The Clock Is Ticking

Mayor Bloomberg has committed himself to innovation when it comes to our city's children. He has even been willing to rethink shortcomings in his own initial reforms. I applaud his desire to tackle teacher quality. I applaud him for giving principals the authority and freedom they so desperately deserve and for insisting that the money follows the child. I am still concerned, however, that the education bureaucracy is not adequately serving schools and that major deficiencies within the education system – like science education – have yet to be tackled. Our public schools are still not remotely customer service oriented. Parents have to fight as hard as ever to get their kids a good education. Mayoral control of the school system was a golden opportunity to get these things right, but time is running out.

I find it incredible that no one is calling the mayor on his lies about the high school graduation rate which has sunk to an all time low under his control and his lies about building schools and the capital budget plan, especially after a group known as Class Size Matters pointed out this week that overcrowding in city classrooms has gotten worse under this mayor and chancellor.

This mayor is not about building consensus and working with stake - holders in the community(he fires education panel members who have alternative viewpoints on school policy). The first thing he should do is get rid of the lawyer- chancellor and put in an experienced educator with a track record of success in educating children. Wasn't klein about to be thrown out of Bertlesman before bloomburg rescued him? How does this qualify him to run the largest school system in the US?

Bloomberg has shown that he isn't capable of running the school system and the Dept. of Ed is currently in the worst shape it's ever been in, ask any current or recently retired administrator.

The mayor is good at 2 things manipulating the local media and lying.

I agree with Tom and (to my surprise disagree with Ms. Moskowitz). The record of the Mayor and his Department of Education for truthfulness with regard to such issues as graduation rates and class size is not only deplorable, it sabotages any realistic planning to address shortcomings in the NYC schools. Perhaps as bad, the Mayor hops from erratic project to project; centralizing the schools, putting the teachers into a lock-step curriculum; making war on the principals union; locking parents and the public out of the process. His currently announced plan to revamp funding for schools threatens true chaos. When he finishes his term, the problems with the schools it appears will remain. Eduction policy run by press release has been less than effective.

How is it that for a very long time the major players in public educatin in NYC where the student population is 90% minority, the major players have names like bloomberg, moskowitz, klein and weingarten? What the hell is that all about?

No wonder students needs aren't being met.

did you hit "publish" too soon? there's no substance here.

Is this the same Eva Moskowitz who was chair of the Education Committe, did absolutely nothing to help schools in her 8 years in office, and is now making her living off of a Charter school of some kind which is funded by the DOE?

Submitted by Daniel Millstone on Thu, 01/18/2007 - 10:37pm.
is different from anon 9:13. She picked fights with people she didn't need to, made enemies for reasons I at least never understood. However she used her chair to shine light into the Dept. of Ed. She listened to parents and teachers in a way that Mayor Bloomberg still refuses to do. Although I admire Robert Jackson's work every day, I often miss ms. moskowitz's strident advocacy. Before moskowitz , who were the education committee chairs? I don't remember.

No substance if you're a member of the "chosen" people who need to make room in city govt. for the folks who actually live in work in the neighborhoods that NYC children attend public school in.

Btw Eva, up in Harlem we remember your anti Muslim slur.

Thank God this woman is gone from public life!!! Eva was a nightmare to work with. The worst of the worst. Who cares what she has to say?

So much playa hatin' on this thread...

I'm not saying that Eva was perfect...

But, what are you schmos crying about? That Eva opened up a can of whoop-ass on Randi? Who the hell cares? Randi deserved it. No one is hindering the education of your children more.

Get over it, and realize what little oversight is being done now-a-days by the wholly-owned UFT subsidiary that is your New York City Council.

And then, when you wake up and smell the bullshit, remember what little was done by the Ed Commmittee before Eva arrived on the scene. Priscilla Wooten - need I say any fucking more?

Eva has been bought off by bloomberg and she has made anti Muslim slurs. She is a district 2 whiner and has no effect or bearing on the majority of poor school children in NYC, she needs to go away and go and live in her anti Muslim world, she is irrelevant in the non white school system, just like weingarten, bloomberg and klein. Our children are being robbed by these people who claim to understand our struggles while making six figure salaries, we're sick of it!

but -- I am concerned that three comments above: "sick of" 12:45 AM am and "pissed" and "Anonymous" 1:31 PM are making anti-semitic slurs. Is it standard practice to encourage this sort of thing? I certainly encourage the author or authors to stand up and take responsibility for what's said here.

I didn't always agree with her and she wasn't always right, but at least she tried to do something other than preserve her place or advance her go-along-get-along career while she was there. I hope she keeps writing, and keeps making noise.

I mostly focus on the state, where everything passes 212 to 0. We can't have all Eva Moskowitzes, but when we have none, we get what we have been getting.
