CM LIU LAUNCHS GRAFFITI REMOVAL CAMPAIGN IN FLUSHING
First Target: 100 Mailboxes
**********************************************
FLUSHING, NY – Council Member John Liu today launched a summer
campaign to remove graffiti in Flushing. Working with the local
postmaster, CM Liu's Youth Action Team began the campaign this week by
re-painting mailboxes. About 100 mailboxes in the Flushing area have
been surveyed and identified for makeovers.
CM Liu stated: "Graffiti is a scourge that requires constant
attention. These paint makeovers not only help get rid of this
scourge, but also encourage the active participation of our young
people who are ready and willing to lend a hand to improve our
community."
Julie Wong, a manager at the U.S. Post Office in Flushing, stated:
"This campaign is a terrific boost for the community. We're very
happy to work with CM Liu's Office to get rid of graffiti on our
mailboxes."
Application forms will also be handed out to property owners,
businesses, and residents who would like assistance in removing
graffiti. CM Liu's Youth Action Team will consider, on a case-by-case
basis, special requests to help remove graffiti from property owners
who provide authorization and supplies.
Alvin Yee, a member of CM Liu's Youth Action Team, stated: "I'm a
student at the Bronx High School of Science. When I first enrolled as
a member of the John Liu Youth Action Team, I was looking forward for
an opportunity to give back to the community, and what better way to
do so than painting mailboxes. It is a rewarding experience,
especially when strangers come up and say 'good job.' Although it is
about 100 degrees outside, we will not stop because helping the
community is an unparalleled experience."
Anita Suen, a member of CM Liu's Youth Action Team, stated: "I'm a
Stuyvesant High School student. Today, I spent my morning with other
caring volunteers cleaning up mailboxes all over Flushing. While
painting mailboxes may not seem like a very significant task, we are
improving the quality of life for Flushing residents. While we were
painting mailboxes, many gracious pedestrians have recognized our hard
effort and have expressed words of gratitude. They help us realize
that our efforts have not been in vain. Cleaning Flushing is not only
our responsibility, but everyone's responsibility. I implore everyone
to do their fair share in helping keep Flushing clean."
Stephen Ma, a member of CM Liu's Youth Action Team, stated: "I am a
senior at Bronx Science and a proud member of this year's Youth Action
Team. This summer, we are painting mailboxes after careful planning
and mapping. Each day, we spend four hours a day painting mailboxes.
By the end of the summer, we hope to have painted at least 100
mailboxes."
