Letitia James: A Strong Voice during Tough Times
What next for Letitia James? Voters from all walks of life are asking that she run for the 10th Congressional seat when current Congressman Ed Towns eventually retires. And, why not? Though she has served in a variety of positions in public life, many voters first became aware of Letitia James when she ran for the 35th Council District seat opened by the untimely death of Councilman James E. Davis. After a hard-fought challenge from Geoffrey Davis, the late Councilman’s brother, James emerged victorious. She served out Davis’ term, then successfully ran and won the seat in her own right. Most remarkable, James became the first city official to run on the Working Families Party line, and won. James took exception to the Atlantic Yards project being taken out of the City Council’s land review process. Her vocal opposition to the displacement of her constituents via eminent domain was heard across the state. She remains firmly in support of the Unity Plan’s alternative principle that the community needs affordable housing more than it needs a sports arena. Long before NYC Comptroller John Liu refused to sign off on any more contract extensions for CityTime, Letitia James sounded warnings. As Chair of the Contracts Committee, she held hearings that first discovered the fraud. When Michael Bloomberg sought to defy the will of the people on term limits, James stood in vocal opposition to the blatant power-grab. After a long, bitter fight that divided the city, Bloomberg ran and won a third term. In a blunt display of retribution, Council Speaker Christine Quinn removed James as Chair of Contracts and relegated her to the Sanitation Committee, presuming James would never be heard from again. But the Bloomberg Administration’s bungling of snow removal during the December 26-27, 2010 snowstorm made national news and gave James an opportunity to speak on national media of the plight of snow-bound ordinary New Yorkers unable to navigate streets. Throughout her tenure in the City Council, James has stood for the city’s working class. She has been a vocal advocate of equal pay legislation and a living wage for jobs created through projects that receive millions in tax breaks. James sponsored the Safe Housing Act, which addresses violations of the housing maintenance code and multiple dwellings. An advocate for the people, James consistently denounces Bloomberg budget proposals that would close fire-houses, lay off 6,000 employees and drastically reduce much-needed city services. James continues to be a firm advocate for child care and child safety. When Bloomberg defied a federal court order to increase the pay scale of home day care workers, James stood with them. James participated in hearings on child safety and stood with advocates to promote public service announcements urging young mothers to carefully screen their children’s caregivers after more than 40 black and brown children were killed by the mother’s significant other during a three-year period. She opposes the Bloomberg proposal to cut child care slots for working parents. When a racially offensive billboard stating “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb” was erected in lower Manhattan, James was first to sound the alarm. She created an online petition denouncing the billboard which receives hundreds of signatures within a day. She reached out to Rev. Al Sharpton to call a press conference on the issue. Before the press conference could occur, that billboard was removed… within 48 hours. Letitia James is an unwavering voice who speaks truth to power. When asked why she takes a firm stance on controversial city issues James said, “I thought it necessary to challenge the mayor whenever he is wrong or too Manhattan-centric.” Originally published in Our Time Press, June 23, 2011

 What about what voters want? It is regular voter-citizens who have been talking about James in Congress. Word is Jeffries has decided the 10th congressional seat is his, therefore no one should run against him. Really? Jeffries is barely known outside his district except for sponsoring legislation to force NYPD to no longer keep electronic stop-and-frisk data bases. Nothing in that legislation to allow for proof NYPD is complying. Neither did that legislation curtail stop-and-frisk. Lately, Jeffries is on his amend marijuana possession crusade. Both are somewhat worthy in some circles, but the 10ths constituencies vary broadly. Many aren't concerned about stop-and-frisk or marijuana possession. They have bigger issues to deal with. In addition, how many of those Jeffries is trying to appeal to can and/or do vote? Depending on their criminal status, they may or may not be able to vote in 2012 for anybody. Go in the ENY, Brownsville, Ocean Hill, Canarsie sections of the 10th and ask if anyone knows Jeffries. It will be more likely that folks on that side of town know about James because of term limits, Atlantic Yards, and the snowstorm fiasco. In addition, those closer to Jeffries district are still stauchly opposed to Atlantic Yards. They will remember who stood consistently for them. Hint: It wasn't Jeffries, who wavered on A.Y.throughout. In a head to head between him and James in his own district, Jeffries would lose. Agreed that Tish would be a good Congresswoman. Tish would be great at anything she chooses. Word has it that Tish has an elderly parent livig with her and would rather stay close to home. A judgeship perhaps?
Tish spent a lot of time in Albany working for Al Vann, Roger Green and Elliot Spitzer. Word has it that she got tired of the commute and welcomed the change that the council made in keeping her close to home so she could keep closer tabs on her elderly mother. If she got tired of the commute to Albany, I can't imagine her wanting to commute to Washington. I'll believe it when she announces. Whatever she decides, CM James would be an asset. Just for the record, this is from Jeffries Exploratory Committee: "Although only in the Assembly a short period, I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish:
· Sponsored a law that protects the privacy rights and civil liberties of innocent, law-abiding New Yorkers who were stopped, questioned or frisked by the NYPD, but found to have done nothing wrong.
· Passed legislation designed to transform vacant luxury apartments - that had failed as market-rate developments - into affordable homes for working and middle-class families.
· Advocated for education reform issues. A vocal critic of Cathie Black's appointment as public school chancellor, served as lead plaintiff in the lawsuit Jeffries v. Steiner that challenged the former chancellor's eligibility to receive a waiver given her lack of education credentials." Despite your obvious misgivings, Hakeem is just as qualified for Congress as Tish is. What's more, Hakeem has indicated by forming an exploratory commitee, that he's interested in the position. Tish has not. You are attempting a "Draft Tish" movement that she herself may not go for, for reasons that I've stated above. Also, Despite your also obvious leanings against Atlantic Yards, Hakeem never came out and fully endorsed the project, just illustrated what would have to happen for him to do so. His so-called "wavering" did not affect his candidacy in the district as his overwhelming defeat of DDDB candidate Billy Batson clearly indicated. I have spoken to DDDB members since Hakeem took office. Many of them, although opposed to him at first, approve of his performance in office now. Besides, I think many people in the district approve of Atlantic Yards. DDDB was just more vocal. In any case the Atlantic Yards scenario is going to happen and opposition is now effectively dead. Why bring it up now? The main horse here is Towns himself. He has a considerable war chest and has defeated several strong opponents: Charles Baron, Kevin Powell, Barry Ford and Roger Green; with the exception of Roger, not just once but several times. He also has a fiercely loyal constituent base in ENY and Brownsville. Despite your misgivings about him, Ed Towns delivers services. I believe he will have his seat, untill HE decides to give it up.
What then? I am not drafting James. As I said, I have repeatedly heard folk say she should run for Congress. What, the conversations should not take place? Because you said so? The opposition to Atlantic Yards is not dead. The arena is going up, but the folk behind the Unity project are still having meetings regarding what should happen with the rest of the development area. You should know that.
