FDR You Serious?In their enthusiasm to be rid of Eliot Spitzer, many news outlets have overstated the firsts in David Paterson’s, and his father Basil’s, biographies. As has already been widely note, Paterson is not the nation’s first legally blind Governor, that distinction belongs to Bob Reilly of Arkansas. And Basil Paterson was not the first black man to be nominated for statewide office by a major party. That would be Edward Dudley who was the Democrat-Liberal candidate for Attorney General in 1962, years before Basil Paterson even entered the State Senate. And surely Basil was not, as Herb Boyd stated last night on NY One, the first African-American to serve in the NY State Senate, although Basil did succeed the first African-American woman, Constance Baker Motley, who’d left to replace Dudley and become the third African American to serve as Manhattan Borough President (the first was Hulan Jack, elected in 1949), as well as the first woman of any color to serve on the old Board of Estimate. But the prize for lazy stupid lameness in the age of google goes to Stewart Ain of "Jewish Week"; behold: “[David Paterson] becomes the state’s first black Governor and the first with a handicap”. Yes, David Paterson may not be the first legally blind governor, or the first "handicapped" governor of New York, and his father might not have been the first African-American to run for State-wide or legislative office in New York. So what? Why must we go out of our way in an attempt to diminish his accomplishment? Accomplishment? Apropos of this thread's title, let's just say that Lt. Governor Paterson's ferryboat was named "Eliot Spitzer". One must concede, however, that being used as a cat's paw by Eric Schniederman, Liz Krueger and Tom Duane counts as an "accomplishment", especially when he's there and they're all still here. Given his status as the scion of African-American political royalty in New York, however, what surprises me is that Lt. Governor Paterson hasn't risen farther and faster than he did. On the other hand, he certainly reflects well on his father, unlike the Hon. Adam Clayton Powell IV. At least he'll make a good caretaker while Attorney General Cuomo sharpens up his elbows. ...he'd be running a newstand in a Courthouse. But it would be a very successful newsstand.
governor drops his support of the Reproductive Health and privacy Protection Act which was Eliot Spitzer's wet kiss to the abortion industry and is sponsored by Andrea Stewart Cousins of Westchester County. I hope that Stewart Cousins is voted out although the thought of the return of Little Nicky Spano does not please me. This radical bill would allow abortions through all nine months of pregnancy; make abortion a civil rights; and force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions or close. As a man who has overcome a handicap, Gov. Paterson should withdraw his support for this dangerous bill.
