Avoiding Even the Appearance of Hypocrisy

One would think that in this day and age, political party organizations would go out of their way to avoid the appearance of impropriety, if not actual impropriety itself.

One would be proven wrong. At least in Brooklyn.

I’ve just gotten my hands on a questionnaire sent out by the Party to prospective candidates for Brooklyn Borough President. The questionnaire includes a section on “Land Use”. The section notes that “Borough Presidents appoint representatives to local community boards and the City Planning commission, which vote on land use and zoning actions under the NYC Uniform Land Use Review Procedure.”

It then asks if the candidate will “pledge to”:

“A. Consider the advice” of the party “regarding your appointments”.

“B. Commit to consulting with” the party “on development before deals with the developer are struck”.

Has The Party no shame? Even if not illegal, is this not blatant overreach which smacks of potential corruption and undue influence?

Where are Mole333, Michael Bouldin, NKD, and Oneshirt when one needs them?

By the way, in this instance, by “The Party” I am referring to the guilty party, which is the county party organization responsible for this outrageous behavior.

The Kings County Working Families Party.

Can you imagine the uproar if Vito Lopez had done this?

consider? consult?

yeah that really sounds dirty and aweful. politicians shouldn't consider and consult anyone, ever.

...seems like standard candidate questionaire material there you've "got your hands on"

It is not standard questionnaire bilerplate to ask politicians to Commit to consulting with” party leaders “on development before deals with the developer are struck”.

The only difference between WFP and Ray Harding is that Harding had enough sense of propriety not to put the damned thing in writing.

Commit to consult with Bertha Lewis?

Why? So she can't get another community benefits agreement where all the benefits go into her pocket?

WFP and ACORN have taken their extortion operation to a whole nuther level

Land Use - just finished reading a report regarding oiur C.U.N.Y. Colleges and use of land in Queens for proposed dormms that environmentally need over 3 million to clean up and people balk.

Just finished photographing a report of trees that seem to just die on their own in major numbers where a college is proposing dorms on S.I.

And one thing I have learned "You can't make change when the guilty remain" pass that along to Nancy Pelosi - when it comes to many government offices and non profits - Wall Street is all streets that needs to end their party.

Well, let's see...grand jury duty for 2 weeks (and I still have to go in every Thursday for the next four Thrursdays to do paperwork), and now trying to catch up on work with my boss while she frantically tries to put together a talk on my work for a metting this week, and my son't birthday is coming up, plus the national elections. Oh and dealing with insurance companies, my co-op board and a lawyer regarding leaks in my building. But in between I can pay attention to local politics.

As to the WFP, I have never been a big fan. I did donate once and I have found some of their candidates good, but overall find them too adicted to money to be true reformers. Bouldin might see them in a better light these days, but I am perpetually skeptical about them...though not hostile. This particular item seems relatively minor compared to their monitary requirements for candidates to be worthy of their attention.

And, of course, some WFP folks have accused me of being a County hack who collaborated in the IND disenfranchisement of new members, showing just how informed they are. But I don't hold it against them.
