FOR CLARIFICATION PURPOSES ONLY.

Last week, I handed in my resignation to Ms. Darlene Mealy (NYC council member of the 41st District). I assume that most of you are aware that I have been working with her since December -as the part time Communications Director.  Hopefully, my last day in this role will be on the 26th of March (as per my resignation letter).

The main reasons I have chosen to go this route are what necessitate this column. I want to make it clear that this is my choice -and mine only. I was not forced to walk the plant, nor given any subtle shoves out the door. I have given her enough notice (4 weeks) so that she can hire someone to replace me without her small staff being strained, stressed and/or stretched.

As far as I read it, I can stay on with the councilwoman, once I accept the rules and regulations around public blogging that she handed to me from the City Council’s Office of the General Counsel. I have chosen not to do that, despite many friends and relatives telling me to stay on. They all think that I can offer so much more than I have so far.

These are the rules:

Blogging- Forbidden from Council Computers. Staff members may not use the Council’s office and technology resources to engage in blogging activities regarding Council matters, including posting a comment or response on a blog, unless it is done by Council staff member in his or her official capacity with the authorization of the Council or supervising council member. (This prohibition does not affect the Council’s ability to communicate in any way it sees fit).

Blogging and Visiting Social Networking Sites on Your own time and Equipment.   This policy does not, as a general matter cover private blogging on personal matters or personal social networking activity, which are subject to the AUP. Council staff may engage in blogging or social networking on their own time, using their own equipment and resources (“private blogging” or “private networking”).  However, this policy prohibits blogging or use of social networking sites by Council staff, even when the staff is not using Council equipment or resources, if it impugns the reputation of the Council, its members or its staff; disrupts the business of the Council; violates the Council’s Policy against Discrimination and Harassment; or violates any Federal, State or City law or regulation.

The only other thing I will add to this column is the fact that the letter  in which these rules were outlined, does link my post on Room Eight New York Politics, about “Don Quixote” Charles Barron (go read it).

Look, the New York City Council has every right to lay down rules around blogging; just as I have every right to leave its employ because I may choose not to adhere. Personally, I just don’t want to be handcuffed when I write: that’s all. I believe that I limit myself enough already. Also, let me state that all this has very little to do with Ms. Mealy; she was nice enough (and courageous too) to hire me in the first place. I thank her for the opportunity to observe the inner workings of the council, some council committees, her office (and other electeds on all three levels of government/ their staff and offices) up close. I just know that one day soon enough, I will write something that will cause her to be placed in an uncomfortable spot with the mayor, speaker, or one of her fellow electeds (at any of the 3 levels of government); and before this happens -which would inevitably lead to a confrontation between us- I rather get off the bus now.

Stay tuned-in folks; but as far as I am concerned this matter is closed.

SIDEBAR: If Charles “Chucky Bee” Barron (or one of his minions) was behind all this -via some type of formal or informal complaint- then let me openly tell him I am always ready, willing and available to meet him in a boxing ring, any day or night once he stops being a punk. If he refuses to fight intellectually, then I can accommodate him physically in some type of regulated formal setting (of course). Don’t hide to do things that hurt me (as you have done many times in the past); be as open as I am in your critiques and actions. I don’t have to hear from people about how angry you (and your wife) are at me; you guys see me many times over the by and by: so tell me to my face.

I stand by my observation that Charles Barron is the biggest disappointment in NYC politics and nothing short of a media-hounding megalomaniac. He is a fraud. It’s not about serving the people: it’s about serving his humongous ego. His wife is nothing but a passenger in her limited role as assemblywoman. Between them they no offer no new ideas for legislation or public policy. They offer no new ideas (or programs) for addressing the major concerns of people of color (or all Americans for that matter); they just use people for their self- serving aims. I am just outing them: that’s all. They used me many times, but they will never use me again -nor anyone I can influence.

Some people are saying that the Barrons plan to switch seats when Charles is term-limited; it seems feasible. I could only hope that voters see through this. Some people also say that by being his main critic on the blogs, one of these days, he or some (one) of his thugs will physically attack me. To that I say this: THE TRUTH WILL SET ME FREE (ALWAYS). I stand by what I write.

FIN.

We have spoken about this. After I suggested Barron might not be behind this, only being used so that Quinn could establish a pre-emptive strike against all future Council employees who blog or social network. Did you not once consider this is not about you; that you are just being used -- and not in support of Barron?

Sadly, the pairing of you and Mealy is the worst possible combo to  stand for the rights of political bloggers -- you hard-headed and thin skinned; Mealy clueless and simple.

You knew going in that you would not last long in Mealy's employ. No one does. I believe last year I quoted one ex- Mealy employee as saying that "Mealy is hard to work for." That was putting it nicely.

You could have braced yourself. And used the experience to your advantage. Or for public good. You would have been privy to info that you admit you weren't privy to from the outside. And you didn't have to spill your guts, especially in your blog posts. You could have tested the practical application of "impugn the reputation of the Council, its members or its staff", especially if related to facts, not emotional characterizations.  (You had all the arguments available to you in fed and state Plummer v. Quinn.) You could have tested the city's whistle blower law, such as it is. You could have shed light in some dark places.

Instead, you punk out. Yeah, I said it.

What a waste. I guess your campaign promise would have been the first to go, if you had lucked up and got elected.

BTW, you are already handcuffed when you write -- hopefully with some self-imposed prudence, in addition to not shouting 'fire' in a crowded theater, unless there really are flames racing up the curtains.

Firstly: I was hoping that some of the things I have spoken to you about -relative to this issue- would have been treated in the strictest confidence. It is dissapointing to me to know that I now have to respond to your comment. Secondly: I didn't punk out. I made a deliberate choice after some analysis. Ms.Mealy has treated me relatively well and still would prefer I stay on; however I know that eventually I will write something that will be problematic for her (and not necessarily something relating to the council)which in turn would have led to problems between us. I chose to go out the way I came in: on good terms with the lady. I had no intentions of being the spook who sat by the door funnelling info to anonymous sources - I would always prefer to write up the "juicy" stuff myself; once I encountered such stuff. I am no coward in this regard. I am more open than you could ever imagine, but I have been given another opportunity to contribute to my natural comunity with an initiative that reaches black youth in a very concrete way. I wasn't about to hold down three part time jobs; not at this stage of my life -no matter how badly I need the pocket change. I made a choice to move on rather then wait for the eventual confrontation over my blogging. The position I am moving on to will reveal itself in time. Given a choice, I will nearly always choose academia over working for an elected official. If I dissappointed you then I could only say: c'est la vie. I never intended to get people's hopes up by the position I took with Ms. Mealy and invariably the council. I never promised you (or anyone else) a rose garden: so I do beg your pardon.

As far as I know Ms. Mealy is satisfied with your job performance which is surprising. I saw you at a few events repping her and I read some of your columns favorable to her. I assume you got paid to help her image and you did. People wanted you to find council dirt and there is where you failed. We all know Barron is a hot dog but what about the slush funds and our tax dollars they wasted. You gave us nothing out of the ordinary. I still like your columns. Keep writing.

I went to work for Ms. Mealy to help her revamp her office/staff; help with public relations, media and communications; give political advice; represent her office at committee meetings, and community/public events; write her speeches; help organize her; do constituent service; etc., etc. I didn't go there to spy on the city council, although I was aware that I may be privvy to info that I wasn't normally privvy to. I think I did my part well enough and I have no regrets whatsoever. I REFUSE TO BE HANDCUFFED WHILE WORKING FOR AN ELECTED. I PREFER TO MOVE ON TO SOMETHING ELSE. That way I am not too compromised by my employment. Those who expected big scoops from council buisness/activities with lots of dirt, eye-raisers and innuendo, read all this the wrong way. I think people are projecting their blogging needs and wants on my position, without understanding what my main role was in this regard. I was not an undercover agent. It was never in the plans: if I were I would stay and play the part. I am leaving on my own volition.I am moving on to something I would rather do at this point in time: which is to service black youth in terms of their academic, social, psychological, vocational, economic and cultural needs. As I said before: if given a choice I would nearly always choose working in academia.
