FILINGS, FACEBOOK, AND KEVIN POWELL

Someone at the FEC needs to pay attention to what's going on in the 10th Congressional District race.

This week, as part of the New York Daily News' standard investigative reporting into all candidates and incumbents for any elected office, it was revealed that candidate Kevin Powell had not done his required financial disclosure reports (click here for the link), and also that his personal finances were in disorder (click here for the link).

It prompted Mr. Powell to pen a long-winded essay trying to invoke empathy from voters in similar circumstances...which in turn prompted me to take a look at look at his most recent filing. Here is the summary, copied and pasted directly from the FEC website.

Take a good look at what I highlighted in blue above.

Now take a look at this posting from Kevin Powell's Facebook page (click here for the link; as of today it's on page 17 of all his Facebook posts) with relevant text in bold type:

Kevin Powell for Congress UPDATE: We are just $5000 short
of our $100,000 goal for the month
.

We need as many of you as possible to make a small donation to
Kevin Powell for Congress to help us meet this goal by
Friday, Apr 30th deadline
. You can do so at www.kevinpowell.net

I have decided to run for Congress here in Brooklyn, New York,
because it is the right and necessary thing to do.
As a long-time resident of this district, I am outraged by the
arrested development in ...

According to the above Facebook posting from April 29, 2010 4:12PM, Mr. Powell raised $95,000 for the month of April. Yet according to his FEC filing, he raised $70,465.19 for a three month period that includes April, May, and June combined.

So here it is, one of two things is true:

  • Kevin Powell lied on his Facebook page and had actually raised significantly less money in April than he let on to his supporters, or...
  • Kevin Powell lied to the FEC in his quarterly filing, and a lot of money is missing

Something is wrong, either way.

Can Mr. Powell please set the record straight on this?
