Support Mark Green for NYC Public Advocate Sept. 29

Here is a sampling of people who have endorsed Mark Green for Public Advocate of NYC with statements:

Bobby Kennedy
Environmental Law Attorney

"My Uncle Teddy finally felt that, after the death of his brothers, the election of Barack Obama was the fulfillment of his life. That he had fought.  That America had ultimately come around.  And there is one other guy who has been there that long, with him, and that's Mark Green.

The post that he running for is the conscience of the City.  It is the post that is supposed to remind all of us how democracy is supposed to function,  how the little guy should have as much power as the big powerful wealthy voices. There is nobody who understands it better than Mark. "

Gloria Steinem
Feminist Icon and Activist

“Mark Green’s record of real progressive reform and his successful fights for women in particular – helping domestic violence victims in the workplace, changing divorce laws, stopping discriminatory pricing based on gender – show the kind of outspoken Public Advocate he was and should be again.”

National Organization for Women – New York City Chapter

"NOW-NYC is proud to endorse Mark Green, who clearly stands out as the candidate with the most skills, accomplishments and vision.  New York City needs a Public Advocate who understands the struggles women in our city face on a daily basis. Mark Green is that person.”

City Council Member Lewis A. Fidler
Democrat of South Brooklyn
Youth Services Committee Chair

"Mark is strong not only in one borough but in all the boroughs because of his history representing the whole City as the widely admired Public Advocate.  He'll do especially well in Brooklyn both because he originated here and because his advocacy for our pocketbooks and our health is second to none."

National Latino Officers Association

"We've know Mark well for years and know his record on security and policing issues," said Miranda. "His courage in taking on Mayor Giuliani over the urgent issue of police misconduct and racial profiling is a perfect example of the type of leadership Mark has provided this City. His lawsuits and investigations led to better discipline and better police-community relations, which is essential to successful law enforcement."

"Especially during difficult times for our City, Mark's unequaled experience as Public Advocate is just what struggling families need to get effective city services and just the kind of watchdog a mayor must have."

Local 2507: Uniformed EMTs, Paramedics, and Fire Inspectors FDNY &
Local 3621: Uniformed EMS Officers Union

"There was a traumatic and tragic event eight years ago this week that deeply affected our City, our emergency medical service personnel members and Mark Green.  He was running in a mayoral primary September 11 and our members recall his courage and grace that day and the difficult days that followed.  He showed a real knowledge of what the City was going through and a real empathy about what our members were going through.”

"Like so many New Yorkers, Mark's a fighter and a survivor who doesn't quit when the chips are down.  So we're endorsing him now because of his years of proven accomplishment and potential to do even more.”

"Our jobs involve the health of New Yorkers under stress.  Mark in his way has been a champion of consumer health issues his entire public life.  Look at how he exposed how HMOs were violating the state's HMO Bill of Rights by shunning patients when they needed care, how he exposed how major hospitals were ignoring the ‘Libby Zion Law’ to avoid overworking doctors and interns, how hospitals weren't disclosing adverse incident reports.”

504 Democratic Club (disabled rights group)

"We don't have to guess what Mark will do for our community because we saw what he did do -- especially his federal petition that forced Access-a-Ride to reduce its automatic 'denial rate' in picking up the frail elderly and disabled. Mark's an aggressive progressive who's always on our side."

And I can't help adding someone I liked from my days in California:

Congressman Henry Waxman
Democrat of California
Energy and Commerce Committee Chair

“I don't usually endorse local candidates but Mark Green is not a usual local candidate. He's been one of the leading consumer advocates and health care advocates in the country over the past 30 years in his public office, his books, his public interest law work. For example, Mark's early leadership on tobacco and kids helped result in our 2009 Tobacco Safety Act that President Obama just signed in the Rose Garden.

He was also an outspoken voice investigating health care in New York City, like his Consumer Guide to Hospitals, crackdown on HMOs and lawsuit forcing New York State to disclose adverse incidence reports per hospital.

Mark was a widely praised Public Advocate and would be again if returned to that office. For he has a combination essential in any great public servant -- progressive values and incredible persistence.”

Other endorsements include:

American Heritage Democratic Club

Barack Obama Democratic Club of East Harlem

Democratic Organization of Richmond County

East Harlem/El Barrio Democratic Club

Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club

Sojourner Truth Democratic Club

Tioga/Carver Democratic Club

I couldn't help but think that he is being endorsed by his generation. Whereas I think that it is those who came after who really need an advocate, and don't have one.

I wouldn't say it is a reason to vote for or against him, but it does seem like he is old school and appealing more to his generation. Of course I am younger, but maybe I am a fuddy duddy at heart...

The previous commenters are missing the big news in this post....Mole has posted a quote from the likes of ME in support of his position. Now folks, that is a major Kumbaya moment!

Thank you Mole!

BTW, on a very serious note, saying that Mark Green is appealing only to yesterday's generation is an unfair cheap shot...as unfair as deBlasio saying that we should only look at someone's record over the past 8 years. Mark Green has a life long record of hard nosed advocacy for the people who need it the most. Never afraid to to work for an unpopular cause if he feels it is just.

And reemember, this is the man who wrote a book being used in the Obama White House for ideas for America's future...so he is hardly old news.

Also, on the subject of laugh out loud funny: deBlasio on NY1 last night saying that Mark is notorious for going negative. Am I the only New Yorker who got three separate mailings form deBlasio attacking Mark Green? I got NO mailings from Green knocking anyione. And I think it was in the FIRST PA debate when deBlasio opened up by taking a question on a totally different subject and attacking Green's brother.

Kinda hypocritical of Mr. DeBlasio, doncha think? Not the first flip flop of his career either....did anyone here hear the one about Bill and term limits?????

..where Lew and Mole meet for a beer?

Submitted by mole333 on Thu, 09/17/2009 - 7:22pm.

You know I like you despite our differences. I do think the observation of appealing to a past generation, though perhaps a cheap shot, is also a warning to Green's campaign. If they can't appeal to the younger crowd, his chances are lower...though we all should keep in mind that older generations are more reliable voters. I don't know if the observation regarding the endorsements is a fair measure of appeal to younger voters, but it would be worth Green's attention to notice this possible issue.

Then again, Green could use some of his Air America connections to reach younger voters?

As to de Blasio going negative, yeah, I found his mailings pretty negative. Though let's also admit Green can be abrasive as well. But de Blasio has no high ground these days.

People once looked to their elders to guide their future. Now you worry they will cash it in, though not necessarily the endorsers mentioned. And there is this: people get locked into the issues of their past.

Let me give you an example. When I got fed up and and ran my protest campaign in 2004, I was trying to call attention to the deals and non-decisions that would diminish our future today, and in 2020. While handing out leaflets in the subway, a main of Mark Green's generation asked who I would vote for for President. I said I would never vote for Bush on generational equity grounds (given the debts, etc), but had not decided whether I would vote for Kerry.

A woman the same age was passing. And suddenly the two started screaming at each other about Vietnam, and I and everything I was trying to point out, as far as they were concerned, disappeared. Warmonger! Traitor!

But yeah I got DeBlasio's slimeball, and threw it on the pile with the rest of the political trash.

Submitted by mole333 on Thu, 09/17/2009 - 9:23pm.

You and I are generally on very different pages and I often have strong disagreements with your views. But this time I see what you are saying and think Green's campaign needs to consider it. Oddly, though I am more de Blasio's generation, I think I find myself closer to either Green's generation OR the generation after de Blasio's. There has always been something particularly self-centered and greedy about de Blasio's generation compared with previous generations (and maybe later generations??) and de Blasio is typical of that self-centered greed that I found so objectionable as I grew to political maturity within the same generation, more or less. Yassky  is another example of this. The amorality of the de Blasio's and Yassky's doesn't do it for me compared with the solidity of (to pick a clearer example than Green) Norm Siegel. Now how far that generational difference goes, and whether the current political generation (which probably votes even less reliably than de Blasio's generation) is more like Green and Steinem's or more like de Blasio and Yassky's is not clear to me. But it may be real and your obeservation should not be ignored.

Forgot to respond to the beer option. Would love to have a beer with Lew. Problem is my time, including drinking time outside of my department's beer hour, is increasingly limited...and I suspect Lew's is even more so. But if Lew has a free evening when I am not having to pick up my son and fixing dinner for the family, I'm there. Hell if Vito Lopez were free for a beer, I'd be there...as long as he was paying.

I actually agree with your comments reponding to my first post.

Though i would hope that RFK Jr appeals to younger voters.

I sense that for the Green campaign in this area, the problem is not the message, it is the medium.

As to getting together, it would be easier if I actually knew who you were. Don't know where you work but if you are a downtown Bklyn guy, maybe we could grab a Starbucks in the morning or an O'Keefe burger for lunch someday.

Perhaps the Gatemouth Family, Mole Family and Lew Families could grab a bite? Always mean ot get together with Gatemouth again (he even promised to introduce us to a Yemenite place better than Yemen Cafe) and my wife and I recently discovered a good Uygur restaurant in Brighton Beach.

My take on the generations is as follows:

The "silent" generation that came of age in the 1950s, and the first half of the baby boom that came of age in the 1960s, were (for the majority) the best off in American history. The latter was the most out front idealistic, based on its loudest members, but it was also the most likely to vote Republican in 1994 (based on age group exit polls at the time). Policies enacted while these generations were in power have tended to take benefits in the present and sell out the future.

Hence by designation as Generation Greed a group some of whose members thought the were in Generation Idealism. The idealists might still have a chance to pull our fat out of the fire, but that's not the way things are going.

My generation is the back end of the baby boom, which entered the workforce after wages peaked in 1973, the payroll tax was raised and income taxes cut in the early 1980s, and the Social Security retirement age was raised. It's members have been worse off (on average) by every measure than those who came before, at every age, although they avoided Vietnam and convulsions of the 1960s, which is worth a lot.

I agree that most in my generation are cynical about institutions, apathetic, and absorbed by their own concerns. Some work the system, some just assumed they will be ripped off by it and worry about themselves. They'll find out how that will work out post institutional collapse. Generation Apathy.

Then you have the "slackers" of Gen X, who graduated into a better economy but have otherwise been no better off or worse off than my generation. And, of course, they were children after for more than half of them the American family fell apart.

Ah well, I guess we can hope for a rebuilding by Gen Y after existing institutions collapse. Is it my perspective as a stagflation baby that makes me say so, or the data? All I can say to them is never trust anyone who was more than five years old when someone said never trust anyone over 30.

Someone needs to take the generational equity issue seriously. Why doesn't someone say it was unjust for NYC teachers to get a deal for a pension at 55 instead of 62 when most have nothing but Social Security at age 67 or perhaps later? And that it is a further injustice for the cost of this to be shifted to future teachers in the form of lower wages and benefits. NO ONE dares to object.

Joy is as much a political beast as I am, or almost anyway. In fact, most of my harshest comments about politicians are quotes from Joy. And even my son has more than a passing interest in politics. He likes John Liu, Gifford Miller made him cry and he yelled "Cat Nuts" (his way of saying Cashew nuts at the time) at Mark Green. He also did about as much to get Devin Cohen elected as anyone else.

My time really is either at work or with family, so social and political events usually are family affairs. However, I could try to get special dispensation for an evening out one of these days.

de Balsio has the high ground.

In fact, term limits, as orignially constructed, would force openings for younger generations to enter public office. Fossilized remnants don't always know when to step down.

Niccolo and Anonymous...ignoring the fact that Bill de Blasio is involved in several major scandals. Sure, he may well win. New Yorkers seem to love their corrupt politicians. But to cheer the victory of a blatantly corrupt politician and to even say he has the high ground sounds positively Republican in its acceptance of corruption. But that has always been my big complaint about NYC politics. You guys may aspire to be as tolerant as Republicans towards corruption, but I do not.

But you choose to highlight the fact I am a Jew? Wow. Room 8 seems to be attracting a particularly nasty bunch of pests these days. Do you have any connection with THESE Dickheads? Does the de Blasio campaign know you are using anti-Semitism in your advocacy of his campaign? I bet he wouldn't like it.
