Strategy Addresses Recent Tragedies and Quality of Life Issues in Overburdened Neighborhoods

City Hall * In response to recent tragedies in and around New York City nightclubs and bars, and to ongoing problems created in residential neighborhoods by clubs and club patrons, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn today announced a 3-point plan to address safety and security concerns throughout the City. The plan calls for local enforcement of State Liquor Authority regulations; a packet of legislative proposals that will strengthen club security; and a Nightlife Safety Summit in September to bring key players together to collaboratively address improving nightclub safety.

**Energy Outages on the East Side – Please Conserve**

A majority of feeders which provide electricity from 14th Street up to 40th Street and from 5th Avenue to the East River, have gone out. These include two serving the Madison Square Garden network and three serving the Kips Bay network. Affected areas are in danger of losing power altogether.

Crews are working right now to prevent this from happening.

The City is asking that all non-essential electrical appliances be turned off in order to conserve energy until Con Ed has resolved the problem.

First Target: 100 Mailboxes

FLUSHING, NY – Council Member John Liu today launched a summer
campaign to remove graffiti in Flushing. Working with the local
postmaster, CM Liu's Youth Action Team began the campaign this week by
re-painting mailboxes. About 100 mailboxes in the Flushing area have
been surveyed and identified for makeovers.
