Chewin' The Pork FatSo today, we got our hands on 145 pieces of good ol' fashion NY pork product (of the ... ummm ... not so kosher variety). None of these 2007 earmarks have ever been debated out in the open - nor otherwise seen the light of day. Further problem, we haven't yet a clue to whom each piece belongs (though we could probably geographically deduce many of them); nor do we know how each piece came to be - save the $3.0 million allocated to the "CCNY for the Rep. Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service to prepare individuals for careers in public service, which may include establishing an endowment, library and archives for such center". (We think we've got a pretty good idea where that one came from...???) And if you feel like digging a wee bit deeper ... we're still happy to help you out with some lunch money.
See, I actually didn't think this list looked too bad. A lot of the entries were for hospitals and schools, with few obvious bits of pork beyond the Rangel center and the 400,000 to agudath israel for 'job training.' I bet a lot of those job training awards find their way into general funds, training the friends and relatives of the principles for jobs at the organization itself.
Then I thought, why not check? Why couldn't they have job training? And sure enough, there is something called the COPE institute, run by Agudath Israel, that says it is a two-year vocational skills training academy. Total enrollment? for the 2004-2005 school year, 34. Will someone who knows something about this explain what the deal is here?
Though the list may not look bad, I think their question is more of how one organization makes the list while others do not. Yes, money for hospitals is good; but are these the hospitals that are most deserving of our public monies? Or are they just better connected?
