2009 Council Candidates?

In 2009, unless something changes, term limits will kick in and 38 NY City Council members will not be eligible to see re-election.

Eight years ago when the situation was similar I had already heard enough gossip and rumors and read press reports that I had compiled a list of many potential candidates for the open Council seats.

That has not happened yet this time. Only 6 candidates have declare their interest in running for an open City Council seat on the NYC Campaign Finance Board website and while I’ve hear a few rumors and there has been some press reports about likely 2009 Council candidates (Assemblyman Denny Farrell, Lower Manhattan community activist Madelyn Wills & Julie Menin), I have not heard nearly as many names as 1999.

I find this surprising because I would think that with the number of blogs concerning local politics, more information like this would be public.

So, I’m asking the readers of Room 8 to fill the gap. Respond to this post in the comments section and tell me what you’ve heard – who is definitely running and who is seriously thinking about it?

In the Bronx, District 14, I hear that the strongest and most formidable candidate is likely to Haile Rivera.

Through my Google research, I found that he works for the Food Bank, founded his own organization (Hands on NY) and seems to be active/involved in his community. Based on hsi posts, he appears to have somewhat of a grudge of how current elected officials carry out the functions of their seat.

You do the reasearch and see what you find... I do not know if the Bronx Political machine will back him or if he's with them or what the case may be.

A rumor out there is that Councilwoman Maria Baez's daughter is being "groomed" for the seat. Any info. on her?

I heard from a good source that Rock Hackshaw wants to make another run for office in either the 40th or 45th council districts in 2009. It all depends on the outcome of the Parker vs. Stewart Senate race next year. They are saying that he is looking at all his options including Congress (11th) or Assembly (42nd) in 2008, or Senate (21st) in 2010. They are saying that Charles Barron,  Al Sharpton, David Patterson, Eric Adams and quite a number of progressive black electeds will endorse whatever he runs for in the near future. What's the deal Rock. Wazzup wid all this?
Submitted by JB. (not verified) on Mon, 05/21/2007 - 12:59pm.
I doubt the last post. Rock is no insider. No one will endorse him. All those who are in office now who he helped and worked with over the years will probably find him too controversial. This includes John Sampson and Charles Barron. And in the 42nd assembly race there are three Haitians running already so he cant run there. I doubt he would run for Congress and thats his best race but he doesn't know it. In 2009 in the 46th Council district the word is that Gordy Brazile will try to replace Lew Fidler AND FOR THE FIRST TIME A BLACK WILL REPRESENT THIS SEAT. Both Darlene Mealy and Tish James are  getting challenged. Nick Perry is running for Brooklyn Boro president. John Sampson for District Attorney. Paul Washington will try to run for Barrons old council seat and so is Jacko again, and also Carlos Bristol. It is still early Jerry.

I really doubt Rock will run, especially in the 40th.

I think everyone involved in politics knows people expressing interest in various seats.

Off the top of my head I've heard names mentioned and spoken with people interested or planning runs for the following seats: Yassky, De Blasio, Sears, Katz, Quinn, Vallone, Jr. and Jackson (other than anyone mentioned above). None of these people are ready to declare (nor, I think should they be this far out), so I'm not going to list them.

On a side note, it was good to see you yesterday Jerry, I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to talk. I came close to meeting Gatemouth yesterday, too! Alas, it's probably not meant to be.

105pm, why wouldn't Rock run in the 40th? he will make a far better rep than Eugene and you know it. Why don't we draft him on the blogs here on Room 8, and make a blog candidate. Has this has ever been done with successs? Lets do a blog candidate for 2009 council.

Rock Hackshaw is too much in to that Caribbean-American stuff for his own good. And don't forget that the Clarkes will never support him even if Nick Perry and Kendall Stewart supported him, and I doubt that too. Remember he attacks them all when he gets angry. He is an exceptionally good candidate with big problems. And he is well qualified too and articulates the issues as good as anyone in Brooklyn. I don't know if he can win. They say he is too controversial.

Let's not Forget Frank Seddio, running for Fidler's seat

Maybe Chris Owens should run for David Yassky's seat, since Yassky is being term limited out and he had all kinds of exposure in that district during the congressional campaign.  I think that is a more realistic race for Chris to win than Brooklyn Borough President or Public Advocate.
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 05/21/2007 - 3:51pm.
Hear that the race to succeed Leroy Comrie/Archie Spigner seat in Southeast Queens is getting interested. The contenders seem to be Congressman Greg Meeks aide Brian Simons, attorney Joan Flowers and Reuben Wills, aide to State Sen. Reuben Wills. However, the major scuttlebutt is that Meeks' wife, Simone-Marie, has her eye on the seat. Which would pretty much eliminate all the contenders.

The OBVIOUS race for Chris Owens to make is another challenge to Yvette Clarke next year. He doesn't have the confidence in a victory but he would win. I am sure of this. I find that the Clarkes are despised in many corners nowadays. I run in to this over and over all the time. Something is amiss. There is an anti Yvette sentiment growing and getting worse.

The 09 Council election season on Staten Island will be a circus.

At least 10 people will consider chasing the Democratic nomination for Michael McMahon's seat and look for 3 or more Dems to to fight for the right to win Democratic control of Batman Jimmy Oddo's seat.

He will make a far better rep than all the other Latino candidates in the list, he's well known in the area, with all the skills necessary to be a Queens council member

Yes, it is true that I am analyzing all my options for a future run for public office (again). Given the harsh reality of the "money" factor in contemporary elections, I don't see an imminent run at the preesent time. I wll cntinue to evaluate and (re)evaluate and (re) evaluate. Any decision to run will be made at least one full year before any primary; that way I will have sufficient time to do the requisite fundraising correctly.

Well, in the Village it's full speed ahead with Brad Hoyleman against Andrew Berman for Chris Quinn's old seat.  Brad is an avid fence-sitter and soon to be chair of Community Board Two; Andrew is the outspoken advocate for the historic preservation of the Village.  Maria Passanante Derr could enter this race as well -- she has the moxy needed to run.  She's just completing a term as chair of Community Board Two.

In Community Board One-land, currently it's Julie Menin, current chair of CB1 against Madelyn WIls, much vilified former chair of CB1.  Wils has the unique distinction of inspiring a blog in 2002 comprised of angry, sad, and upset 9/11 families objecting to her harsh treatment of them at meetings of CB1.  Carry on, wicked witch!

Rosalie,

That's exactly what the Republicans have been telling us to do since the 2000 election!  Stealing an election via the Supreme Court or pathetically packing a small progressive democratic club to "win" is wrong and disgusting.

How dare you tell anyone to just roll over and play dead?  Standing up to bullies starts at home.  That's all Kevin and his sycophants are and someone has to stand up to them.

I only write this because I am secretly in love with Kevin and he loves me but his family, whaddaya call it, does not approve of man-boy (or is it psychopath and pathetic bully) love.

According to NYS finance disclosure of the Bronx Democratic Trustees Committee (http://www.elections.state.ny.us/reports/rwservlet?cmdkey=efs_sch_report+p_filer_id=A05279+p_e_year=2006+p_freport_id=B+p_transaction_code=F)

Ululy Martinez resides at 1882 Grand Concourse, which is in the 14th Council District. If he runs, would it be for this district? If so, would this mean that Haile Rivera would not be the machine's choice? Very unlikely given the fact that Ululy has been around Jose for many years.... Looks like Haile might have an uphill battle or maybe he could make history by not only becoming the first Dominican-American City Councilmember from the Bronx but also by defeating the bronx political establishment, which has become so corrupted these days.

 Who would you go for?

Submitted by HaileRivera2009 on Tue, 05/22/2007 - 12:33pm.

Hello everyone, I need to make things clear on the possibility of a Haile Rivera for City Council candidacy.

Would I like to run?
Yes! It has been my dream to run for public office so that I can help those in dire need of help. I have some bold ideas that I hope the people (voters) embrace as well.

Am I running for City Council in 2009?
Honestly, I would like to. However, I am focusing my time and effort in building Hands On New York, Inc., a 501 (c)3 I co-founded in 2002 to help needy families and individuals. I am also trying to open a food pantry and that has been taking much of my time lately (your donations are welcome).

I thank those who have promoted a possible Haile Rivera for City Council campaign. It would be an honor to be elected into such a position. And yes, I would become the 1st Dominican-born Councilmember from The Bronx.

Those of you who have any comments/suggestions, I can be emailed at: hailerivera@yahoo.com

If I do decide to run, I would definitely announce it here (take my word). Take care everyone.

My best to all! Haile Rivera

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this Haile, but if you run against the candidate of Jose Rivera and the Bronx Dems, YOU DO NOT STAND A CHANCE!
It's good you have ambitions but in the Bronx, what Jose and the machine say, it's what goes. It's just the nature of the game.
And if you do decide to run anyways, then you will dig your own political grave my friend. Ululy Martinez is a guy well-respected in the community and has been loyal to Jose Rivera and the Bronx Democrats. And you? Well, I leave that up to others to decide.
Good luck (you'll need plenty of it).

29th D. should be a great race.  Look for a Michael Cohen v. Howard Pollack v. (maybe) Dan Hevesi.  I hope at least the Cohev v. Pollack matchup happens since the two worked together for a long time and it would be nice to see Pollack can beat Cohen at his own game.

I'll third Brian Simon in the 31st and Julissa Ferrera in the 21st.

Crispus - In what seats are those candidates running?

I hear Pete Gleason in running in the 1st, along with Margaret Chin, Madelyn Wils and Julie Menin.

Brad Hoylman, Rachel Lavine, Arthur Schwartz and Andrew Berman all running in the 3rd.

Helen Rosenthal, Marc Landis, Jason Haber and Micah Lasher all running in the 7th.

Does Loraine Coyle Koppell take Oliver’s seat in the 12th? I think Ari Hoffnung is making another bid.

I hear John Frank may make another run at the 19th.

Carlos Manzano has moved to the 21st and is running there, but then so are Marlene Tapper and many other candidates.

Paul Vallone for the 22nd.

Bryan PuFolks, Rudy Greco, Luis Rosero and Danny Dromm and Alfonso Quiroz are all looking at the 25th, but then so are many other candidates.

Is Joe Conley running again in the 26th? Is Jimmy Van Bramer who lives there now running? How many Irish candidates will the field attract this time?

Brian Simon and Ruben Wils in the 27th.

Lynn Schulman and Howard Pollock are in the 29th.

Frank Gulluscio in the 32nd.

I hear Joanne Simon and Alison Hirsch for the 33rd.

Tiffany Raspberry in the 36th – Is Annette looking to come back? Or her son?

It's very good for the citizens of New York  to have a change in the City Council. Especially that Councilman Domenic M. Recchia , Jr. won't be around. He's a real BUM. The Daily News had it right when they gave him the Knucklehead Award back in 2006. His attendance record was pretty awful too. He ranked 12th out of the 17 Brooklyn Council Members. Not very good Domenic. Especially after a  $12.500 raise.

Oh, like the "other side" didn't bring in voters to pack the club?    I think BDFC should be concentrating on more important things, like elections, the war and helping candidates raise money, cummunity problems, etc  than the in fighting that's been going on.  My God, if Kevin sneezes we have a 15 minute arguement about it.

How dare I tell you to roll over and play dead?  I'm not telling you anything of the sort.  If you were a mature person you wouldn't have to use someone else's name to post your garbage but you don't have the guts to identify yourself.  Standing up to bullies - I'm doing that right now (and have for as long as I can remember) I'm standing up to you and I would have no problem telling that to you in person.

Additionally, unless you can prove the charges you made about Kevin I would suggest that you stop posting them.  I believe they can be considered libal.

I recently read a political column in the Forum South -a local queens weekly newspaper from Howard Beach - that "little" Eric is running again in the 32nd  for Republican District Leader - he's evidently runing for both the male and female leader positions against Eddie O'Hare of Broad Channel and Joanne Ariola of Howard Beach - talk about being mixed up - If gets 10% of the vote he'll be extremely lucky - I hear most people in the district think he's a young twerp that's in way over his head and that's still wet behind the ears.

Hi, Jerry!

To address your question directly ...

33rd CC: Joanne Simon, currently District Leader in the 52nd AD is interested in succeeding David Yassky. With the departure of Kenneth Adams (formerly of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce) to an even nicer job and the appointment of Mark Peters to Eliot Spitzer's administration, Simon would be the frontrunner. I have yet to hear any other serious names, though Ken Diamondstone might consider this race (if he can't beat State Senator Marty Connor in 2008). Carl Andrews does not live in the 33rd CD; I don't live in the 33rd and I do not plan to move into the 33rd ...

35th CC: Leticia James may be challenged, but I can't imagine that challenge coming from anyone serious and I can't imagine her having to worry too much. Overall, Tish is popular, well known, quality stuff, and a leader in many ways (with the possible exception of political endorsements ...) I'm sure she would like to be the next Speaker of the Council and would probably make a good one.

36th CC: From The Parkside Group, Tiffany Raspberry's name keeps floating out there to succeed Al Vann. Some have mentioned Taharka Robinson's name as well (one of Assemblymember Annette Robinson's sons). They are VERY different, but each brings something unique to the table.

38th CC: David Galarza is considering another attempt to win this Council seat.

39th CC: Josh Skaller, currently President of the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, has already started to organize a 2009 campaign organization. Other names mentioned include Craig Hammerman -- previous Council candidate and District Manager of Community Board 6, and at least two members of Community Board 6.

40th CC: Who knows ...

41st CC: No name has been seriously floated yet against Darlene Mealy.

42nd CC: Names I hear are Paul Washington (formerly on Charles Barron's staff), Greg "Jocko" Jackson of Brownsville Recreation Center fame, and young activist Keith Kinch.

45th CC: Expect two-time bridesmaid Sam Taitt to run for this open seat. If incumbent Kendall Stewart somehow defeats State Senator Kevin Parker in 2008, however, expect the ensuing Special Election to include Parker as well as Taitt. There will probably be numerous others as well.

Borough President - Brooklyn: Councilman Charles Barron has announced. Assemblymember Nick Perry says he's running. State Senator Velmanette Montgomery is mulling a candidacy. Councilmembers Bill DiBlasio and Dominic Recchia are rumoured to be considering getting into this race. Oh, and I'm considering this race as well. What better way to put an end to the Markowitz era of overdevelopment, Community Board purges and vengeful politics ...

Later ...
