I have a theory that McCain might be engaging in some gamesmanship.  The point of doing a vp announcement today was to take the headlines away from Obama.  McCain could only do this with a big surprise pick.  If he announced Romney it would have been announced with a big yawn by the press.

So instead he announces Sarah Palin.  Headlines everyywhere.  Nobody's talking about Barack's speech now.  But what if that was the point?  What if next Tuesday or Wednesday, after Palin gets beat up by the press a bit (which they will, the press *hates* candidates being put up for national office which they haven't brutally vetted first), she comes out to the podium and tearfully "announces" that she is declining the nomination for vp to spend more time with her five month old baby.  McCain accepts her resignation the ticket, says he was proud to have picked a woman, and then picks Romney as her replacement.

McCain thus gets the headlines he wants for a few days, gets credit for picking a woman, AND ends up with Romney anyway.  It could all be a plan, a deception.   Sarah Palin then gets to go back to Alaska with a substantially raised national profile, and Romney gets many more people at the convention accepting him as vp because they are so glad it didn't end up being her.  It works all the way around.

Adding to that theory is that CNN is now reporting that John McCain had only ever met, had only ever talked with, Palin once in his life. She does live in Alaska you know, a place McCain probably has rarely ever visted. How do you choose someone inexperience, who you barely know, to be a haertbeat away from the oval office? It doesn't add up. How does he know Palin is the best choice when he barely knows her? Did he read Palin's wikipedia entry and think it was cool or something?

One has got to wonder who is behind Palin. She is inept, inexperienced, riddled by several incidents of plain bad judgment; McCain didn't even know her until a few weeks ago. Somebody owed a big favor has pushed her, knowing that there is every liklihood that she will become president if McCain is elected, or that by being exposed nationally like this she will be able to make money for them through the lobbyists who must be salivating tonight. Can anyone say Spiro Agnew?

Ms. Chao is not eligible to be Vice President of the United States as she was born in Taiwan.  The constitition is specific on this.  Also a reason ambassodors are not chosen for VP slot often--residency requirement.

To all of you card carrying Democrats, what experience did Bill Clinton have when he ran for President?  I do not remember you complaining about his lack of national or foreign relations experience back then.  Palin is running for VP, not President.  There have been plenty of Governors who have gone from the State House to the White House.

Let's see, Clinton had been a Governor, on and off for 14 years, and head of the Democratic Leadership Council, a group which, among other things, run a think-tank concerned with both foriegn and domesstic policy.

And you're right, she's running for Veep. Veep for a 72 year old man with visible memory lapses.

This selection is not a political problem; it's a national security problem.

I don't know anything about the University of Idaho, but I'm guessing a Bachelor's degree can't compare with the following from Wikipedia's bio of Bill Clinton:

With the aid of scholarships, Clinton attended the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., receiving a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (B.S.F.S.) degree in 1968. He spent the summer of 1967, the summer before his senior year, working as an intern for Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright. While in college he became a brother of Alpha Phi Omega and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Clinton was also a member of Youth Order of DeMolay, but he never actually became a Freemason. He is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi's National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc.

Upon graduation he won a Rhodes Scholarship to University College, Oxford where he studied Government... After Oxford, Clinton attended Yale Law School and obtained a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1973

Nice try. You may agree with her opinions, but don't waste your time trying to compare her knowledge or scholarship to one of the most intelligent politicians in recent American history.  Pleeeze.

Even Michael Bouldin would stand up for me in admitting that Mrs. Gatemouth stacks up pretty well compared to Ms. Palin, thank you.

And knows more about foriegn policy.

And, while no one before quite compares w/the present and hopefully final love of my life, I've had at least one other who would have pushed Governor Palin out of the runner up position at her beauty contest (even if she could not have attained Ms. congeniality).

Give me a break! I'm not a fan of Bill Clinton, but he was Governor of Arkansas for 12 years before running for President. He is also a remarkably gifted speaker and politician. Sarah Palin was a mayor of a tiny town in Alaska for 11 years, and she's been Governor for only a year and a half. There is just no comparison between Palin and Clinton. Even Dan Quayle was better qualified. (2 terms in the U.S. Congress, and youngest member, at age 33, in the Senate).

did we read somewhere that Palin just acquired a US Passport for the first time in her life, back in just 2007? Serious? She has never been out of the country prior to 2007, has spent her life in Alaska, and we think she has a worldly view and could be president on Day One? Wordly experoience and knowledge and perspective?  Imagine her getting the opportunity to sit down with Putin to negotiate something.  Please....

I also have a theory:

The conflict between the Clinton camp and the Obama camp is not a serious as we were led to believe.  The Obama campaign may also be engaging in some gamemanship.  There were sure some surprises at the convention and I bet they still have a lot up their sleeves.  What if they have some endorsements that will come out of left field right after the republican convention.

I love surprises

Sometimes the truth hurts... but mccain is desperate... pandering? he has just insulted all american women... him picking a female vp is pure drama and he is trying to key in on the hillary clintons voters... but that won't be enough to get him into the the white house. mccain is old and out of touch... heck, even my dog knows how to use a computer and cell phone.... mccain thinks he will win just because he picked a female vp... what a hypocrite.. he accuses obama of being a novice and trying to win an election by pandering to the irag war and a celebrity... but now he picks a female beauty pageant winner "palin's" as vp just to try to win an election (a female major novice and under investigation for firing her family members mate)? I am a republican, but I am voting democratic... i sent money to mmcain and he wasted my hard earned money running nonsense commercials...i am tired of this crap.. i am voting obama. at least he keeps it real.
Obama needs to come out hammering these issues I have pointed out in this message.
You may find a better word for "HYPOCRITE", but I would use the exact word to explain to the american people exactly who mccain is....
I could think of allot of good commercials to run to make my point..;.
Obama needs to drive this home and show the american people just who john mccain really is and stop playing mr nice guy... nice guys finish last...

If she has to drop out, McCain will have lost the election.

The only problem with that is that it makes McCain look like a doofus for picking her in the first place if she can't take the heat.  It would show HORRIBLE judgment on his part.

You were right about McCain stepping all over Obama's speech, though.  But McCain's ploy is only going to carry him so far.  At the end of the day, Palin makes James Danforth Quayle look like a respected statesman.  She is the worse nominee since Vice Admiral James Stockdale, who famously muttered, "Where am I?  Who am I?"

And tears aren't going to cut it this time.  Hillary shed the quota of tears even women will accept from a female candidate.

The blogger had the RIGHT idea and the BEST one I've seen - as I was looking desperately for a list of nominees who are better qualified than Miss Alaska runner up.

Palin's nomination seems to much like a game. One possibility: Stevens resigns his Senate seat within the next two weeks, the Republican leadership beg Palin to take his Senate seat, she tearfully withdraws her nomination. The GOP is able to save face with their Christian base (see, we had a candidate...) and then McCain picks Romney.

Either that, or the GOP desperately wants to lose this election so that the Democratic party can take the blame for the economic sh*t that has yet to hit the fan.

Even if you disagree with his politics, you are not seriously comparing Clinton's experience (when he ran) to Palin's?  That's a little childish.  And suddenly it's also OK because she's just running for the VP slot?  It's amazing to me how intellectually bankrupt some Republicans are: they'll literally excuse any mistake of their leaders.  I've talked to plently of moderate Republicans and they are dumbfounded at this choice.  John McCain just proved that he will put his own personal ambitions over over country's interests.

It would still reflect badly on McSame.  Again, it goes back to the Vetting process and Personnel Judgment.  Many, including Repug talking heads would question this, saying "he didn't see this coming?"  Already, you've had comparison's to Bush's Harriet Myers selection, as well as "Brownie you're doin a heck of a job".   If Palin has to go for any reason, McLame would be just that, essentially a Dead Duck. I seem to recall George McGovern going into Freefall after his 1st VP pick, Sam Eagleton had to go.  Back then, the questions were why no one had seen this mental health issue in the vetting process.  I think Eagleton went through electrical shock therapy for a drinking problem.

Finally, this is a Talibegenical witch and to paraphrase her NRA Mentor:  "You'll have to pry my cold dead fingers...".  She will not go quietly into that good night.

To compare Bill Clinton's resume when he took office with Sarah Palin as evidence that Sarah might be qualified.... wow. Hello. This argument is beyond ludicrous. On every single level there is no comparison, education, expereince. Sarah has the love of wacko people who speak in tongues. But there is a bunch of them and they vote like school of fish. This is the ONLY reason MCCain picked her. It shows a lot about McCAin. I was fooled by him for a while.  But he is no patriot as marked by this utterly irresponsible pick. He will be 76 before his first term is up and he has had serious health problems already. Cancer four times?

Sorry, bzzt. I'm not voting for no lightweight.

Also, while she was mayor of Wasilla, she racked up a $20 million debt, or roughly $2,400 for every man, woman and child of that town.  Not a good thing to leave behind for a place where 2/3rds the population is already broke.
