Drivers' Licenses & VotingI received a few calls on Monday in response to my 2 posts debunking the New York Post on the issue of drivers’ licenses and voting. I pointed out to the callers something that the Post reporter apparently does not understand. A New York State drivers’ license is not now and has never been proof that you are eligible to register to vote! For example legal immigrants who are not citizens are eligible to get a drivers license but can’t vote. Jerry, you are technically correct but all someone needs to do is CLAIM to be a legal citizen and they can register. If voting isn't part of the hidden agenda here, as many non-partisan people like Lou Dobbs believe it is, then why is Spitzer insisting that we still give motor voter applications to people who apply for a license without proof of legal status?
There are reasonable compromises for all the issues that have been raised but Spitzer refuses to compromise. Why not just mark the licenses for people without proof of legal status "For driving purposes only, not for proof of ID"? That would end the debate and we could all move forward.

I've done a fair amount of reporting on low-level shenanigans in immigrant neighborhoods in Queens, which consist mostly of dead or non-existent people signing petitions. Have yet to see clear evidence of a single illegal immigrant voting. I understand the theory, but -- who's going to risk his immigration status for a tiny, tiny influence on an election?
Ben, how would you expect to see such a thing? Is there some box someone checks that says "this is an illegal voter"? Besides, some here illegally isn't risking their status, they have no status. I'd be willing to bet if you too the list of voters and ran it through immigration records you'd find many names missing.
Here's how it often works. A crafty district leader or some other local political leader goes out and registers people to vote at their home. They then have them fill out an absentee ballot designating said local leader as the voters "designee" to pick up the ballot at the BOE.
The designee makes sure the ballot is filled out "properly" and has the voter sign on the dotted line. Then they hand deliver the ballot back to the BOE. The voter never needs to set foot in the poll site so nobody has a chance to check ID.
Having an extra 50 or so votes is very powerful for anyone seeking office. This is just one possible scenario I've come across. There are many others.
I agree that 50 votes would be a big deal, though hardly enough to matter in any major election. it also strikes me as the likeliest scenerio, among unlikely ones, and is pretty small-time -- it's hardly the orchestrated partisan conspiracy that Republicans are currently floating.
But as you say, these are all things that are documented in public records. If this is happening, why can't anybody come up with an example? This is exactly the sort of case that the Justice Department would have loved to make at some point in the last six years, and they certainly have the resources and the data available. Or do you feel the Bush White House has been covering this practice up?
Ben, you're missing the point. A drivers license is the key to access almost every aspect of legitimate life in America. It's used for driving, yes, but also for voting, for selecting jury's, for getting a gun, to get into secure locations, etc, etc. If even ONE illegal immigrant takes a license they should never have had in the first place and uses that to game our system it will be a travesty of our own making. It's not about how many, its a matter of principle. Ben, you know I support immigration, and higher levels than we currently allow. Our broken immigration policy is why we have such high levels of illegal immigration and why I support finding a way to assimilate them.
