. Albany today is “on the brink of ruin.” “We’re doomed,” Dicker concludes. He is referring of course to the fiasco taking place in the NY Senate which he points out achieved another new low by the Democrats bringing goons onto the floor of the Senate to keep the Republicans from seizing the podium.

Is there a solution?

That’s why we need a constitutional convention. If possible, such a convention should be restricted to a set agenda, but even if that cannot be imposed, don’t fear the outcome. Special interests will collide and the political process will result in winners and losers, but if the past 233 years are any indication, the losers will not be thrown into prisons or sent off the continent in a boat without a sail and the winners will have to tone down their wildest dreams to pass muster with a skeptical electorate.

only a concon can save us.  why do we need two houses?  we don't have bigger and smaller districts here in ny.  let's go unicameral, and if you want to keep these clowns employed, make the population numbers per district smaller so they all have a job.  and if you want real democracy, give us proportional representation; term limits; popular initiatives.

There are people that really believe everything the media says. In New York, you can't be doomed even if the Mayor says so. In New York NY apartments are the most secure thing and I want to hear some one, it doesn't matter who, which has something to complain about , when it comes to living in such flats like these that I'm talking about.
