FYI on the MTA Vote

This email was just forwarded to me:

Yesterday the MTA voted to enact a massive fare hike and deep cuts in service on subways and buses throughout our community.

I am writing to you today to let you know that I am fighting to ensure that the MTA's vote does not stand.

A few weeks ago I wrote to tell you about my plan to save the MTA and prevent these fare hikes and service cuts from going into effect.  My plan was based on the idea that all New Yorkers benefit from a mass transit system that brings workers, tourists, students and shoppers into our neighborhoods every day and therefore we all have a stake in rescuing the MTA.

In addition to asking employers to invest in the system through a regional mobility tax, my plan asks people who ride the buses and subways and people who drive cars over the bridges to pay an equal share.

The Assembly is prepared to pass this plan and prevent these massive fare hikes and service cuts from going into effect.

Unfortunately up to this point our colleagues in the State Senate have been unwilling to support it nor offer a workable alternative.

I hope that yesterday's vote by the MTA board will underscore to everyone in Albany that this crisis is real and that the failure to act would be an unmitigated disaster for millions of New Yorkers.
I will continue to press for an agreement that will reverse the MTA's decision and protect riders.  As always I will keep you informed of our progress.
Thanks.

If I show up with a gun every year and take $1,000 from you, would I be considered a hero if one year I came up and said I had a plan to give you $100 that you'd have to pay for yourself, but someone else wouldn't let me?

Tell Silver to make the $30 billion debt and unfunded retiree health care and pension obligations disappear. He is a leading light of Generation Greed, planning to leave nothing but ruins behind when he and his are gone.
