Vito’s Bad Days Go Unreported

By reading the political blogs and newspapers you would never know that Brooklyn Democratic County Leader Vito Lopez lost most of the important contested contests over the past few years.

This year Lopez backed Senator Martin Connors and lost.  More importantly his power block of voters in Williamsburg is clearly split, with the new Satmar faction headed by Rabbi Glanz/UJCARE, followers of Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum winning over a third of the vote for Squadron. Connor received 90.86 percent of the Chassidic vote when he ran against Diamondstone two years ago, but only 64.83 percent to Squadron's 35.17 percent on Tuesday.  Vito and his Williamsburg faction of Rabbi Niederman/UJO, followers of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum, no longer have the field all to themselves.   A bigger problem for Lopez with Connor’s defeat was that Squadron is a Schumer backed candidate.  Our senator has a long memory; part of that remembrance is Lopez heading up Democrats for D'Amato.  Will the emerging Schumer machine defeat Vito’s smoke and mirrors operation?

The county leader also lost the only contested judicial race in Brooklyn.  Devin Cohen besides having a tax problem beat Vito’s candidate Roger Adler.  Lopez also lost in the 40AD where Inez Barron beat his candidate Earl Williams easy.

In the boroughs other contested races, Lopez were busy playing all the candidates in their private discussions that- I am really with you game. Vito endorsed State Senator Parker the winner, but also was involved in both of his opponent’s campaigns.  Councilman Stewart told election lawyer Mitch Alter that he would have problems with Vito if he hired him or consultant Gary Tilzer.  If you look at the over half million dollars his other opponent Felder spent you would see that most of them consisted of a lot of Vito supporters and contributors.  Since Vito supported Republicans in the past (D’Amato, Pataki and Giuliani) many in Brooklyn felt he was involved with the effort against Malcolm Smith to split the black vote in the 21st Senate District to elect Felder and to keep Republican control of the State Senate.

Even with the re-election of Parker and Silver there are signs in the few competitive judicial races that occurred, that voters are much more willing to vote against the machine.  Despite the public growing signs of disgust with their dysfunctional government, the growing crime wave among their elected offices and most importantly the dismal won/loss record of county leaders, 2009 citywide candidates seem more and more willing to listen to the dictates of the county leaders in efforts to get their support.  Perhaps that says more about their governing abilities and intelligence then they think.

The 2007 victory of now Surrogate Court Judge Johnson against Vito’s machine, he only beat her by less than 100 votes in his home district (53AD) is all but forgotten.  So was Surrogate Court Judge Lopez Torres victory against the Brooklyn machine in 2005 in what can only be described as a collective mental block by the 2009 mayoral, controller, public advocate candidates and even the media.  There has never been an analysis by any of the press of how independent coalitions were put together to block the machine for the first time in 100 years from the Brooklyn Surrogate’s Court.   It is time for the media to understand that independent candidates and consultants give the voters a real voice against the thugs in this town who control campaigns, elective and party office.

And it does not help that the line between the reform clubs in Brooklyn and Vito judicial picks becomes increasingly more blearily, as the clubs endorsed more and more of his judicial candidates, ignoring the fact that while they might be good candidates it is the political system of control which causes the corruption and lack of reform.

Perhaps Lopez should learn a lesson in control from the Queens Democratic leaders, who buy off their endorsed candidates opponents before the voters have a chance to go to the polls.  Both Senator Sabini and Assemblymen Lafayette got new jobs to make way for this year’s parties endorsed candidates.  After petitioning and getting on the ballot, Baldeo who decided not to campaign in this year primaries for a Senate seat, for which he received 49% of the vote two years ago, had been in talks all summer with the leaders of the Queens machine.

Vito is not the only county leader who had a bad day on Tuesday.  In the opening battle of the racial charged Bronx Civil War the Rainbow Revels defend the party organization and Chairman Jose Rivera attacked on Assemblymen Heastie, Ruben Diaz Jr. and Michael Benjamin by party-supported candidates. In addition, the Civil Court candidate the revels backed, Liz Taylor, had a big win (54 percent) against her challengers, Maria Matos (the party candidate) and Verena Powell.   In Manhattan the county organization lost all three of their contested judicial races.

Reform should be about about voting for the best candidates substantively and for transparency of process. Voting for unqualified candidates just because the machine supported a qualified candidate seems to defeat purpose one and does nothing to bring transparency to the process. More, clearer thinking is needed on this important topic

Adler lost the race himself. He relied on a completely lit centered campaign. As far as I can tell, Lopez had nothing to do with this campaign. There were none of his volunteers on the streets, and none of his presence.

If I had to guess, the above posting is probably from Tilzer or Alter, two guys who are basically Brooklyn's bottom feeders.

I did a brief search and found this on the NY Daily News blog where it actually verifies that the above poster "oneshirt" is Gary Tilzer.

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2007/01/born-again.html

The idea that Gary Tilzer would blog about himself in the third person is kind of pathetic, and just goes to show how desperate people like him really are.

Good going champ.

I think the above poster needs to give credit where it is due. Squadron raised about $500,000, and immense sum for a State Senate race, and he worked very hard to get out the vote.

The district in question, is made up of parts of Brownstone Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill), Downtown Manahattan, and the parts of Williamsburg mentioned above. If blame is to be placed on the feet of anyone other than Connor, it should be placed at the feet of political leaders in those areas, not with Lopez, since Connor handidly won among the Hasidic community.

I am still waiting for Vito volunteers on the street to pull out the vote for Judge ShawnDya Simpson in his home district.  While we are on the topic of Volunteers, you know and I know how much money in member items and other government money Vito has entangled in his political operation.

It seems he is into untalented and inexperienced youngsters who while on his payroll troll the internet protecting their boss as best as they can.

Are you calling Judge Lopez Torres, Graham, Johnson, Fucks and many others BOTTOM FEEDER JUDGES.  Why not call Congressman Owens, Assemblywoman Jacobs and the late Lena Cymbrowitz BOTTOM FEEDERS

Tell Vito to get someone else to defend him, you not doing the job.

Which begs the Question: Judge Fucks who?

I don't think anyone thinks Gary's clients are all bottom feeders, although some are, including matching money Ponzi man Avraham Wasserman, and Jimmy Meng. On the other hand, Gary has provided his services to some fine people, although rarely have they retained him twice.

What is not at question is that Gary is a bottom feeder. And he has the bottom to prove it.

Which still makes him better than Mitch, who only represents bottom feeders.

Not really denying that its you, are you Gary?

Like I said, nice job. I wonder if you speak about yourself in the third person at lunch, or at the bank.

Gary Tilzer no like nasty internet! Me no like!

not sure who this gary fellow is but i think we all can agree that vito was quite the loser on primary night. goes to show you how much his endorsement means in this town. brooklyn may be coming back, but the power is definitely not w/ the county leader. I think marty markowitz would do the job justice :-)

I notice no one is really questioning the substance of this person's statements, merely attacking him personally. I happen to disagree with some of the details here, but it strikes me as basically acurate. If the best Vito apologists can do is attack the guy telling them they're losing their grip and deserve to lose their grip, then his downfall may be closer than I thought.

If this is Gary Tilzer, perhaps Vito apologists dislike him so much because he helped orchestrate Vito's complete loss of control over the Surrogate Court seats. I suspect those are the two biggest blows so far to Vito's grip and Gary was in on it. So I figure some of that venom is merely anger at being beaten.

And yes...Vito was, from several reports I heard, backing Adler...but only behind the scenes. County certainly bound Adler's petitions. But there was more to Vito's support than that. And the the Vito Lopez/Michael Tobman sleaze team who failed with Adler has plans for some future collaborations I hear from several sources.

One Vito failure that is also being ignored (including by Gary and including myself in a recet blog post) was how quickly Vito was told to forget about his buddy Recchia getting a shot at Congress. Vito and Recchia got shoved aside so quickly once Fossella imploded it must have left them dizzy. That is not how people treat party bosses who are at the peak of their power. That is how people treat people who are approaching has been status.

Any of these losses alone would be hardly a dent in Vito's power. But add them up and it really does not look good for the current machine.

Vito beat your guy Harrison 57/43 in Harrison's Brooklyn base.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Vito did nothing. His candidate was rudely shoved aside and McMahon was put up by Staten Island Democrats. Vito had little or nothing to do with it. And if he is taking credit, well that just shows how desperate he is to cling to some image of winning.

Vito went all out for McMahon in Brooklyn.

Do you think McMahon got those votes on his own against a Brooklyner?

Too bad Vito has never gone all out trying to actually defeat a Republican. But that shouldn't surprise anyone.

Vito must really be on the rocks. He is desperately trying to hitch his star to the success of another Borough's chosen candidate. Come on. Be honest (if you can). Lopez was unceremoniously shoved aside in that race. Recchia was furious that Lopez gave up so easily. No one cared what  Vito Lopez thought so he had no choice but accept the choice of McMahon.

As to him going all out for McMahon, I doubt it. I am sure he put in his typical token effort, but he has never gone all out unless it directly propped up his own control and McMahon is not his boy.

Vito never supported Steve Harrison and was behind McMahon (and would have backed Recchia) from the beginning.  Evidence is in initial backings once McMahon announced he was no longer afraid to run for the seat once Fossella exploded.  Just about the entire New York Congressional delegation backed McMahon and you don't do that without approval of your party leader.

More evidence that Vito would never back Harrison, he'd rather burn in oil that help a friend of Ralph Profetto.

would anyone expect a county leader with 25% of a district to control the nomination when the other 75% have a different candidate?

Only an asshole would think that it would be a sign of weakness, rathe rthan inteleligence, for the guy with the smaller portion to fold

Evidence that Lopez didn't want to help Harrison goes back to 2006.  Harrison didn't get the nomination until around March 2006 and didn't start taking donations until around May 2006.  Instead of all elected officials in Brooklyn and SI getting behind him and helping him raise money for the race (remember there was no Primary in 2006) they did just about nothing.  Some did give him donations but if they really wanted to win the race why didn't they give him their "A" lists of contributors?  How many of them hosted parties for him?  I'm not aware of any of them doing this. Keep in mind, Fossella was having problems then too.  Ethnics, finded by the House for using a photo illegally, rumor of a "friend" in DC and 2 members of his staff having their own legal problems, a voting record that stunk and the Spitzer bounce would have helped Steve.  Instead there was a rumor floating that I heard that Lopez wouldn't help Harrison because Fossella promised that a certain seat would not be challenged by a Republican.

Go forward to 2007/2008, Harrison announced he would run in August 2007 and stated raising money as soon as he was able to.  All of a sudden Dominic Recchia announces that "he's looking to run also."  Of course Recchia needed a job with 2009 fast approaching and he being term limited.  McMahon had decided to run for BP and was too scared to run against Vito.  Recchia run was to give him a position that he saw easier attaining than the one he really wanted which was Brooklyn BP (besides, DeBlasio is better known in the borough and the field for this job was getting very crowded).  Recchia starts raising money for a potential run in December 2007 and quickly surpasses Harrison but never formally announces he would run.  Recchia had problems of his own.  His wife was assaulted (thank God she was okay) and one of his daughters had a medical problem. On a polician side, the man cannot debate and didn't know anything about the issues on Staten Island.  He immediately lost 2 club endorsements and a 3rd didn't look too promising.  At that point it came out that he paid his wife $6,000 to rent a room in their own house to run his 2005 campaign from.  He still continued to raise money although he never formally announced that he would run.  May 1st, Vito explodes and 2 weeks later announces that he would not seek re-election.  All of a sudden Recchia's brokering between McMahon and Cusick and Harrison is being treated like a non-entity.  You think Lopez didn't confer with John Gulino (SI Democratic Leader) on this?  Now you also have names such as Peter Abbate, an Assemblyman who lives in the district but if you ask anyone outside of his district who he 99.9% of them wouldn't know seeking to run.  All of a sudden contributions that Harrison made to Marty Golden (when they were in the midst of a zoning fight in CD-10) which were never mentioned in 2006 are being found.  Gentile and Savino are also mentioned as possible Dem candidates but that was never going to happen.  Think again if you want to believe Lopez wasn't behind this.  When McMahon announces he would run and gets the nod from the SICC without being vetted don't think for one minute that Lopez didn't have a hand in this (even if it was just giving Gulino guidance).  When just about the entire NYC Democratic Congressional Members back McMahon and all of a sudden the DCCC gets in on this and also backs McMahon even though there was going to be a Primary don't for a minute think Lopez didn't have a hand in this.

Lopez is losing his grip but it's slow and will take time.  I expect that within about 2 years there may be an outright challenge to his leadership (if he doesn't go the Clarence Norman route) and I can't wait.  You know the saying "what goes around, comes around."
