Funhouse Mirror
LIZ BENJAMIN (from “O'Donnell Considering Congressional Run”): I asked [Assemblyman Daniel] O'Donnell if he thought the fact that the composition of the district and the fact that the seat has been considered a "black seat" would pose a problem for him. He noted that the composition of his AD "almost mirrors" that of Rangel's district, and he performed well across all voting blocs in 2002. ASSEMBLY DISTRCT 69 NON-HISPANIC WHITE: 46.55% NON-HISPANIC BLACK: 18.71% HISPANIC: 24.71% CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 15 NON-HISPANIC WHITE: 16.38% NON-HISPANIC BLACK: 30.50% HISPANIC: 47.85% Well, you gotta hand it it to Danny. He proven's conclusively that at least one member of his family is capable of saying something worthy of a laugh. First of all, the demographics of O'Donnell's district have shifited even more than Rangel's. It is now almost cetainly majority non-hispanic-white. Rangel's district is likely little more than 25% (and probably less than that) non-Hispanic white--what it has gotten is more Latino. It is still overwhelmingly non-white. As such, to say that O'Donnell's district mirrors Rangel's one must either be ignorant or a liar. That is not to say O'Donnell should be disqualified. He may well turn out to be the best candidate. However, one must go into such a race understanding what one is getting into. It is one thing to acknowledge the reality and say you are capable of transcending it. It is another thing to deny what that reality is.

Compared with other West Side legislative districts, O'Donnell's is incredibly diverse.
