NY Times "Correction"

After my item about William Kristol’s incorrect assertion was picked up by politico.com, salon.com & MSNBC, among other media outlets, the NY Times printed a unusual correction today (Wednesday, May 21, 2008)

In his column on Monday, Bill Kristol said he could not find a recent primary in which the candidate who would go on to win the nomination lost by as big a margin as Barack Obama lost by (41 points) in West Virginia. Mitt Romney won the essentially uncontested Utah primary on Feb. 5 with about 90 percent of the vote.

I say the correction is unusual because of the editorial comment that the Utah Primary was essentially uncontested.

Perhaps the Times is using the same research that Kristol did because, once again in less than 10 minutes, I was able to find out that McCain was endorsed in the Primary by Utah’s Republican Governor Jon Huntsman and that McCain campaigned in the state before the Primary, calling it a battleground.

McCain called Utah "a battleground state among Republicans" but said he didn't like so many early primaries. Huntsman was scheduled to appear with McCain Friday evening at a major fund-raiser in the Phoenix Convention Center that costs as much as $2,300 a person to attend. McCain arrived in Utah Thursday morning and spent time with Huntsman before attending a fund-raiser at a private Federal Heights home where he raised more than $150,000.

Since 'early' is by nature a relative term, I wonder when he would have the primaries held in order to make them "later"?  It seems that McTurtle McBush, like too many other high-profile poor sportsmen in American politics, chooses to (pre-emptively) regard contests that don't come out in his favor, as flawed or even illegitimate.  Obviously, Kristol and the NYT regard them as virtually non-existant.

mccain contested utah even more than obama contested west virginia, so the NYT looks dumb for trying to cover Kristol's error by making it seem the margin was so large b/c McCain didn't contest Utah.

its op-ed space to Mr. Kristol and monitors the content not at all?

Thanks Jerry.

This is at least the second time Kristol has had to have a correction issued in the few months he's been in residence at the Times. How many chances does get to spout his often factually dubious and sometimes factually inccorect rhetoric before they get rid of him?

I understand that the Page wants to be a little more balanced, but, really, they might as well have Bill O'Reilly.

That's 4 factual corrections in 6 months.

If I did that in my contracting documentation I would imagine, and hope, I'd be fired. But hey, I've just got a regular job -- not like I'm a columnist at the NYT.

Also, aside from it being a contested "uncontested" battleground state, weren't there something like 6 other primaries/caucases that disproved the facts of this paid political operative masquerading as a columnist?

... Utah was not the only state which McCain lost by a vast margin. The Times selectively chose that one to try to imply that it didn't count, since that was Romney's home state.
