SENATOR KEVIN PARKER: FIGHTING AGAIN.

There is little doubt in my mind that the electeds like Senator Kevin Parker, Nick Perry and a few others from the inept Brooklyn crew, symbolize near everything wrong with too many contemporary elected officials: a breed of mindless, spineless, classless, gutless, unimaginative nincompoops; clueless as to what a true elected should stand for or be about. I say this as I personally observed (all week long) Senator Kevin Parker fighting for his political life against challenger Wellington Sharpe: in a Brooklyn court room and also at the Brooklyn Board of Elections (both located on Adams Street). It’s that faulty part of the electoral process, wherein electeds do near everything imaginable, in order to avoid an election challenge any September. Truth be told is that judges, lawyers and other officers of the court facilitate and encourage this affront to democracy every single election year.

On Friday 6th August, 2010, the courts will probably again allow Senator Parker and his attorneys to frivolously -though legally- frustrate his opponent, despite knowing that Sharpe submitted almost three times the number of signatures required to qualify for the ballot in next month’s democratic primary. One judge once tritely summed it up by saying: “this is how the game is played; that’s all!”

For weeks -seemingly unending- a candidate can be tied up in the court (and at the Board of Elections) simply because the rules of engagement allow lawyers to make money under false pretences- during the silly election season. If something cries out for reform it surely is the pre-election ballot-access process and the attendant court challenges.

So here is the rub: an elected official named Kevin Parker, who has consistently failed (over the last 8 years) to demonstrate the decorum, decency, intelligence, morality, integrity and class to be a state senator, has a chance of possibly getting his only opponent off the ballot on a series of technicalities, via legal intimidation and chicanery. And not a single mainstream newspaper has the guts to write this story as it unfolds: these same newspapers which went after former state senator Hiram Monseratte like nobody’s business, now turns a blind eye to Kevin Parkers indiscretions and extravagances. And Parker has done more dirt than Monseratte could only hope to do.

But those aren’t the only strange happenings in this race folks; they aren’t. Why hasn’t Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes prosecuted said senator Kevin Parker, for his assault of a newspaper reporter many many moons ago? Why aren’t the vocal feminist groups of today not calling for Parker’s expulsion from the senate (a la Monseratte) given the many strikes Parker has against him?  Why aren’t visible and vocal union leaders not calling for Parker’s head, given the many times he has used violence to settle perceived grievances? Senator Parker is as belligerent as a young Mike Tyson; he is as violent as any common felon and law breaker; and yet he is being endorsed by Nick Perry and a slew of his fellow electeds from Brooklyn. How shameful that not one single elected has the temerity to stand up and say Parker should not be re-elected: not one.

Some time aback, Kevin Parker cowardly attacked a NYC traffic officer over a traffic ticket he felt was undeserved; this physical attack has led to the state laws now being changed, whereby it is now a felony to physically attack a traffic-enforcement official. Recently he showed the willingness and the inclination to physically go after a female member of the senate, and yet none of his colleagues will demonstrate the testicular fortitude to condemn this sordid behavior.  Parker has clearly shown over time that he is no role-model for the millions of young black men and women trying to navigate the treacherous lures of the violent inner-city streets.

Senator Parker’s opponent (Wellington Sharpe) is a pillar of Brooklyn’s East-Flatbush community. He is a very successful businessman who has been a member of the Community Board (#17) for many years. He has spent the last quarter-century successfully developing an education center and a job-training facility. He has worked with infants, children and young adults all his professional life -as an educator and also as a health-professional. He holds membership in many prominent civic, social, cultural and political organizations in Brooklyn. He is just the refreshing breath of clean air needed to sanitize Parker’s stale tracks. But who is going to help Sharpe? Not mainstream media based on what they have shown so far in this race. And that’s a shame; isn’t it?

Stay tuned-in folks.

I also missed you on Monday at Supreme Court.

I did see Wellington, and had to re-introduce myself, as I hadn't seen him for about 6 or 7 years, prior to me becoming a reporter or blogger. I won't go into our brief conversation, or what I overheard, although I could. I did give him my card. Haven't heard from him.

As for Parker, allegations of violent male behavior is bigger than one person or another. Or another...

Violence can, at turns, be expressed by word or deed.

We live in a violent society. It is what it is. Situations are assessed by their particular elements, and at times addressed, as in the case you reference regarding the state law protecting traffic enforcement agents.

Having said that, for all that has been written about Parker,  having been in his presence, personally I am not afraid of him. And I have a particularly sensitive radar when it comes to violent men. I could say more, but I choose not to.

Once or twice, I have been physically afraid of you. No need to rehash. I have described both incidents elsewhere on this blog. I don't hold either incident against you. Instead, I look at the sum total of our interactions.

As I said, individual situations are assessed by their elements.

How can the New York Press sit by and allow Parker to knock off his callenger when he is facing a court date for assulting a reporter?  Has the era of reporters looking out for each other and protecting each other ended?

As for "the era of reporters looking out for each other and protecting each other", I would like to know more about it.

I'm very happy that you did this posting.

Question: If the media won't take this issue as seriously as it should, what do you think can help get the issue of violence with our elected officials/candidates into the forefront?

The women's groups when after Hiram Monserrate and were resposible for he losing his election.  Why are they giving State Senator Kevin Parker and Councilman Mail Ydanis Rodriguez a free ride?

Thank you for this important post. i had no idea that Parker was such a thug. Like a lot of people, I depend on Newspapers for this kind of information and as far as i can tell, they have been completely silent on this. Thankfully, there are websites such as yours where we the voters, can find the critical information. Strange times indeed, that one can no longer count on a newspaper for this.

After 37 years in New York's politics there is no one (male or female) who can make charges of violence against me. NEVER HAPPENED. I have never hit a woman in my life. I totally respect women: always have and always will. In general I am a pacifist (despite not being one to turn the other cheek). I see violence as only an important and necessary self-defence tool. The incident you so often refer to Mary Alice, is one whereby Tish James was hitting me, and poking me with her fingers, and pushing and shoving me lightly, so as to provoke me into doing something stupid. She was following me around and saying all sorts of silly stuff about things she percieved I had written against her. She initiated it. Why don't you write the TRUTH instead of always insinuating I was in the wrong there and then. Yes, I did get VERBAL. It was my last resort. The other incident of which you speak I have no clue. You know enough people who have known me for decades; why don't you ask around as to my character? Being verbal and loud does not mean you are a violent person. You are the only woman I know to say that you were "afraid" of me at some point in time. I will file this -like other filings relative to things you have said and written about me- under the heading "BEFUDDLED" and "BEWILDERED".

No one hits me. No one.

I said once or twice I have been physically afraid of you.

And yes, one of the incidents was your argument with James. One minute we were having what I thought was a cordial conversation. The next, you two were screaming at each other. When I got over my shock, I reminded you James is a lawyer, then walked away. Why?  Because 1) you started it with your post insinuating she was being investigated (I don't blame her for getting upset) and 2) you two were agitated and I was within swinging distance.

The other incident  was in Junior's Restaurant in 2008 at a Kevin Powell presser. You were getting aggressive with him because he did not commit then and there to a specific date and time for an interview with him.

Remember this?:

 http://www.r8ny.com/blog/rock_hackshaw/kevin_powell_pissed_me_off_today_and_he_should_know_better.html

Where I was standing, you two were in front of me, and there was a chair, table, booth seats, and the wall behind me. I had no where to go.

Once again, I was within swinging distance. I had to step between the two of you, with a lump in my throat, hoping I could (successfully) dissipate the situation before it escalated further.

Befuddled or bewildered, you have no idea what it is to live as a woman in a society where men get aggressive and sometimes violent, by word or deed.

My feelings (and my survival instinct) are my own; you don't have to acknowledge, or understand them.

I didn't live this long -- without being gang raped, stabbed, shot, or chopped up and dumped in a body bag somewhere -- for nothing. When I get the cue, especially from men behaving aggressively, I move my feet. I am not looking forward to being collateral damage when I grow up.

All I can say is: WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I am still befuddled and bewildered. If you ever hear of my involvement in something violent then be assured that my actions were in self defence.

I said I have never been afraid of Kevin Parker, and I have been around him numerous times.

I also said everyone is due their day in court. From published reports, Parker's trial will start on August 16.

Violent behavior from men is not a black and white issue.

Despite his domestic violence issues, I was the one who wrote  this about Dominic Carter's right to blog in peace here: http://www.r8ny.com/blog/mary_alice_miller/give_the_man_a_chance.html

Where do we draw the line regarding violence? Give a pass to some, and not to others?

Look for police records, professional records, social or political records of any kind and you will find no evidence of me being a violent person but if you must fabricate something to justify your views or perceptions by all means go ahead. This is so sad Mary Alice: so so sad. As I said before, you lose credibility with me daily.

It is YOU who can't see the contradiction.

According to you, I "fabricated" an incident that I documented two years ago, prior to Parker's photographer incident and prior to Dominic's DV incident, in order to justify my position today. Yeah, that makes sense -- to you.

And I don't care about your "credibility". Keep it. I am an individual, not one of your groupies.

You are the one who assumed I was going to hit, attack, assault (or whatever) Kevin Powell and/ or Tish James. So given that I have never done this in a lifetime of politcal invovement all I can ask is WHERE are your perceptions coming from? What is the underlying issue that causes you to make these charges and also claim I called you a racist? What"s your beef with me? All I have done is treat you with respect, support and comeraderie since I have known you. Could be you are not playing with a full deck. Or it could be that something about me rubs you the wrong way. As I said before I am befuddled and bewildered in terms of trying to find an explanation to the things you have written and said about me. Anyway: ENUFF.
