Isn't this the same Frank Seddio who resigned from the Assembly, then resigned as Brooklyn surrogate? Now he wants a 3rd shot at stardom? Even Governor Palin wouldn't have the chutzpah. Giffords was a selfless act by someone who deserves our praise, sympathy and well wishes, along with a speed recovery. But, pardon my history, it reminded me of the West Wing episode when President Bartlett temporarily stepped down when his daughter was kidnapped. The Democratic operatives were concerned about whether it made Bartlett look weak in the face of terrorism, while the Republican operative noted, correctly, how strong it made Bartlett look when he put country over his needs. Same with Giffords--she deserves continued full pay, health benefits and pension, just like legislators in NY who die in office (and regrettably few do given the otherwise low turnover). Enough of fiction. Romney reminds me of Mondale in 1984 with his machine, long term planning, aura of invincibility and inevitability with mainstream support but vulnerability to attack from within his own party because he really wasn't such a great candidate. It'll be interesting to see what catchphrase comes out the campaign.

If winning in his own state was considered a moral victory, how competitive could Vice President Mondale have been? Walter Mondale was an Alf Landon or a Wendell Willkie with less success in business and a much better government resume. Once Ronald Reagan's team delivered the message it's "Morning in America," Walter Mondale could just as well have phoned in his effort to win back the White House for the Dems. Relative to his position with the GOP mainstream, Mitt Romney is closer to Landon and Willkie Republicanism than any Republican who's run for president since either of them, including his dad, Bill Scranton and Nelson Rockefeller. I cried when I saw the video, when I saw her at the SOTU and again today when she turned in her resignation letter. God bless Rep Giffords and I hope she recovers enough to return to Congress.
