The Gang of Three Conspiracy Theory

First, I have to link Dan Jacoby's latest post from Daily Gotham.  I had the same idea without seeing his piece, but since he posted his first, he deserves the hat tip. http://dailygotham.com/blog/dan_jacoby/behind_the_three_amigos.

I think the sign of a true political junkie is when the Machiavellian machinations and conspiracy theories end up consuming your mind at all times of the day.  This morning, for no reason at all, I kept thinking out scenarios in which the Dems could keep the Senate and bring the Gang of Three into the fold.  The most obvious answer was Jeff Klein because of the Bronx connections with Espada and Diaz.  That led me to the same conclusion Dan Jacoby reaches in his post.  It's too much of a coincidence that the one person who everyone knows is hungry for the Senate Majority spot is from the same borough as two of the dissidents and has the most to gain from the entire thing.

Throw in the fact that it seems like there's going to be a special election for Boro Prez in the Bronx coming soon with Adolfo Carrion possibly going to D.C., and I wouldn't doubt that the real deal is Klein for Majority Leader in exchange for Diaz Jr. support for Boro Prez.  Think about it, Klein becomes one of the most powerful Dems in the state and Rubencito gets exactly what he's wanted for the last couple of years.  And really, if the Senate Majority Leader tells the party that he wants to support a candidate for Boro Prez in his backyard, do you really think Carl Heastie is going to stop him?

The whole thing is almost too diabolical.  Think about this.  Back when Espada won his seat, Klein would have had to began to conspire with Kruger, Diaz, Espada and Monserrate to sabotage Malcolm's chances to become Majority Leader by refusing to join the Democratic caucus. Things were going according to plan, when suddenly, Smith demonstrated that he had no backbone and was willing to give up whatever the remaining members wanted in order to bring them in.  At the Dem caucus to sell the meeting, Klein is the most outspoken member, extremely upset that Smith would concede to these backstabbers without first consulting it with the rest of the caucus.  This now puts Malcolm in the unenviable position is losing the support of his entire caucus as well as that of the rebels.  Coincidentally (as everything has been so far), today, Espada tells Fred "The Rat" Dicker that he would be willing to work with Jeff Klein as Majority Leader, thus setting up the next scene in this soap opera where the Dem caucus removes Malcolm, installs Klein and Klein, with the blessing of the caucus, then gives the rebels what they really want (Espada- Deputy ML+LuLu, Diaz-Rubencito BP, Kruger-Finance.

So what happens to Malcolm?  Deposed legislative leaders do not usually stick around to stay in the caucus (with the exception of Marty Connor), so my guess is that he gets appointed to head some type of executive agency where he can make $100K+ and ride out the rest of his public service life in relative anonymity.

Or, of course, everything could just be a coincidence.

...I think I implied weeks ago that this was possible:

"Not that I don’t think that election as Leader, of a particular Senator, who may be Latino, is possibly part of the Passions’ end game--it could well be. Nonetheless, it is hard to conceive that anyone in Albany, even the Senate Republicans, are irresponsible enough to let Pedro Espada or Ruben Diaz be the "Third Man in the Room." However, it is not inconceivable that the Passions are fronting for someone else who eventually intends to ride in to the rescue on a white (or brown) horse; it is also not inconceivable that the Passions are playing this game in the hopes of seducing someone into playing that role.

It takes thirty-two votes to elect a Leader of the Senate--currently, The Passions hold the balance of power between the parties; in 1965 those playing a similar game tied up the Senate for five weeks before eventually winning with Republican support.

But, this is not really about putting in Joe Serrano or Marty Dilan, anymore than it is about putting in Jeff Klein, Dean Skelos or Tom Libous; nor is it about keeping Malcolm Smith out. This is about being the ones who decide. And while there is probably a hierarchy of preference among each of the Passions (or even the possibility that they may share the same hierarchy), which may place a particular Latino in first place, I suspect that any of the aforementioned names--even Smith, or a player yet to be named (whatever the ethnicity), would suffice, for the right price."

Is it Roberto Ramirez in the backroom with a Klein, Vito Lopez in the parlour with a Dilan or Al D'Amato in the corner with a Skelos, or a player yet unnamed in the dark with a player to be named later?

I dunno, but I know it ain't just these three little men in a room. Something bigger is undoubtedly afoot.

On the other hand, I'll give Espada this--he is correct that Malcolm is looking less and less ready for prime time by the minute--it's very possible Malcolm may have jumped the shark and is ready to be cancelled.

And, while many may be liable for the blame, the one at the front of the blame-line is almost certainly Malcolm Himself. His repuration on all sides for lack of spine not is exceeded only by his reputation on all sides for for lacking credibility.

It may be time to bring on the bosses.

PS: Why would Heatie want to stop Ruben Jr.?

The Diazes halped make him the County Leader.

In control of so much of the money I earn, my childrens' education, the transportation system and therefore the economy, public safety, etc.

Is it the case that virtually everyone I know would be better? Or do I just not know the people I know as well as I think?

The only person who comes out of this looking good is Ron Paul. Separate my money and future from all these greedy, duplicitous people!

Gatey, I missed that piece, but kudos to you for bringing it up weeks ago. As far as Bx BP, I don't think that Heastie will or has any reason to oppose Diaz Jr., but it sure can't hurt Jr. if dad is the vote that puts Klein over the top. My point was that with the support of Heastie and Klein, Jr. has the spot virtually guaranteed

Take Malcolm; Lead Don put it best the other day at The Albany Project:

Great Metaphor. (0.00 / 0)
I am going to mix some and see where it leads.

Against the counsel of allies and the weight of history, you decide to negotiate with the terrorists.  You go into a meeting you didn't call, give them everything they want, and expect things to be OK.

You then go back to your allies who are like "eff you, dude," and you realize you have messed up, as you start to take a pounding for caving to idiots and selling out on a key issue.

When your allies rake you over the coals, rather than fess up, you then compound your strategic failure by lying to your allies.  You tell them you were just kidding, you weren't REALLY going to give the terrorists what they want, and that they won't REALLY get anything, so we are all ok and it's all good, right my loyal allies?

But wait, the terrorists are watching you spin your "success" on CNN and they are monitoring your troop movements on Google Earth.  They start to wonder whether you are like the crazy Saddam spokesman who was telling his homies everything was cool even as the Marines were taking a crap on one of Saddam's golden toilets.

Regardless, the terrorists now have tactical awareness and perhaps, the high ground.  All they are waiting for now is for you to cut the power at Nakatomi Tower.

They now know you are lying to them, and they are ready to kill some hostages because you are trying to punk them.  It's ok to punk terrorists, but they usually don't find out until just before the bomb you have planted in the getaway helicopter blows up or you go "yippe-ki-yay" and let them fall out a skyscraper window.

Your lying has killed your credibility - they can no longer trust you, even though they are the bad guys.  Your allies are suspicious of your motives, abilities, and integrity, and everyone is wondering whether you have the ability to manage through this crisis.

The terrorists are now flipping out - they said they had a deal for a helicopter, safe passage, and 72 virgins (whatever the number is).  You told your allies that you were just kidding with them, but your ALLIES are getting restless, because they are wondering if you lied to THEM about lying to the terrorists, because why would the terrorists be flipping out if they didn't think they had a deal?

And the funniest part - now that negotiations have FAILED, you NOW say that you WON'T negotiate - except on your terms!!!

You also say that that one of the terrorists' primary demands is off the table, after according to unnamed State Department sources (your allies) YOU GAVE IN (in this case on marriage equality).

It's as if in a desperate attempt to secure a Middle East peace deal, you told Hamas they can have Jerusalem, the Israelis went ballistic on you, you tried to backpedal, and now and everyone is saying this shit wouldn't have happened with Bush or Cheney.

Pretty nutty, huh?  Only in New York, kiddies, only in New York.

If Jeff Klein wanted to engage in a conspiracy to dump Malcolm, he could find a lot more stable a group to work with than the Uncalled for 3. Malcom's behavior in this is similiar to how he acted during the congestion pricing battle. He told the Mayor he could deliver the Democratic Conference in support without talking to anyone. When the members balked at it, Bloomberg learned not to trust Smith. No everyone is learning that Malcolm is an empty suit.
