Who's RunningOn Thursday, July 10, Party designating petitions were filed at the New York City Board of Elections. This is the list of possible upcoming contested Primaries, based on the petitions filed. This list will be changed as candidates withdraw and/or removed from the ballot. There also may have been some errors made in compiling the list. I am including some commentary about some of the races. As usual, most contests are on the Democratic side. In cases where districts cross Borough lines, I’m listing the race in the borough where I see them listed first. Manhattan Democrats Congressman Jerry Nadler is being challenged by Brian Sullivan in the 8th CD. Mr. Sullivan is motivated by Congressman Nadler’s refusal to support impeachment of Vice President Cheney. State Senate Senator Marty Connor (25 SD) is opposed by Dan Squadron in a contest that needs no further explanation. Senator Jose Serrano in the 28th SD has a challenge from former Council candidate Anthony Curry. Assembly In the 64th AD, Speaker Sheldon Silver is opposed by Luke Henry and Paul Newell in another race that needs no commentary. In the 68th AD, Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV has 2 opponents who lost for District Leader last year – George Espada, Sr. & Edward Gibbs. 69th AD Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell is opposed by former Council candidate Michael Brown. In the 72nd AD, Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat is being challenged by Councilman Miguel Martinez. State Committee State Senator Bill Perkins is running for re-election to the State Committee, along with Peggy Morales in the 68th AD with opposition from Talib Abdul-Hakeem & Carolyn Nowell. 69th AD State Committeeman Bob Ginsberg is opposed by Community Free Democrats club President Larry Hirsch. In the 72 AD, there is a 3 way for Male State Committee among Wigberto Astacio, Rafael Escano & Ricardo Urena and a 2 way fight form Female between incumbent Joan Serrano Laufer and Marina Torres. Judges 3 candidates filed for Surrogate Judge – Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling, the County Democratic endorsed candidate, attorney Norma Anderson & Counsel to the Public Administrator John Reddy, Jr. 2 Court Attorneys and a Legal Aid attorney are running for a Countywide Civil Court position. The Court Attorneys are Michael Katz, the County candidate and Nancy Bannon. The Legal Aid lawyer is Richard LaFontaine. Independence Party As is often the case, there are Independence Party contests among the factions aligned with or opposed to Lenora Fulani. In most cases, I don’t know who with whom, so I will just the districts and the names. But note who is running in the 66th AD! 64 AD – Lois Hinman vs. Michael Zumbluskas Ashley Prudhomme vs. Carrie Sackett 66 AD – Bernard Goetz vs. Fred Newman Joyce Snyder vs. Jaqueline Salit 68 AD – Edward Brady vs. Eyam Hymn Marian Rich vs. Neomi Vazquez 73 AD – Michael Drucker vs. Alan Harris 75 AD – James Horton vs. Kyle O’Brien Bronx Democrats There are series of contests in the Bronx between County backed candidates and the candidates backed by a group of elected officials who have broken with County Leader Jose Rivera and call themselves the Rainbow Challenge. Some candidates not in either faction are also running. Where I know who is with County and who with the Rainbow, I will note that. Congress 7th CD Congressman Joe Crowley is opposed by former State Senator Dennis Coleman and someone named Jose Serrano, who is not the neighboring Congressman or the Senator, 16th CD Congressman Jose Serrano is opposed by frequent candidate Curtis Brooks. State Senator 32nd SD Senator Ruben Diaz (Rainbow) has 2 opponents – Israel Cruz (County) & Luis Monge. In the 33rd SD, Senator Efrain Gonzalez is opposed by former Senator Pedro Espada and perennial candidate Richard Soto. Assembly 76th AD Assemblyman Peter Rivera is challenged by former Assemblyman Israel Martinez. In the 77th AD, Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene faces former School Board member Carmelo Saez. County Leader Jose Rivera is opposed in the 78th AD by Jose Torres. 79th AD Assemblyman Michael Benjamin (Rainbow) is opposed by County backed Sigfredo Gonzalez and by Jose Padilla. 80th AD incumbent Naomi Rivera is challenged by Irene Estrada Rukaj. 82nd AD Assemblyman Mike Benedetto is opposed by Egidio Sementilli. In the 83rd AD, incumbent Carl Heastie (Rainbow) faces Sherman Browne (County) and Brenda Francis. 85th AD Assemblyman Ruben Diaz, Jr. (Rainbow) is opposed by Carmen Hernandez (County) and Gabriel Nieves. 86th AD Assemblyman Luis Diaz is challenged by Gloria McFarland. State Committee 76th AD Michael Savage (County) vs. Frank Benitez & Carlton Curry & Barbara Brown (County) vs. Therese Okeh 78th AD BJ Rivera (County) vs. Miguel Santana & Donna Benjamin (County) vs. Maria Gonzalez 79th AD Matthew Chapman (County) vs. Cornell Nolton (Rainbow) vs. Wilford Pickney vs. Everton Wilkins. The Court Attorneys are Maria Matos, the County candidate and Elizabeth Taylor, backed by the Rainbow. The lawyer is Verena Powell. Independence Party 80th AD Steven Gallo vs. Keith McHenry. Brooklyn Democrats Congress In the 10th CD, incumbent Ed Towns is opposed by Kevin Powell in another race that needs no elaboration. State Senate In a rare battle among 3 public officials Senator Kevin Parker is opposed by Council members Simcha Felder & Kendall Stewart in the 21st SD. Assembly In the open 40th AD, 6 candidates filed petitions – Inez Barron, Nathan Bradley, Donnezzetta Brown, Ken Evans, Winchester Key & Earl Williams. There is some strange stuff happening in this district, which I can’t explain. Maybe Rock or Gatemouth can. 42nd AD Assemblywoman Rhoda Jacobs is opposed by Michele Adolphe. In the 50th AD, Assemblyman Joe Lentol is challenged by Andre Soleil. 55th AD incumbent William Boyland Jr. has 3 opponents, Royston Antoine, Leonard Hatter & Bilal Malik. 56th AD Assemblywoman Annette Robinson is opposed by Cenceria Edwards. 59th AD Assemblyman Alan Maisel faces H.R. Clarke. State Committee 40th AD There are 3 men running – incumbent Earl Williams, Andre Mitchell & Albert Scott and 3 women – Carol Faison, Carolyn Faulkner & Alice Lowman. 43rd AD Incumbent Jesse Hamilton is opposed by former Council candidate Geoffrey Davis & Wayne Pitts & incumbent Shirley Patterson faces Charlene Williams. 46th AD Incumbent Delia Schack is challenged by Jeannie May. 50th AD Incumbents Steve Cohn & Linda Minucci are opposed by Assembly candidate Andrei Soleil & Andrea Jones. 55th AD Incumbent William Boyland Jr. has 2 opponents for State Committee – Daniel Goodine & Bilal Malik. The 3 candidates for the Female slot are Kamaria Boyland, Cleopatra Brown & Barbara Zinnamon. 56th AD Incumbent State Committee members Assemblywoman Annette Robinson & Councilman Al Vann are opposed by Cenceria Edwards & Uwem Umoh. 57th AD Incumbent William Saunders faces Walter Mosley III Judge In the 1st Civil Court District, 2 private practioners, Roger Adler & Devin Cohen are facing off. Republicans State Senate Two Republicans, Micael Freeman-Saulsberre & Victor Guarino filed to run in the strongly Democratic 17th SD. Queens Democrats Congress 6th CD Congressman Greg Meeks is opposed by Senate staffer Ruben Wills. State Senate 10th SD Incumbent Shirley Huntley is challenged by former Councilman Allan Jennings. 15th SD Councilman Joe Addabbo & former candidate Albert Baldeo are competing for the chance to challenge Republican Senator Serph Maltese. 16th SD Senator Toby Stavisky is opposed by former candidate Robert Schwartz. Assembly 22nd AD Assemblywoman Ellen Young is challenged by Grace Meng, the daughter of former Assemblyman Jimmy Meng. Meng is running a full slate of candidates for Party positions also. So when I list them, I will note which candidates are with Meng & which with Young. 31st AD Incumbent Michelle Titus is opposed by Donovan Richards. 34th AD Assemblyman Ivan Lafayette has a challenge from former Council candidate Marlene Tapper. 22nd AD Donald Henton (Young) & Loretta Weiss (Young) vs. Edwin Salas (Meng) & Hyleta Babb-Summers. Republicans 13th CD There is still much confusion about what will happen among Republicans. Petitions for 5 candidates were filed – the late Frank Powers, former Assemblyman Robert Straniere, Jamshad Wyne, Paul Atanasio & Carmine Morano. Who actually runs is anybody’s guess. Conservatives 13 CD Both Paul Atanasio & Carmine Morano filed petitions. There will only be a Primary if the Conservative Party leaders allow Morano a legal waiver to run. Independence Party State Committee 60th AD Paul Gibilisco vs. Alan Weinman & Janis Gregory vs. Marta Pabon 61st AD George Palmer vs. William Tallman & Sarah Lyons vs. Ellen Simonetti. 62nd AD John Besignano vs. Frank Morano & Judith May vs. Stephanie Morano. 63rd AD Thomas Hamilton vs. Michael Reape & Anita Lerman vs. Rosie Canty. The dogs that didn’t bark Despite much speculation, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke has no Primary opponent, 30th District Council candidate Charles Ober did not file to run again and the Queens Republicans are not running against each other this year. Tell me, why you list Steve Harrison as "former candidate." Steve is running in this race and you owe him, his staff, volunteers and supporters an apology for your mistake.
All Skurnik meant was the Harrison was formerly the Democraitc nominee, which is after all his claim to fame. He said Harrison was running. There was no "mistake"; at worst just inartful writing. How paranoid can one get?  ANDRE SOLEIL ran for office before. He ran against Velmanette Montgomery on every line but Democratic (1996)for the State Senate (19).
 So I asumme it's some jerk from Ingersol or Whitman who thinks the entire district is in Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy, when in actuality the district's population is 58% white and 12% black. If he were at all serious, he would have at least found an Hispanic to run for female leader. So, either a loon, or possibly put up by Tony Herbert (hence the Republican connection) or Kevin Powell to juice primary turnout in a particular area (or maybe by Ed Towns to wake up the Hasidim by giving Lentol and Cohn races). But probably nothing that sophisticated, probably just a nut. I corrected the typo regarding Bill Perkins' AD. Thank's Gatey.
Ramblinparonia is correct that no offense was intended to Harrison. In a few districts, I identify candidates as former candidates.
I should have included in the list of things that did not happen - only one candidate named Sheldon Silver, the real one, filed petitions.
I don't think the candidate running against Lentol has anything to do with Anthony Herbert. Since he did not file petitions to run for anything from any Party.
He was also involved with Community School Board elections in District 13. Remember those?

Because if it is, there is apparently no primary election for State Assembly, State Senate or House of Represenatives where I live. Again. And probably little if any general election too, given that virtually no one is willing to vote for a non-Democrat around here. And if Obama is sufficiently certain to win in NY State, no real election for President either.

13th CD Conservative: Only Atanasio filed petitions, not Morano. No primary. The following are pro-Fulani: Hinman, Sackett, Newman, Salit, Brady, Drucker, Horton. No, I am neither "put up by Tony Herbert, Kevin Powell or Ed Towns. No, I am not a "jerk" from Walt Whitman or Ingersol who thinks the district is Black. I am very aware that the district is not a "Black" district. I am also aware that I am not limited by my racial characteristics, and that the new demographic of the 50th AD is also NOT limited by racial profiles. As to "jerk," I have been called worse things by better people. As far as seriousness goes, I unsuccessfully looked for a Hispanic female; since race' effect on politics remains reality. We however, ran a Jewish male for State Committee, I am just a substitution for the nomination to that office. Yitchok Cohen, a friend of mine, declined nomination because he is honest, discovering that he was not in the district (missed it by two blocks in Williamsburg). Steve Cohen suffers the same problem, he has been out of the district for 10 years. Your information is old. Andrea Jones, my friend and a Black woman, has also declined the State Committeewoman nomination and has been replaced by Rebecca Roy. Let's talk demographics. I am a Black middle classed man with a J.D., M.B.A., who is a candidate for my Rel.D., an ordained minister, a practicing attorney, realtor, former college professor, home owner, off-Broadway producer, professional visual and performing artist, published author, with several years of governmental experience, and years of involvement with civil rights, environmental protection, and good-government charities, and and owner of several small businesses. My running mate is a married, pregnant, White, 10-year veteran public school art teacher, home owner, with a M.S. Education from Columbia University, BFA in visual arts, and environmental/community activist. Have you seen the recent demographics of the industries-employment, academic achievement, earnings, and concerns of the active young populace of the 50th AD? May I suggest that these demographics fit Mrs. Roy and myself like a glove? May I also suggest that these new demographic types could care less about my race (see BARAK OBAMA)? May I also suggest that these new residents, that have so radically altered the district's demographic, are also less than enchanted with Seneca Club politics, a out-of-the-district male leader, a "rubber stamp" unknown female district leader, and the hereditary Assemblyman whose family have presided over the two largest inland oil spills ever? This is not the working-class White district that originally elected the Lentol family. Remember the Barak-Hillary 'dream team" that we Democrats salivated about . . . well I got it. He explained, "A few welts on the behind is not an indication of abuse." The primary theme of his brief campaign against Montgomery was that she is ineffective. "We didn't create the office of Senate to elect our favorite grandma, have her smile at us, and have us call her senator," said Soleil, who in the last decade has been a Democrat, Republican, unaffiliated voter, Libertarian, and finally a Democrat again." But I guess you must target them, since the district's numerous y poor Hasidim, Latinos and African-Americans, many of whom live in NYCHA Housing Projects, and are often dependent upon entitlements like Meidicaid and Food Stamps, are unlikely to be interested in supporting a former Chair of the Kings County Libertarian Party. Your take on the demographics of the district has some salient points, nonetheless, they are points with a limit--the District went 54%-46% for Hillary Clinton, indicating that oldtimers still retain their majority. Further, Lentol not only will clean your clock among the old-style Clinton type voters, but he'll eat your lunch among the Yuppies. No one is more aware of the district's changing demographics than Joe Lentol, who has let the shift liberate his inner liberal. In the last few years, Lentol has publicly and emotionally, in terms that show unmistakable contrition, changed his position on the death penalty and gay rights. His speech in favor of same-sex marriage could almost bring tears to one's eyes. If he were merely pandering, he could have cast the vote without the speech--one must assume it came from the heart, and given the district's still strong Hasidic and traditional Catholic presence, it took a bit of courage. Finally, it should be noted that Lentol works hard. The top issues amongst all voters, oldtimers and new, in the Northside and Greenpoint are environmental--and Lentol's record on those issues ensures that he has a strong follwing amongst the district's newcomers. And, he'll even give you a run for the money amongst black voters. So, Andre, the answer is that perhaps one day a newcomer will shake up politics in AD 50, though the presidential primary results indicate that the date has not yet arrived. When that date arrives, oldtimers who've been asleep might get suprised, but Joe Lentol has not been asleep. And if someone is to get surprised, it will be by someone in tune with the district's priorities, and I submit, based upon your record, that that person is not you. More about Mr. Soleil than anyone should have to know. Though, I'd like to ask Mr. Soleil if he really blames Lentol's family for the two largest inland oil spills ever?

And does it matter? OK, it doesn't matter as to the outcome, but what does it mean? Is Obama quietly backing Powell as payback to Towns for supporting Clinton? And is McKinney indirectly (through Clemente) backing Powell to send a message to Obama that she represents no threat to his candidacy? Too byzantine? Disagree. Complex positional chess game in progress as to role of third parties in the General, and 10th CD Primary is one of the keys to its understanding.

Sometimes we take Google for granted, but it's worth stating what may be obvious: it has completely changed the political discourse. Every candidate is an open book. Gatemouth (once he had the right spelling) found in a matter of seconds my postings on Andre Soleil, who four years ago gave me an interview that I'll never forget, and one that may haunt him forever. Because of Google, it will always be discoverable. But I will say that if Joe Lentol can change his position on gay marriage, Andre Soleil can change his position on corporal punishment.
..but before I'm convinced, I'd like to have ACS inspect for welts.

As to the 40th--Barron is the Barron candidate; Williams the incumbent Male Leader (and therefore, the de facto County candidate) and Bradley represents the Diane Gordon faction (does this bring along Mitch Alter and John Sampson?
