On Michael Jackson: Peter Pan or Pedophile?

It’s almost a month since Michael Jackson died (June 25th, 2009), and yet the news media’s obsession with this individual ceases to wane. Day after day we are inundated with news items about some aspect of his life and legacies; sometimes sordid tidbits emerge about things more speculative in nature than factual. And lately, a few New York politicians have waded into to the news stream with their condemnation of the deceased as a pedophile (Rep. Peter King for example). Well; was he?

Was Michael ever convicted in criminal court of pedophilia? The answer is no. But then that doesn’t say that he wasn’t one either. Many criminals have beaten back criminal charges against them even when it was ostensible that they had indulged in criminal activity. In Michael’s case, I don’t believe we have enough info in order to condemn him as such. And remember this: a man is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law (for whatever that’s worth).

I must admit that at one point in my life I was a big fan of Michael and the Jacksons; and then I grew up. In growing up, I then realized that the type of idolatry many Americans heap on celebrities is sick. It is so unhealthy that it says a lot about individuals and their self-esteem (or lack of). And it also says a lot about the society we now find ourselves living in: a society of celebrity-worship, selfishness, narcissism, greed, ignorance, shallowness and superficiality.

The basis for some of the political attacks on MJ has to do with the fact that he settled at least two lawsuits wherein he was essentially accused of child molestation. Credible reports seem to suggest that he was coerced into settlement by at least one insurance company (against his will). Credible reports also seem to suggest that he may have been blackmailed by voracious scoundrels. Not one credible piece of media evidence has emerged whereby MJ was accused of penile penetration. It was always claims of nudity, exposure, fondling, touching and the like; the type of shit kids do at summer camp when they compare penis sizes, breast sizes, muscles, and such. And for MJ, his life was a sort of summer camp: he never really appeared to grow up; at least in my estimation.

I am not saying that he did or didn’t do some of the things accused -I wasn’t there. I may even speculate that he probably played all sorts of kiddie-type games with his young friends, and as such is open to all types of speculation. What I am saying is this: I am unaware of any claims of penile penetration, and by now this would have surely emerged. NO?

So what are these accusers saying? That he was a pedophile with limits?

To me the question is this: was this man a pedophile, or was he suffering from the “Peter-Pan” syndrome- wherein adults consistently display childlike fantasies, attitudes, actions and behaviors; almost always refusing to take on adult responsibilities and demeanors?

I don’t believe that MJ was a pedophile. I don’t. But that’s just my personal view. But I have to admit that his obsession with kids was disturbing; just as disturbing as his obsession with having his skin complexion lighten up to white (or almost white). And yet I can also tell you that on 125th Street in Harlem, I am told that the highest grossing beauty product is skin bleaching cream. The ones that claim to make your black skin lighter. This problem is much bigger than MJ folks; it is about blacks and their collective self-esteem (but that’s another column).

When I saw the very public interview with MJ and that British journalist a few years ago, I came away with the distinct feeling that this man (MJ) was not a mature adult. He seemed unaware of appropriate adult behavior as it related to kids. And yet I also came away with serious doubts of him being a pedophile. I doubt that any pedophile will go into a very public forum and openly talk about sharing his bed with kids. No way. It’s like a mafia capo going to a news reporter and talking about whackings in which he participated. It just doesn’t fit.

MJ appeared to love kids too much to hurt them like that. He may have displayed some strange behaviors at times, but he never came over as one who would deliberately hurt someone else. I know I am writing from a distance but I can’t help but feel this way, based on all I know about the man -from my mediated reality.

Stay tuned-in folks; always.

I will have to live with the fact that after all the joy and wonderment Michael Jackson gave me, my grief for his passing has been been more acute in the knowledge I could have done more during his trial. Those fans who stood outside the courts, far from being insane devotees were the only people, apart from Geraldo and his family who really made their support physical. Geraldo's support was palpable and humane and it is in hindsight we can see the huge professional risk he took, in light of the widespread hostile court of public opinion prevalent at the time. Geraldo allowed the issue of reasonable doubt to at least have some air-time. What people fail to realize is that the level of defence Jackson's team was required to provide was actually higher than most ordinary cases. Jackson was proved to be innocent, yet still Bill Reilly and King deride Michael's memory while his children survive him . Their actions, contemptible and indecent, echo the bias Michael faced while alive.

I feel the need to point out yet AGAIN that MJ had vitiligo.  If you look at his early concerts, you can see procelin white scars at certain moments.  Hence, the glove, the armbands, the finger tape, the mounds of makeup.  HE WAS NOT TRYING TO BE A WHITE MAN!!!

MJ may have been accquitted in the court of law, but he was convicted in the media before the trial even began!  And most people who think MJ is guilty are too lazy, small-minded or uneducated to do their own research!

Worst case scenario- MJ exposed himself to Jordan Chandler.  But in the way 11 year old boys do, not in a sexual way.  Like the way an older cousin shows a younger cousin how to masturbate.  Is it inappropriate? By society standards-yes.  But, according to the FBI, many children are not innocent like adults would like to view them, some children enjoy sexual behavior.  And don't forget in Ancient Greece, young boys were used for recreational sex and women for procreation only.

There was no evidence- no DNA, no kiddie porn, no credible witnesses. The accusing families had the credibility of the Manson family. Pedos whole existence is based in having sex with kids, everything they do involves this goal.  MJ was a perfectionist who worked extremely hard, when would he have the time?

Its simple, so simple! Michael Jackson worked his ass off since the age of five, in many places which are considered undesirable for children.  HE NEVER HAD A CHILDHOOD!  Unless you have been through it yourself, you have no idea what a terrible, gaping hole it leaves in your heart.

Some people may be able to get passed this unfortuante childhood, but being the sensitive person MJ was, it would have been impossible.  MJ was BORN with the emotions of a man who had already lived two lifetimes.  Its what made his star shine so much brighter than the rest...

The fact that he fathered white kids dont say something about his race issues? He was trying hard to be white. He hated being black. Isn't it obvious?

It is well know that Michael Jackson had vitiligo. It is a skin pigmentation disorder. Darker skin turns lighter. It doeas so in blotches. I don't blame Michael for helping the process aglong if he chose to do so. It is an embarrasing disorder. When people get sever achne thay are embarrased and fix it... We all care about our appearences!

Doesn't matter the color of someones kids. They love them and take care of them. My daughter isn't pure white, but neither am I. I am of American Indian heritage. My daughter is of spanish heritatge. While I can pass as while, poeople notice my daughters light olive skin. They find her complection beautiful.

My adoptive mother adopted to black children. My adopted brother also suffers from vitiligo disorder. I messes with a child's head to look like a dalmation in reverse....

I doubt you'll ever read this post Ron, it's been over 7 months since he passed.  I'm a white person with Vitiligo. It doesn't show up on me as much as it would on a black person because my skin is already very light. However the white spots on my back, shoulders and chest area are devoid of any pigment whatsoever. If I were to go out in the sun and get a tan these white spots would not tan with the rest of my skin. This condition would have been devastating to M.J. because his skin was a medium brown. I don't know why he chose to have his 2 older kids to be white, maybe in his mind he wanted them to look like his post vitiligo self. Who knows. The younger child looks like he has Spanish or Mexican heritage.  As far as the child molestor charges are concerned I agree with what you have written in your column. But with M.J. you never know because his thought process does not seem to be like any other person in the world. (I have never read that there was any penetration though I am not familiar with what child molestors do w/their victims.) I would like to believe that he was Peter Pan in his mind and that nothing happened with any kids.....Since he died I look at pictures of him when he was around 20 years old and think, why would anyone ever want to change that face, he was beautiful...and it's too bad he never had children of his own dna.  It is said he didn't want to look like his father. I really think he looked much more like his mother from the pictures I have seen of her as a young woman. Beautiful people.

Certainly such behavior by any public figure should be discarded strongly as they are followed by adults and kids with equal interest. some argue that this is their personal matter and they have the right for their private interest. But when you become a public figure then you have to maintain some social standard as the image with which you live is given by the society and you have some duty towards society.
