Going Postal: "I'm the Customer, You Stupid Bitch"There's really nowhere, with the possible exception of the INS offices, where civil servants treat you worse than the miserable Kensington Post Office. It's actually been a simmering political issue in Brooklyn for years, and Jotham Sederstrom turned up this classic video of a guy going nuts. Yes, he appears to be insane...but honestly I've been on the brink of that condition in that post office. Key exchange: Postal Worker: "Who the hell do you think you are?" Customer: "I'm the customer, you stupid bitch."

This is the worst post office I've ever seen. I avoid it except when I must pick up a certified letter which can take as long as an hour. One to two open windows are the norm. And the mis delivery problem from letter carriers in this zip code who deliver Argyle Rd. mail to the same number on Westminster Rd., or deliver Westminster Rd. mail to Argyle Rd. Yes the street name. not just the number matters.

The mamnager there told me I couldn't talk to her that way "in my post office". I started to respond by telling her it wasn't her post office, and then realized she was right after all. It was HER post office, and she gets full credit for it.
The video provided very unfond memories of my Post Office, which serves Forest Hills. Just imagine the same dreadful service and ten times the number of people on the line waiting to be abused! On several occasions, I came very close to becomming just as crazy as the guy in the video.
Man, I'm so glad the people at my post office are normal. The service might not always be with a smile, but they're at least efficient in their job and respectful to the customers. I haven't mailed a letter from Brooklyn since the late 1980s, when invitations to a party we were throwing never went out, and those at the local post office were later caught throwing mail away at end of the shift so we wouldn't have to sort it. I mail from Manhattan.
Employment is way down at the postal service, especially in NYC, due to automation, but the sorting machines don't always work, especially in a borough with two street grids (4th Street vs. E. 4th Street). I redeliver enough mail that I think I should get a postal pension. I once had a problem with an angry neighbor after I accidently opened his mail. Two year ago our Chirstmas presents from out of town didn't arrive. First time anyone I know had ever heard of that happening. With so many complaints about mis-delivered mail, the USPS instituted a rule that first class mail would be held back while the regular carrier is out, since the regular carrier can sort as he/she walks out the stairs and made sure the mail isn't in the wrong place. Once my carrier was out for an extended period due to an operation, beyond the time limit for mail waiting deliver. So my W2 was automatically returned to sender, address unknown, at a job I had left.
My wife won't go to the Post Office. She sends me. You can't even buy stamps at the 11215 post office on 9th Street. The machines have been broken FOR MONTHS and the lines are 30 minutes long, regularly. Prisons are better maintained. I pay the Mailboxes on Fifth guy extra and just get the stamps from him. 11215 was also stealing NetFlix DVD's for a while. There was a lengthy, outraged thread on Park Slope Parents about how awful this place is run. The criticism spilled over to the 7th Avenue and Atlantic Avenue post offices as well. At tax time these places are completely dysfunctional. Come the second week of April I'll be shelling out $30 to UPS. Talk about a total failure of government. This is Chuck Schumer's post office, for chrissake. Does Commmunity Board 6 care? Well, they did a fine job of collecting the complaints. Results? Nil. Post Office is federal... so complaining to city officials in meaningless. And complaining to blogs and friends also.
Call congresssman, Bush, etc.

We moved into the Ditmas/West Midwood area and I am happy to say our regular mail carrier seems extremely nice and professional and goes out of his way. I asked him whether he would prefer our mail slot at ground level or in the door, up 4 stairs and he actually said it was his job to walk up stairs if that's where the mail needed to go! Unfortunately, he doesn't work every day of the week and, apparently, his substitute is retarded. We had not moved in yet (but were having work done) and the sub decided the house was unoccupied and took the mail that was coming to us (like my mortgage bill, insurance bill, a large check, etc. which I was picking up the 3 or 4 times a week I came to the house) and forwarded it to the prior owners despite the obvious change of addressee names. It took 3 weeks for this stuff to eventually come back to us. I have no experience actually mailing stuff out. I have a lot of postal options around my office, so I'll probably do that. This is why I mail from 34th Street only. Brooklyn Post Offices stink.

On a single day I went to no less than 3 post offices in Brooklyn to buy stamps, and came up empty. Coney Island Ave and Newkirk Ave, both in Ditmas Park, and the 7th Ave./Park Slope post office all featured lines of unserved customers around the inside of each building, and spilling out of two of them. Worse, only 2 of the 3 had stamp machines, and none of the stamp machines worked in either office. While it shouldn't surprise anyone that civil service employees won't be held accountable for their job performances, the least they could do is make sure the stupid machines work. The May postal rate hike is completely unjustified and should not happen. Want to make more money? Improve your service. Hell, start providing service. Hmm, I thought it was just me. I just came from the Anchorage Downtown Post Office. After an hour waiting in line for a single parcel, I was at the end of my rope. The passport customers used to have a separate line. Now it's all one line and God help you if you have to stand in that line just for a single package. When I finally got to the window, I told the clerk how ridiculous this situation was. I rarely complain about anything, but this was just stupid. I told him I would have to speak up about this. He had the nerve to say "you can complain all you want--it's not going to help!" I guess if everyone had that attitude, we wouldn't do anything and we'd all be the worst off for it. I've had other problems there--they took my money for my post box rental. A mixup of paperwork happened and they locked me out of my box. I told them I paid and they told me "prove it". They claimed not to have records and I had to go home to recover my credit card statement. Lucky I didn't pay cash! I am removing my box from there and will drop it like a bad habit!
I waited on line outside this PO one day last summer in broiling heat and direct sun. There were almost another dozen people behind me. 9 a.m. came and went and the door stayed locked; 9:05, 9:10... I knocked on the door of the post office and was answered by an irate postal employee who screamed at me "YOU DON'T KNOCK ON THAT DOOR!" Dripping with contempt, she finally allowed us in, only to allow us to watch her and her co-workers wander around for a few more minutes fiddling with things on their desks. Finally, at about 9:15, they deigned to open ONE window. Disgraceful.
As mentioned, I no longer mail from Brooklyn, constantly have to re-deliver mail, have gotten in trouble for accidently opening a neighbor's mail, and have had mail lost and returned to sender. Just today, I found out that my wife's business credit card expired with the new one never arriving at our house. Someone else presumably got it.
On the other hand, the postal service is operating under constraints. E-mail and the internet are reducing the flow of first class mail, yet the USPS is required to maintain service to every address. In rural areas this is very expensive, especially with business falling. So they cut staff in places like Brooklyn to save money. See all those empty windows? At one time, they weren't empty. And out in the places on the right end of the cross subsidy, there is seldom a wait. As mentioned, they replaced loads of workers with an automated sorting system that has bugs. It is supposed to sort mail right into the specific mail carrier's bag in order, but that doesn't happen. The regular carrier re-sorts as he walks down the street, based on gradually learning who lives where. You get a replacement, you've got trouble. As for the increase, at least the U.S.P.S. increases its prices a little bit at a time with inflation, rather than giving in to "save the 39 cent stamp" political pressure, going in the hole, and then imposing a massive increase with interest -- like New York State entities do.
Nonetheless, postal service is getting worse here in Brooklyn. While there are some long term trends that may be to blame, I suspect postal resources, like so many resources, are collected here and sent to more politically powerful areas. I have submitted these comments to another blog featuring this video, but repeat my comments below. I hope your readers, who are quick to identify with their own miserable post office experiences, will also consider this video from another angle: the person who filmed this episode did not consider that he might have been filming a developmentally-disabled individual in a vulnerable moment. He also didn't consider that, when he posted the video to YouTube, without his subject's consent, he might be exposing the subject, and similarly disabled individuals, to mockery. Judging by some of the comments on this video made elsewhere, this has, indeed occurred. While Mr. Pang may have thought he was contributing to the public's understanding of the effects poor customer service may have in the post office, he unwittingly filmed a developmentally disabled man in an embarrasing, vulnerable moment. I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm willing to bet this gentleman has Asperger Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger%27s), a disorder that is often considered to be a type of autism. Individuals with Asperger Syndrome may function relatively normally in life and often are quite intelligent (this gentleman seems to have a fairly good vocabulary), but may have impaired social interactions, a fairly rigid response to certain stressors and may be likely to have very stereotyped, repetitive reactions to certain situations. While the film certainly shows how he reacted to a certainly stressful situation (the postal clerk was no doubt rude to him, perhaps reacting to his disability, particularly his unusual speech pattern), it has been viewed by many who have reacted to him in a mocking fashion. What I wonder is how Mr. Pang could have stood there filming this sad episode and not come to his subject's aid. A lunatic bashing a civil servant, yet another reason for poor service. But the main reason is that as a Federal service understaffing in urban areas pays for overstaffing in small town POs. Another economic transfer. And a second, since the USPS has to deliver mountains of flyers and catalouges that almost always end up in recycling they are much less efficient at the personal service type stuff. Everyone is out delivering the next Victorias secret. These jobs are very poorly paid with no hope of "advancement". And, locations like Kensington have thousands of immigrants who need the official imprimatur to keep their visas and passports active. It is a tough job. Community Board 6 has nothing to do with the post office service. Community boards advise on a number of city matters including transportation, housing, parks, etc. Post offices are the domain of the federal government. Let's get back to the original topic. The man in this video is a vitim of many abuses from many directions. I strongly disagree that the video is a mockery. It documents and provides proof of the situation throughout Brooklyn. It is my hope that this will spark us to organize and work with the Post Office to provide a long-term solution. I am starting a letter writing campaign to get Federal funding for a new postage machine and service kiosk. Even the Brooklyn Postmaster can't solve all of these problems. I MEAN HOW MUCH CAN A HUMAN BEING TAKE? THAT MAN CAME TO HER WINDOW WITH AN ATTITUDE ALREADY MIND U AND WHILE SHE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRANSACTION WITH ANOTHER CUSTOMER. YES THEY SAY CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT BUT DAM YOU CAN SEE HE WAS WRONG! THIRD OF ALL I READ A COMMENT THAT THE CLERK HAD TO BE BLACK, WELL HATE TO DISAPPOINT U SWEETIE! SHE WASNT! I can understand how he thought the house was vacant, but sending your mail to someone else who's name isn't the same. Now that took a lot of thought. so I guess he isn't retarded after all.
I have lived in 11226 and live in 11218 now (where the video was taken) and both post offices are HORRIBLE! I got so frustrated that I now pay $15/month for Endicia.com, a service that lets you do everything from home without ever having to go to the post office. Endicia is overpriced in my opinion and I really don't want to pay them $15 every month much longer, but the question is: is my mental sanity worth $15/month? Also, if you go only 2 times per month to the 11218 post office (or similar ones) then you will have spent at least 1 hour in those facilities. Is 1 hour of your life and time worth $15/month?
I answered yes to both those questions so the choice was clear.
Now I only have to go to get packages and drop off big packages that won't fit in the boxes on the street... Even that is too much post office for me, and I am trying to limit the trips by having everything mailed to my job... The other alternative is to get a mail box in a place like Mail Boxes Etc. I know somebody that does and it's like $10/month I think...
We need more private companies bringing competition to the USPS! OMG - The comment just cancelled itself out. Sorry I must find some humor in these truths. I think between the post offices (Bx for me), cablevision and the telco's - I am exhausted and have lost all faith. Then you go and suggest we tell congress and the president: this is all too absurd. It's MAIL not the war, or certain environmental destruction or breast cancer even... My post office has improved - but I think it’s an accident. Perhaps we should start breeding ponies. My boyfriend and I live in kensington and go to this post office. One day, not too long ago, after 1 1/2 hour wait on line we finally got to the window and he was told he couldn't send a package out a certain way (though he had send packages out that way hundreds of times--inluding many that week). Well, he went postal too--though in a less funny way than this guy. It involved cursing out the clerk, and eventually being calmed down by the manager (turns out my boyfriend was right the whole time and the clerk was the idiot who didn't know how to do her job). All of the people who work in this post office are fucking retarded and need to be fired. But since they're all union, that will never happen.
