The Gatemouth Project

I’ll be going on modified High-Holy-hiatus until 9/25, although I reserve the right to come back and comment on anything that interests me and won’t keep until then. When I come back, it is my intent to provide extremely nasty, unrelentingly partisan pro-Democratic commentary until the election.

Nuance and thoughtfulness will not go out the window, because, when deployed properly, they are extremely effective techniques. But the goals should be clear:

  1. Increasing the number of Democrats in the NY State Senate
  2. Winning Democratic Majorities in both houses of Congress
  3. Helping Party building in areas it needs to grow, killing future Republican stars in their cradle.
  4. When possible, giving a high five to the type of candidates likely to win kudos from the Progressive Policy Institute (but a Michael Moore Democrat who can beat a Republican suits me just fine).
  5. Swallowing hard and helping Andrew Cuomo beat the egregious Jeannine Pirro.

You will notice the absence of Assembly races from the mix. While I am certainly open to mentioning Assembly races which might help to serve goals (4) and (5) [so drop me a line, Ms. Hyer Spencer], for the most part electing a few extra Democrats to the Assembly is superfluous and our resources are better directed elsewhere. On the other hand, while I am a City guy, I am open to commenting about races around the State, and indeed, around the Country (I am also open to discussing Israeli politics).

In facilitating the goals outlined above, I am asking for your help. That means you, “The Insider Political Community”. I do about 15 columns a month. I need stories. Please feed me facts, figures, malicious gossip, rumor and innuendo; anything for la causa. I will take your raw material, run it though the Gatemouth processor and turn it into patented pieces of political wisdom worth preserving for posterity. I will link your website, encourage contributions, solicit volunteers. DSC, this means you! I don’t only want your close races, I want to boost your sure losers. Feed me, I am hungry!

As I do have a certain style and track record, I am especially interested in stories that fit into my recurring themes, like blowing up the Albany Bi-Partisan Iron Triangle. But, while stories which fit the Gatemouth world view are to be especially prized, I will write to order, depending upon the need, so feel free to solicit my help, even if your bask regularly in the Triangle’s luminous glow.

I can be contacted at: Gatemouthnyc@hotmail.com.

Perhaps personal attacks and symbolic issues are what matters on Election Day.

But if you want some reasons to vote against Republicans that have to do with now the have affected people's lives, you could do worse than to read http://www.ipny.org/littlefield/policies.html "Unforgivable Policies of the State of New York."  Only skip the parts about Medicaid and Pensions.  While in Albany both parties are joinly responsible for every outrage, the Democrats have a higher share of blame for those inequities.

The key question Democrats should be asking is this:  in the mid-1990s, the Republicans blamed all our problems on the needs of minorities, immigrants, and those living in older cities like New York.  That's what everyone else wanted to hear, and after the Republicans were voted in, they slashed benefits and services for those very people.  Now the federal and state governments are going broke anyway on their watch.  Where, to whom, is the money going?

And, business, which the Republicans back, claimed that American workers had to work harder, work longer, accept the loss of pensions (replaced by 401Ks they no longer contribute to) and health insurance to keep their jobs in competition with countries overseas.  Americans have done so.  But they are still losing jobs.  Who is it that is overpaid?

My own view?  Based on what they have done, at the local level, don't vote for Democrats.  At the federal level, don't vote for Republicans.  And at the state level, don't vote for Democrats OR Republicans.

which Democrats to support in NY (both state and city)?

I'm for anti-machine reformers, too, Larry. Which is why last week bummed me out.

Also, and less importantly, is it mere coincidence that both Adam Green and Gatemouth are on vacation simultaneously? I'm just sayin'...
