Plane Crazy: Bloomberg blames unnamed staffer.

"The buck stops with my unnamed staffer."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg just said that, or something like that. See how easy it is to deflect criticism?

As you all know by now, Barack Obama's administration decided to update some old photos by having a photo op of a fake Air Force One against the Statue of Liberty. Yeah, they coulda just used Photoshop and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. But they used actual planes flying low over New York City.

People in New York and New Jersey panicked, fearing another 9/11. Barack Obama said that he didn't personally know, but a military person on the White House staff went on the record and took the blame.

Mayor Bloomberg also claimed that he didn't personally know about the planes, but stated that he was very angry at an unnamed staffer who didn't tell him. Bad, unnamed staffer, bad! The buck stops with that unnamed staffer!

Let's see, what staffer deals with the police on a regular basis? That would be...Ed Skyler. What staffer talks to Mayor Bloomberg on a regular basis? That would be...Ed Skyler. (Not that it's Ed Skyler. We're just supposin'.)

I don't believe that Skyler would hold anything back from Mayor Bloomberg--certainly not this. I believe (again, we don't know for sure, we're just supposin') Bloomberg absolutely was informed that planes would fly over New York City.

From the New York Times:

The breakdown of communication went deeper. Mr. Bloomberg said he first learned of the exercise when his BlackBerry started buzzing with messages from people asking if he knew what was going on.

“First thing is, I’m annoyed — furious is a better word — that I wasn’t told,” Mr. Bloomberg said.

“Why the Defense Department wanted to do a photo-op right around the site of the World Trade Center catastrophe defies imagination,” he said. “Had I known about it, I would have called them right away and asked them not to. It is the federal government, and they can do in the end what they please, but I would have tried to stop it.”

He said that the Police Department and an official in his administration — he did not say who — had not advised him of the exercise.

Both the police department and an official in his administration (that darned unnamed staffer) were informed by the Obama administration AND NO ONE TOLD THE MAYOR? Maybe other people believe this, but I just don't believe it.

Someone should interview the police and every single deputy mayor.

As I've said here before, it's not the crime (and this probably isn't a crime). It's all about truthfulness and taking personal responsibility.

If a public official failed, the public has a right to know who failed.

The buck's gotta stop with somebody with a name.

Jet Flyover Frightens New Yorkers

Published: April 27, 2009

It was supposed to be a photo opportunity, a showcase of Air Force One alongside the sweep of New York City skyline.

But as the low-flying Boeing 747 speeded in the shadows of skyscrapers, trailed by two fighter jets, the sight instead awakened barely dormant fears of a terrorist attack, causing a momentary panic that sent workers pouring out of buildings on both sides of the Hudson River.
