Robert Hornak, Republican IdeologueI'm a local Republican activist who has been involved in city politics for over 12 years. I also professionally advise Republican candidates running for office in the downstate area. I've been active in the NY Young Republican Club, an independent YR club that has been working to build the NY GOP on real Republican ideals and principles. I am far more of an ideologue than a partisan, and rarely hesitate to criticize bad politicians or bad policies, regardless of which party they come from. A Simple Dream of an Activiist at Heart
Having moved to NYC seven years ago from Minnesota, I now consider myself a New Yorker. I have always been one at heart; in fact, when I was preparing to move here, I would watch live Web cams of pedestrians on the streets of Broadway. My friends told me I had already moved here in my head.
I am by nature an enthusiastic guy. Politics is a practical outflow for my beliefs and energy. My love for the city has only grown, and i realize there is a lot of work to do here. But by nature, my enthusiasm often produces bursts of action followed by sudden boredom. I'm learning that I need others to work with and depend on in order to contribute what I'm capable of. For this reason, I have always admired the long, steady, hard work of Robert Hornak, and others who spend years, week in and week out, working for the cause of liberty. I'm very proud of Robert and others like him. If I used a tenth of the time I spend ruminating, working on practical action, who knows what I could accomplish. At heart, I truly am an activist. I have a high threshhold for shamelessness, daring acts and words, and outrageous tactics. Life in NYC has only steeled me, and now I'm ready for more. Which leads me to my dream. It's really a very simple one, and I'll describe the model in idealistic terms. It will take work to make it practical: I would like there to be a place to go, whenever I have time and energy, to work for the conservative cause -- an office in Manhattan. Ideally, it would be open evenings and weekends. Whenever I walk in the door, there would work ready for me to do. There would be phone calls to make, letters to write, databases to update, and projects ready for someone to pick up and run with. There would be door-to-door actions organized, and places for training and developing new workers. There would be resources available to work on projects alone or in teams -- administrative, artistic -- anything constructive with a goal in mind. Posters and poster-making materials would be in supply, organized for efficient, professional production, and a Wi-Fi connection for anyone who walks in with their laptop computer. This center would have people and materials ready to train any willing worker (screened and qualified) in all the ins and outs of NYC politics, across the spectrum of city life. And because there is so much diversity of opinion and even disagreement on issues within the conservative movement, I think the best approach is to organize by issue, so people can take up work that they are passionate about, steering clear of that type of divisiveness which slows us down. We need fast, sharp, like-minded people racing towards many goals, planning an ambitious amount of work for themselves. We must admit that the extreme left, mostly closet socialists, anarchists and communists, have a much better track record for some of this work. We can learn from them. And we can find ways to be better at many things. As I write this, the word "mill" comes to mind. A sort of mill for activism. Perhaps this can exist virtually, in part; perhaps there is work that can be distributed and returned by e-mail. But something tells me that at least a room or two is needed for this work, where people can be together, share ideas, and push each other forward. I believe in activism, and believe we could use a much stronger public activist presence in NYC. This is not meant as a criticism, but a call for more daring, more regular, better-executed protests, public displays and media events. A small minority of Republicans and Conservatives can make an enormous difference in this town. And there are many others of lilke mind, quietly waiting for someone to lead them. In my dream, I see a group which, without warning, shows up at all sorts of events in town, each time with a different message, a new approach, a fresh creative flair -- always surprising and astonishing those that see them, but clear and memorable. In a jaded city like New York this will be a challenge, but it is possible with the right planning. This group would, when appropriate, lend itself out to deserving causes to draw attention to them and increase turnout. Like every good dream, this one has haunted me for a long time, recurring perenially. It has taken shape and defined itself with time, strenghtening over the years. Does anyone out there feel the same way I do? Do you have opinions on this little dream of mine? I would welcome your e-mails. freepersilly@mac.com reply | email this comment
RH is a very unpleasant person who makes personal attacks. I would not trust him as far as I can throw him. He also misrepresents his record and is drinking the Giuliani kool-aid.
