Really? This is how Albany decides to save money? Really?

I mean really, Albany? Really?

The budget process in Albany has obviously become a complete joke. And like all good hack politicians the jokers in Albany are trying to score cheap political points.

Case in point Gov Patterson just ordered cuts, cutbacks and closing at 55 State Parks.

As a result  I just got word from a softball league I play in that our games at Riverbank State Park have been cancelled.

I mean really? How much does it cost the State on New York to let people play softball on a field?

This is how the geniuses in Albany decided to save money! Padlock a softball field? How does this save the state of New York even a dime? I mean come on!

Is it time to Draft Rudy for Governor?

On Thursday at a breakfast meeting hosted by Crain's New York Business Rudy Giuliani stated that for him to run for Governor of NY things would have to be "bad". Well if our state's current economic and political situation doesn't count as "bad" then I don't know what "bad" is!

Here is an article talking about it and urging Rudy to throw his hat into the ring: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2009586/draft_rudy_giuliani_for_governor.html

Blame Senate Republicans for NYC's Sales Tax Hike!

Last night (after the gridlock was broken) the NYS Senate voted to raise the NYC Sales tax by .5%, an almost 6% increase to the new rate of 8.875%.

The vote was 43 to 19 with many Republicans crossing the aisle to vote with the Democrats to raise the sales tax.

Sen. Ruben Diaz apparently got up on the Senate floor and beg the Republicans for almost an hour to join with him to defeat the tax hike.  Democrats Sen.. Hiram Monerrate and Kevin Parker also voted against the tax hike.

So this was a bill the Republicans easily could have killed.

In my opinion this was a HUGE missed opportunity for them. After a month of chaos the 1st thing Republicans in the Senate do when the leadership is settled is join with the Democrats to raise taxes.

An upside to Senate gridlock for NYC taxpayers!

Today, July 1 a $500 million NYC sales tax hike was scheduled to go into effect. However due to the gridlock in the NY State Senate they couldn't pass the tax hike. So if you buy anything in New York City today it will be a half a percent cheaper than it would have been if not for the Senate coup!

So at least while those idiots in Albany argue us shoppers in New York City can save a few bucks. Every month they argue saves New York City consumers $60 million in taxes.

Curtis Sliwa for Public Advocate?

The NY Post has an Editorial supporting  Curtis Sliwa who has been talking about running for Public Advocate as an Independent on a platform of  eliminating the do nothing office which will cost $1.8 million this year (which is down from the $2.9 million the office has cost last year).

I like this quote from Sliwa "If elected I would close and padlock the office, fire all the employees and, most importantly, fire myself."

It's about time someone made the case for getting rid of this useless post that's costing NYC taxpayers millions of dollars every year!

I hate to say it but this might be the one job that Sliwa is actually qualified for! As long as he really intends to follow through on his promise to eliminate the office he's got my vote!

Draft Rudy for Gov!

Looks like the folks over at Urban Elephants have started the Draft Rudy Giuliani for Governor campaign.

Congressman Jose Serrano doesn't get it!

Congressman Jose Serrano was the only New York area congressman to vote against the rescue plan.

http://www.nypost.com/seven/09302008/news/regionalnews/no_way_bx__jos__is_sorry_131389.htm

The question I have is he really that stupid or is he just a demagogue?

Does Rep. Serrano have any idea what the market's havoc has done to the NYS and NYC budgets? Does he understand the extent on New York's tax revenues that come from Wall Streets bonuses? Does he think Lehman's bankruptcy and AIG's problems have been good for New York? Does he want to see more financial institutions based in New York fail?

Congressional Republicans commit political hara-kari

I think the reckless actions today of the House Republicans who voted against the Rescue Plan pretty much guaranteed an Obama victory and a Democratic landslide in November.

While the immediate result of the failure to pass the Rescue Plan was a 777 point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a drop of over 7% in the S&P 500, I think the longer term upheaval this will cause in the US economy and the markets in general could be quite significant.

Understanding the Mortgage Mess

I have been talking to a lot of people about the current mortgage mess and I have been surprised by how many people really don't understand what is going on and how big a role the US Government and two Government Sponsored Enterprises (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) played in causing this financial melt down.

To help I have collected a few articles and some videos that can help people understand the causes behind the current crises.

Sen Parker Gets Punchy Again....

Looks like Sen Kevin Parker is in trouble with the law again. This time assualt charges have been filed by Lucretia John who is an aide to Senator Parker.

Apparently Sen Parker is alleged to have pushed the 32 year old woman in the midst of an argument in the senator’s campaign headquarters on Saturday.

In the police report, Ms. John, a special assistant to the senator, said that he had also knocked her $300 eyeglasses to the floor and stepped on them.

Dumbest Campaign Ad Ever!

The new Sen Obama ad portraying Sen McCain as a man of the past and critizing him for not using e-mail has to be the dumbest political ad ever made.

Do the Obama people who made this ad realize the reason John McCain doesn't send e-mails or use a computer is because he has trouble typing on a keyboard due to the injuries he suffered while he was beaten and tortured as a POW in Vietnam?

How stupid are they to claim that John McCain is not qualified to be President because of a disability he suffered while in service of his country!

Are the Democrats trying to lose this election on purpose? Really this has to be the dumbest campaign ad ever!

Something to be Thankful for

When reading the New York Times today I was amazed by this article.

Which states that in 2007 NYC will have fewer than 500 murders(down from a height of 2,245 during the Dinkins years). What is even more remarkable is that in a city of 8.5 million people only 35 murders were committed by strangers.

What is not surprising is that The New York Times article fails to mention the man most responsible for this turn around, Rudolph Giuliani.

As a life long New Yorker who remembers what life in the City was like before Rudy this article made me really reflect on how much New York has changed. Rudy not only reduced crime in New York, he also change the culture of New York from one of fear to one of safety and civility.
