NY State Senate: Challenging Martin Golden

Since my post on CBID endorsements got SO much attention, I thought it a good idea to post some of the challenges to incumbents I am supporting this year. Many were chastizing me for being too focused on incumbents. Happens that CBID was mostly endorsing incumbents I consider good folks and have no qualms about supporting. But I certainly do support challenges to incumbents, both in primaries and in the general election, in some cases. I want to start with a challenge to obstructionist Republican Marty Golden in Brooklyn.

For years the corrupt Brooklyn political machine has protected Republican Marty Golden from serious challenge. It has been, in fact, one of my ongoing criticisms of Brooklyn Democratic Party leader Vito Lopez: he fails in his job of leading the Democratic Party in challenges against Republicans. Well this year Lopez's active discouragement of Democrats challenging Republicans has failed and Democrat Mike DiSanto has announced he is challenging Republican Marty Golden for the 22nd State Senate Seat in Brooklyn. There is another Democrat in the race, Claudio DeMeo, but I haven't seen his campaign pick up as much steam as DiSanto's. Here is Mike DiSanto's statement annoucing his candidacy:

Although you may have already heard, I want to personally announce my candidacy to you for New York State Senator, representing the 22nd District.

For those of you who know me well, you know that a political career has never been a dream or aspiration of mine.  So I did not make the decision to run for the Senate lightly.

I have spent my entire life in South Brooklyn.  I attended PS 97 elementary school, Mark Twain Junior High School, and Midwood High School.  After graduating from Baruch College and working in the marketing industry for various companies including Coca-Cola, I returned to school last year to study at New York University. I'm the product of a loving working class family, a public education, and a supportive community. The people of South Brooklyn have given me so much. And it's time for me to give back.

I know the current recession has had devastating effects on everyone. But I see my community - my family - under increasingly more pressure every day.  Over the past few years, I've watched vibrant neighborhoods deteriorate and small businesses close.

I've sat with friends who have lost their jobs. I've waited 20 minutes for a train, and I've walked over two miles to catch a bus. I've paid higher taxes, but continue to feel the effects of "budget cuts." I've listened to parents scared for their children's education, and worse, I've talked with parents scared for their children's safety. I've had enough. We deserve more.

The government must offer protection for more than the chosen few. Benefits and breaks are not just for the wealthy and the well-connected. We have to take care of those who have taken care of us, which is why I plan to make our seniors and veterans top priorities.

The possibilities are there, but our voices have not been heard. I have new energy and new ideas, but most importantly, I have integrity. I won't be bought, sold or borrowed, and I won't be afraid to go against the grain.  My sole allegiance is to you - my friends, my family, and my neighbors - and that is something I will never lose sight of. I know where I came from, and I'm proud of it. Now it's my turn to give back.

This campaign is about improving our lives and creating security for our children and our parents. I know the road ahead will not be easy, but I couldn't be more optimistic.I look forward to speaking with you in the coming days to talk about these crucial issues and how you may be able to help our campaign.

I'm excited for this opportunity, and I want to thank each of you for your support.

Best,

Mike DiSanto

DiSanto has some choice words about the decline of South Brooklyn when he spoke to the American Heritage Democratic Club in Bay Ridge:

"Since the 1980s I have seen the gradual decline of our neighborhoods, when they should have been consistently improving,” said DiSanto.  “I was able to get a decent public school education and we had art and afterschool programs. Today teachers do not even get paper for their students. The children need to be the top priority. Education is more important now than it has ever been due to the new dynamic global economy.”

DiSanto also stressed the need for communities to get necessary funding for infrastructure improvements and residents need tax breaks to make repairs on their aging homes in this economy, saying “I believe this will increase home values and create jobs.”

DiSanto blasted developers for knocking down houses and putting up poorly built condos.  He said that those developers were destroying residential neighborhoods and the ambience that used to go along with living in south Brooklyn.  He called for better programs for first time home buyers and guidelines for development that does not jeopardize the uniqueness of our neighborhoods.

“Kids I grew up with, who want to buy houses here to raise their families cannot afford to let this happen, said DiSanto.  “This is destroying our residential neighborhoods.”

He also touted green initiatives to beautify neighborhoods, improve air quality and bring “green jobs” to Brooklyn. The borough has the second least amount of park space per person of all the five boroughs and therefore should be at the top of the list when it comes to funding for green initiatives.

DiSanto also stressed the need for more community events across all of the neighborhoods in his district including concerts and festivals to restore the sense of community allowing residents and their families increased opportunities for recreation and socialization. He stated that these events will also benefit small business owners who have suffered through the economic slowdown.

DiSanto slammed the MTA and leadership for cutting transportation services in Brooklyn while building two new subway lines in Manhattan.

“It is obvious where the loyalty lies,” said DiSanto.  “We are not second class citizens because we do not live in Manhattan...”

DiSanto is running for the State Senate seat currently held by Republican Marty Golden, which include parts of Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay and Marine Park.

It seems that his speeches to the American Heritage Democratic Club paid off since, despite widespread expectations that they would endorse DeMeo, they endorsed DiSanto in the end. DiSanto has also picked up the endorsements of Brooklyn Democrats for Change, Lambda Independent Democrats and the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club. From Brooklyn Democrats for Change:

Brooklyn deserves someone with new ideas, innovative thinking, honor and a background in achieving solid results. I am that person,” DiSanto told the club. “Legislators have created a system that has denied Southern Brooklyn the funding it needs and deserves. Government is a service to the people -- to make peoples’ lives better. Tonight I am asking you to help send me to Albany. And when I get there, I will fight for you. I will fight to end corruption and waste, I will to ensure our district gets the funding it deserves and that our families are protected and have the services their tax dollars are paying for.”

Visit Mike DiSanto's website and help him defeat obstructionist Republican Marty Golden. Mike DiSanto will bring much needed new blood to the State Senate and electing him would be a major step in ending Albany dysfunction.

What about the two other candidates? My understanding is one of them is the leader of an anti-Catholic heavy metal group. Still, voters need to know why DiSanto, and not the others, is the best choice to beat Golden, if that is indeed the case.

DeMeo (who I do mention) has no actual website, though he does have a Facebook page. He has a page on ActBlue but you can't seem to actually donate through it. I have heard he is anti-choice, but not sure. He is a high school gym teacher. As far as I can tell, he has not been able to get any endorsements from what I can tell and you know he was expected to get American Heritage by many of us but didn't.

And yet DeMeo seems a better contender than the third guy, Justin Lee Brannan, who, as far as I can tell, hasn't actually announced yet. He is a "musician, philanthropist, and entrepeneur," which to me suggests amateur

Supposedly all three aren't bad. The Brooklyn Eagle quotes The Bay Ridge Interpol blog as calling all three “young, smart and fearless Democrats” who pose a serious challenge to Golden. Yet from what I have been able to glean, DiSanto is the only one actually running an effective campaign. Even his campaign seems a tad amateurish, but it also seems to be learning fast. The other two seem to have gone nowhere so far. DiSanto also claims to be the "only Pro-Choice and Pro-Equality candidate in this race" which makes him my choice over the others anyway, but I think an effective campaign is the more strategic reason he's the one to support. You can't beat an incumbent if you run a lousy campaign.

Brannan's apparently the head-banger with the anti-papist lyrics.

Would like to know more about DeMeo, as his CV seems a better fit for the district, but you are correct; DiSanto does seem the only one actually interested in running a real race, and that probably is game, set and match right there.

Here's his Act Blue page that doesn't seem functional other than offering his mission statement, as it were:

http://www.actblue.com/page/claudiodemeo

And for those more advanced than me, here's his facebook page, which doesn't, to me, seem to be a substitute for a decent website and an Act Blue Page that actually accepts contributions (both of which DiSanto has):

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Claudio-DeMeo-for-State-Senate/109556252406936

Let me say here that at the moment I see no reason why I wouldn't support DeMeo if he wins the primary, but DiSanto seems a better candidate.

I'd assume Brannan's anti-Pope lyrics, which I'd have to see them before I judged them, wouldn't play well in the district.

Hey Mole - why are you ignoring what the comments were all about ?

Brennan's chief of staff Keefe plead guilty  to a crime.

CBID is run by Brennan hack's - and you want to deflect this by writing about Marty Golden from Bay Ridge

Mole is not posting to deflect attention--the man puts posts up perpetually. The guy blogs about every single dinner he's ever consumed and about saving old European synagogues.

He's got a right to move onto whatever topic he wants, and if you got anything relevant to say, just say it in the proper place.

But if you don't want to comment about Marty Golden (and who could blame you?), then go back to your usual activities, like slashing people's tires and attacking them with hammers.

It was addressed elsewhere. 1.) Brennan was barely mentioned in the diary you refer to, so your emphasis on Brennan is already a deflection of my diary; 2.) the incident you refer to was a scuffle at a polling site...which I DID mention in that diary; 3.) CBID is NOT lockstep with Brennan as ANYONE who is involved with the club would know (unlike you who are merely making accusations without knowledge); and 4.) THIS diary has nothing to do with CBID or Brennan, so you are diary hijacking for no good reason.

If you are Gary/Bivono or whether you are O'Hara's long standing vendetta, I don't give a crap. You are doing nothing but alienating people who might well be sympathetic to you. Being a bottom feeder and sleaze monger in now way endears you to me.

First, to Truth Squad, I've known Mole for over 6 years and he is never one to skirt a subject.  Here was not a forum for Brennan so put your head on straight and read the forum when he did take on that subject.

I've met both DeSanto and DeMeo and of the 2 I liked DeSanto better.  DeMeo (who I met at United Democrats when I was there to let McMahon know how I felt about his healthcare vote) struck me as being too self centered and never answered directly any questions other than on education (which is a critical issue but his knowledge on other issues was very lacking).  DeSanto I met in January when he came to United Progressives annual Breakfast to introduce himself and let us know who he is and that he was running against Marty Golden.

I also have to say that any candidate that doesn't have a web site and is relying only on his Facebook page is not a candidate that I would be interested in voting for (note:  this is not my district) and with just a week and a half until petitioning starts DeMeo should get his act together and get a web site up and running.

As for Brannen, sorry to say I don't know anything about him.

Hey Mole-

One simple question. What reform has CBID accomplished during it's 40 year control of the legislature ?

Just name one !!

You ask:

Ummm...what legislature does CBID control??? Hell, CBID barely controls itself at times. I strongly suspect CBID is not what you think it is. Given CBID's penchant for endorsing protest candidtaes with no shot of winning, it is hard for me to imagine them "controlling" a legislature. That's like accusing Progressive Democrats of America of controlling  Congress. If anyone needs evidence that you have a tenuous grasp of reality, your belief that CBID controls "the" legislature is all they will need.

I have met all three candidates and felt Brannan was the best. He was articulate and charming. Reminded me of a young Churchill. He does have an interesting past which will probably help as much hurt him in the future - that said, I don't know where this "anti-pope" thing is coming from.  From what I know (read, gleaned online) he is an atheist not a satanist!  Anyhow, Brannan stated publicly that he is not running this year so don't go looking for his campaign website.  Quite frankly, the other two: DeMeo and DiSanto, were a little too wet behind the ears for my liking. Nevertheless, it is indeed good to see small "d" democracy clawing its way back in Brooklyn - especially in Marty Golden's district where we all know dirty back room deals have been made to protect his seat and dissuade, if not prevent and obstruct, challengers from steping forward. DeMeo has that very thick Bensonhurst accent and is a gym teacher at a local high school. DiSanto comes off as confident but when he is challenged on an issue, he's lost. Regardles, I'm glad the Dems are finally saying enough is enough and running candidates against Marty Golden who, quite frankly, has overstayed his welcome IMO.

I had never found any indication that Brannan had announced.

Velmannette, Connor, Ferris, Brennan, Millman, Owens and the Hacks go on and on and on.

When Mole is asked for one shred  of reform that came out of any of this, we get a glib remark.

Gee whiz - nobody's in control.

Meaning - nobody does anything !!

Don't knock CBID.

When I got elected to the Assembly I was a substitute schoolteacher sleeping on my brothers couch.

Ten years later in 1984 I left, and haven't had to work a day since.

This reform stuff pays !!

Funny how you lump everyone together even those who are opposed to eachother quite vehemently. Further evidence of your delusions.

The reform movement in Brooklyn has a sad record thanks to the very divisions that the likes of Biviano/Tilzer and O'Hara thrive on. CBID fights IND. Factions within CBID fight. So many reform candidates run that the machine divides and conquers. Then Tilzer and O"Hara folks rant about how everyone but them is the machine dispite all evidence to the contrary.

So what is YOUR solution? Supporting candidates who get what, like 7% of the vote?

Don't know much about O'Hara and his vendetta. So I won't comment. But Tilzer SHOULD know full well that several of his chosen candidates got elected THANKS TO HELP from myself and CBID. Possibly they wouldn't have needed it, but think about the Surrogate seats. Who was on Tilzer's side? The very people he now attacks as being part of the machine. I did a lot of advocacy for your candidate and convinced quite a few voters. So did CBID. Is your memory really that defective Gary? Is your real beef with the CBID crowd that they don't hire you? Is that it?

Your claim that CBID ran the legislature was so absurd to be delusional. Blaming the one organization that seriously tries to change things gets you no where. Which is where you have been stuck since that Surrogate race I mentioned. Biviano is nowhere and thanks to your influence he is likely to stay there.

O'Hara was never a reformer. He was the creation of regulars Tony Carraciolo and Bob Muir. The one time he came close to winning he was the candidate of the District Leader who was Clarence Norman's winning vote for County Leader.

Moreover, he's always been a crypto-Republican.

His folks are probably flaming you to take the attention off their bar buddy, Golden.
