Prediction: No GOP Nomination For Rudy Giuliani

In spite of current exploratory tours through parts of the country where he appears to be popular, Rudy Giuliani will never be the Republican Presidential candidate.

Why? The former Mayor has too many skeletons in his closet.

And particularly in view of the post-Congressman Foley fall-out, the Conservative and Evangelical wing of the Republican Party will be vetting candidates with rigid back-ground tests for flaws that could further undermine the Republican platform of Family Values. Going forward, Republican candidates for office will have to be squeaky-clean. And Rudy happens to be more Squeaky than Clean.

Rising to the surface like free-floating turds will be Rudy’s first marriage to his cousin, his extra-marital escapades and a variety of rumored infidelities at Gracie Mansion while married to ex-wife Donna Hanover. All of this will be Red Meat for Democrats and popular front-page stories if Rudy were to become the Republican choice.

The prostate issues that Rudy himself announced when he declined to run for the United States Senate against Hillary may have slowed down his Libido. But the memory of Monica Lewinsky in contact with Bill Clinton’s cigars will definitely make voters reluctant to put another studdish cigar-smoking President in the White House. Republican Party strategists themselves may soon find ways to release some of these stories in order to snuff Rudy’s candidacy before it gets any further.

In addition, Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. There is little doubt that the former Donna Giuliani was embarrassed by the allegations circulating about her Mayor husband privately entertaining female friends at Gracie Mansion. But what had to be been the most bitter humiliation was Rudy’s announcement to the Press of his intention to be divorced, ...apparently before he indicated his intentions to his spouse . That is the kind of cruelty that a woman is neither likely to ever forget or forgive. In fact, before 9/11 salvaged his reputation, the majority of New Yorkers and especially women were inclined to think of Rudy Giuliani as a shameless creep because of the vulgar and crude way in which he handled his failing marriage.

Donna Hanover, now happily re-married could already be drafting a book “My Life With The Rudy” or “ First His Second Cousin, Then Me” or how about “Rudy, The Pig.”. Released immediately after Rudy announces a presidential run, this book by the Mayor’s former wife would be at the top of the best-selling list immediately and would stay there for a while. Although the book might be a sensitive matter for her two children, Donna could reconcile the embarrassment to her children with the comfort of the mega-millions of dollars the book would certainly bring in.

Adding to Rudy’s problems, Bernie Kerik will rise again. Sooner or later. Kerik, Rudy’s police commissioner, closest confidante, and chauffeur already embarrassed Rudy and George Bush when secrets emerged about his contacts with Organized Crime. Recommended by Rudy, the attempt to install Bernie as Homeland Security Chief, turned out to be excruciatingly painful . Kerik’s wheeling and dealing with funds and equipment, as well as his private use of personnel while Corrections Commissioner will also get the full treatment if ever Rudy gets close to Nomination. This is a Pandora’s box that neither Rudy nor Kerik will want opened again. And of course, there’s the other “best-seller” that Bernie Kerik himself is sitting on. Title: ME, AND RUDY.

Another problem for Rudy will come when the extent of his current wealth is made public. It will be embarrassing to explain how the 9/11 catastrophe converted him within a few years from a disgraced Mayor who was worried about how he would pay alimony and child-support to an extremely wealthy, and increasingly wealthy multi-millionaire. The public, with the families of the victims furious, may be turned off by a candidate who got suddenly rich through the live cremation of hundreds of their loved ones. There may be, and certainly should be, a demand for Rudy to turn over a substantial portion of his fortune to these families.

Finally, in the history of New York City, Rudy Giuliani has probably been the Mayor most hated and despised among Blacks and Latino. Blacks and Latinos found Rudy to be more distasteful and obnoxious than Ed Koch. Worse than Ed Koch. And that says it all. In New York’s Black communities, Rudy Giuliani was hardly even a five per center.

At a time when the Republican Party seeks to attract more Black and Latino voters, Rudy Giuliani will emerge to be the Party's worse nightmare. The story of Giuliani’s offensive and provocative conduct towards Black and Latino New Yorkers has long been transmitted to Blacks and Latinos around the country. But there is no question that the Democratic Party will make sure that it is told over and over again. And Americans will be unwilling to have a President who provoked hostility abroad succeeded by a President who has a history of provoking division and hostility at home.

This is a well written, but completely obvious, analysis. Many others, including myself, have been making many of these same arguments for 5 years.

I usually add that Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire would never support him based on his politics alone (pro-choice, semi-pro gay), and the fact that he's from NYC, let alone all the skeletons mentioned. Also missing are the facts that he went to live with a gay couple when Donna kicked him out of Gracie Mantion and that he dressed up in drag on SNL.

The counter punch

Put me down as someone who thinks Rudy still has a lot of juice.

He is very close to Clinton in the actual American political spectrum, economically conservative, socially liberal. Believe it or not there are lots of those people in Iowa, maybe not as many as there are bible-pounding, snake-handling Protestants but who is doing the vote counting? None of those Christians stuck with Jimmy Carter the minute the price of gas rose and he was an actual believer instead of the fake cowboys that replaced him.

His negatives will be his Catholic, ethnic background rather than his moral failings that, as with Falwell and Swaggart, can easily be "forgiven" with a little Baptism or Holy Water.

The bankers, and there are still some in the Republican Party, prefer power to all things. He will assure them.

Also, he is high on the name recognition spectrum. There is no such thing as bad publicity.

The Republicans prefer power to morality, that is clear and Giuliani can hurt the Democrats in their home turf, maybe even taking NY. His candidacy makes an interesting triangle. Who do the Democrats run, a Southern anti-abortion Christian? The South would remain solid Republican, a couple might slip away, but Giuli could do real damage in NY, Penn, Ohio, Illinois, the industrial midwest. Lose even a couple of those and you'd be calling Rudy, Prez.

No NYer will get the nod in '08

Hey everybody - I hate to tell you this, but NO ONE from NY will be at the top of the ticket in '08. Not even Hillary. They will all go down in flames. Hillary at the top will take the Dems off a cliff. I know people in NY don't want to believe it, but either Hillary or Rudy will cause their party to lose in '08. Southern Dems do not like Hillary Clinton - my family is full of them and they would vote for any Dem. Except Hillary. And that includes [actually, is ESPECIALLY the case] for the many Southern Democratic women in my family.

That said, I am a Republican and have zero interest in seeing Rudy at the top of the ticket. Best he could do is #2 VP to McCain's #1 - which is exactly what I have been saying since 2004, and I stand by that assessment. They are VERY close and Rudy's running for prez is a smokescreen for that to be the actual outcome. Anyone who saw them together during the convention or at any point since then will see that that situation is completely obvious...
