Another Voting Non-ScandalFollowing up on Sunday’s misleading report about voter registration forms, Monday’s New York Post has another misleading story about the identification required to vote. The Post states that – “at the polls, voters are asked to show some form of photo ID, like a driver's license, to prove their identity.” As anyone who has voted in New York can tell you, this is not true! A form of identification is required of some but not all first time voters – only new voters who registered under the Motor Voter Law. And a photo ID is not required. The identification is supposed to prove a voter’s residence not his or her citizenship, so such material as a utility bill, is sufficient proof. I'm sure that a small number of non-citizens are registered to vote in New York and every other state in the union. I do not think any state checks to insure that all voters are citizens. All assume that the penalty for non-citizens voting is enough to prevent a large number of people doing so.
The New York State Board of Elections gets many reports of people who lie on their voter registration forms and they do not enforce the laws that apply, espcially from politically connected people that vote from address but live at another address for example if you vote from a Bronx address but you actually live at another address in Rockland County. There is a real Scandal in this Post article
From the NY Post 10/21/07:
'In order to register, a person must sign an affidavit stating that they are an American citizen.
"You assume that people don't lie, and that's what the form says," (State Board of Elections spokeman) Daghlian said. "It's an affidavit you sign under penalty of perjury."
But Daghlian concedes, "Nobody checks it" to determine its validity."
Do you think non-citizens are already voting in New York?
Has the board ever found anyone who lied on the voter registration form?
