Where's the Bloomberg fundraiser for Callaghan and Faso? Has he given them anything?
In Tuesday's New York Post are the stories "Bloomy Defends Hevesi" and "'Green' Arnie $cores Big in NY." Bloomberg does major fundraising for the GOP candidate for governor--of California?
"Bloomy Defends Hevesi" is most distressing. Here's the story:
October 17, 2006 -- Mayor Bloomberg defended State Comptroller Alan Hevesi yesterday, calling him an "honest" man, despite Hevesi's confession that he used a public employee to chauffeur his wife around for the past 3 1/2 years.
"I've known Alan Hevesi for a long time and I've always thought he was an honest, very hardworking elected official and I was just disappointed to read in the paper about this indiscretion, however you want to phrase it," Bloomberg said during a press conference near the City Hall subway station yesterday.
Hevesi is being attacked by almost every newspaper editorial board all throughout the state. Hevesi won't debate; he rarely even appears in public. It's widely acknowledged that a strong GOP donation from someone with money could knock Hevesi out.
"Bloomy Defends Hevesi"??
Yes, Bloomberg is running for president, and Chris Callaghan probably isn't going to help him much in that regard. Is that all that matters?
The position of Comptroller of New York State is vital to New York City. Have there been some past conversations and agreements between Bloomberg and Hevesi that we don't know about?
The Republican mayor of New York City gives no support to the Republican candidate for NYS comptroller? The Republican mayor of New York City defends the corrupt Democratic candidate for NYS comptroller?
No one notices these things?
Barry, I understand your general frustration, but you have picked some poor examples to illustrate your point. I agree that Bloomberg should not have defended Hevesi, but they are friends and that's what friends do. That's politics.
As much as I like Callaghan and think he'd make a great Comptroller, there is very little chance of him winning this election, even with a Bloomberg fundraiser. This is just going to be a Democratic year and we better start planning in NY for the future. You don't have to worry about that being in Tx now. :-)
As for Faso, every plan he has in bad for NYC. Why would Bloomberg support him? Out of some misguided sense of partisanship over common sense? If Faso had smarter policies that benefitted downstate instead of pandering to upstate maybe he'd be slighly competitive this year. He doesn't so he isn't. It's as simple as that.
