Why is the New York Times and other Major Newspapers Ignoring the Race in the 40th Assembly District?

The New York Times is a fraudulent newspaper. There; I said it. To me it’s true. The editors are a bunch of scam-artists. Year after year, they project that they are the most liberal of all newspapers in this country; but that’s a lie, and it’s time to expose their hypocrisy. Okay; so there goes my future gig at the Times: whoop-dee-damn-do. I hate hypocrisy. I really do.

Two years ago Assemblyman Clarence Norman (43rdAD) was facing reelection-while at the same time facing indictments in Brooklyn’s courts of about 80 counts-the New York Times sat on their hands. They refused to enthusiastically endorse his competent opponent-attorney Edward A. Roberts. They also took a pass on Roger Green’s race (57thAD)-when an aggressive early stand could have helped prevent that embarrassment. This year, Diane Gordon is in a similar situation, and again the Times refuses to endorse in that race (40th AD). Either of Ms. Gordon’s opponents (Kenneth Evans or Winchester Key) is preferable to her. PERIOD. Ms. Gordon is also being opposed for District Leader/Female (she holds two positions in this district), and even there she should be voted out.

Could the Times be practicing a not-too-subtle form of racism? I say: maybe. Let me tell you why. Look at the areas in this city that are predominantly black or Hispanic, and also where the representatives are hideously bad in every which way-including thieves and scoundrels; how does the Times deal with these districts come election time? They usually ignore them. When it comes to white areas where the representation is even sub-par (far more felonious), the Times would take a pro-active and aggressive approach to helping get those inept incumbents out. Why the disparity? Is it because the New York Post, the Daily News and Newsday, all sell better than the Times, in black and Hispanic areas of the city. Is it: you don’t purchase me, so therefore I will ignore your plight?

In all fairness to the Times, let me say that the other newspapers that I mentioned are almost as bad. I will give you the names of seven elected officials, and I want you to go and look at how the major newspapers responded to their districts at election time. The names are; Gloria Davis, Kevin Parker, Ada Smith, Clarence Norman, Roger Green, Diane Gordon and Angel Rodriguez. I am positing that if these were predominantly white districts that were being represented, that the newspapers would have been deeply involved at a higher level of profiling. The in-depth coverage of races and the hard-hitting endorsements against the incumbents or their replacements- cronies who are usually tainted- is usually missing in minority districts. Why is that?

Diane Gordon is caught on tapes involving her near-octogenarian mother in her dirt-this alone should disqualify her from office. She also attempted to involve Councilmember Charles Barron-even though he was ignorant of all her schemes- without any conscience or remorse. If the newspapers give Diane Gordon a pass and refuse to endorse any of her opponents, she could darn well be re-elected by many in the district who are unaware of her shenanigans. And believe me there are many. Barron is taking the cowardly way out by refusing to endorse any of her opponents-even though Evans aided in his initial election to office by being Barron’s petition-technician. But then who ever said that Charles Barron wasn’t blindly self-absorbed? Not I.

The newspapers need to take an aggressive approach to letting voters know of her actions and her upcoming trial; with all the potential ramifications of such. If they continue to ignore this race- aiding in Gordon’s re-election- then it will be like seeing the “Rodney King” tapes and recommending all those officers whipping Rodney’s ass, be cited with commendations. It will be shameful to say the least.

Well, there are 22 days to the primary; we shall surely see how the media handles the 40th AD in these coming days.

At Least the Times is Covering the Pension Issue

The state legislature's pension deals are doing far more harm to us and our future than whatever would be said about these candidates.  The article today is another must read.  http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/22/nyregion/22pension.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin.

The Times actually objected to the plundering of Medicaid next year.  What next -- having the Times write that perhaps it isn't reasonable for public school spending in the rest of the state shouldn't be that high, funded by money sucked away from the city's children?  Someone must have died there and been replaced.

People should link these decisions to the individual legislators.  Reporters should ask them "YOU decided that it was more important for the city to pay another $4 billion per year for richer pensions for public employees who are leaving, and not pay higher salaries to those still providing services, reduce class sizes in the schools, open the libraries longer, to cut the property taxes back to where they were so regulated rents would also fall based on lower costs, etc.  Explain WHY the richer pensions were more important?  Explain WHY that is fair to the majority of your constituents who don't have any retirement plan at all, and don't have health insurance while they are working, let alone when they are in their 30 years of leisure?"

If they are honest, they'll say they had no idea they were making that decision, and franky they don't care.  They just vote "yes" in exchange for the right to a few handouts.

That's the real scandal.  And my uncorrupt White representative, Jim Brennan, is just as guilty as any corrupt Black or Latino representative.  We're all hit by the same deals.

When I complained about effect of this on services for the less well off, it was dismissed as left wing nonsense.  When others complained about the cost to taxpayers, it was dismissed as right wing nonsense.  Now that it is in the Times, does that mean it isn't nonsense anymore?

Go to the train stops in the 40th District and the 43rd,, 58th.  Do you ever see anyone carrying or reading the NY Times?  The Grey Lady is a dying giant. Proof af that is the fact that you cant read much of it online unless you pay.

Rock, you and Maurice, and Gate have more influence than the Times in local politics as well as the Daily news which links to this site and many others. Just today, Ben Smith linked the Yvette Clarke story you wrote to his blog and said you beat him to reporting this story.

Nobody reads the Times' in those districts.  At some point or another, business and bottom line come ahead of politics.  If the only people who read the Times live in predominantly white areas, and your advertisers cater to your readers, then cover what matters to your readers.  Listen Rock... even more troubling is an earlier article on this blog discussing the fact that voters in her district aren't aware that Diane Gordon is under indictment.  That's not the fault of the Times or the Daily News or the Post.  They covered the issue (as much as some dispicable local elected official should get covered).  I read about it in the same papers available to people in the 40th.  It's up to them to be even A LITTLE pro active and try to read about what's going on around them. 

I always blame the apathetic electorate... not the media-It's not their fault this time.  People need to wake up.

Rock, you are totally out of line to refer to Charles Barron as "cowardly." You can call Charles many things but "cowardly" is not one of them. In fact, although I often disagree with Charles' style and rhetoric, if I had to cast my vote for the most, and possibly the only courageous elected official in New York, it would be for Charles. And this is not the first time that I have said this openly. Wrong sometimes! Courageous and Outspoken...Always. You ought to recall, Rock that in 2004 after Clarence was indicted, and some of us tried to get a candidate to run against him, the Councilman was the only elected official in Brooklyn with the courage to stand up against Clarence and Corruption. Even though he made it clear that he didn't think much of the candidate, he did it out of principle. And he didn't just give a paper endorsement. He walked the streets and drove around the 43rd District with a microphone to back it up. And from my personal experience I know that whenever I have found young people in any part of the city who needed a "big brother" to give them a "pep" talk, if I invited Charles to speak to them, he would not only respond and come out to where they were, but he would take these "ghetto youth" into the sophisticated atomosphere of the City Council. As is evident, I share your frustration in the matter of Diane Gordon and have spoken out on this matter. But after his courageous act in 2004, I think you should be wise enough to know that Charles would not consider supporting someone who was caught on wire-tape discussing a bribe. I have spoken to Ken Evans. He has disassociated himself completely with your remarks and intends to to say this to the Councilman in person. You and Charles have had a solid relationship for many years. You owe him a public apology and the Councilman who is himself often impetuous and intemperate in his own language is likely to understand and forgive you for the kinship in your style.

Just because the New York Times hasn't endorsed in the 40th AD doesn't mean they won't before the primary, there are still three weeks to go you know.  Maybe they just haven't decided who they like yet or maybe they simply don't like any of the candidates running for various reasons.  It is wrong for Rock to say or imply the Times ir racist, particularly when he knows full well they have blacks on their editorial board and 99 times out of a 100 take strong liberal positions editorially that you'd agree with.

What?  Are you out of your mind?  Wait.  You may have a head but your brain does not reside there.  No one in the 40th reads the NYT.   You may have a point when people such as yourself presume that persons of color have not the incliniation, ability to read the NYT.  We may not agree with the the NYT's editorial board but advocating continued neglect of the the district by anyone who does not live there speaks to why persons such as myself have to be vigiliant against brain trusts such as yourself. 

As a child, I remember asking the lady who sold the paper to sell the NYT so that I didn't have to take the bus to buy one.  After all these years its sad to see such attitudes are alive and well.

According to the NYT Hakeem is a rising star.  My question, rising to what?  I had been a supporter of Hakeem in his past two campaigns against Roger Green.  Now it seems that Hakeem is not only experienced in running for office but experienced in the ways of the elected officials who do not represent the best interests of the community. 

I've heard that Hakeem is engaged in quite a few introductions as a precipice to deal making.  If he is making deals before he is elected what will he do after he holds office?

It's interesting that Errol is supporting Karim Camara in the first open election following Clarence Norman's disgraceful term in office.

Please ask Errol out loud what inducement Clarence gave him to persuade Errol not to run against Tish James in the 2001 City Council elections.  As a reminder, Tish did not win that election.  James Davis did.

Maurice you are one of the few people that I both love and respect in this game; you know this. So despite our conversation on this article, I have to respond here publicly. I hope you do not take offense, because that is not my intent.

I want you to go back 20 years; back to some of your campaigns and even back to the Harriet Tubman Political Club that you founded- in which I was a member; and then tell me if I didn't stand up to you and your executive officers, or even your campaign manager whenever I felt strongly about something. I AM NOT AFRAID TO TELL IT AS IT IS , AND YOU KNOW THIS MORE THAN MOST.

I am not saying that I am always correct, but I ALWAYS strive for TRUTH. I always call it as I see it. And after ten years of dealing with Barron- up close and personal- the TRUTH to me is that he is not only a coward (by convenience), but also a narcissist with a pathological fixation on racial issues, becaus the mirror causes him the most pain.

On many levels Charles Barron is a brilliant individual, but his inability to introspect-because of an unbridled ego- will prevent him from reaching his full potrential. Time will bear me out. You will see.

That's the last I will say on this matter.

At least Maurice, Gatemouth and a few others here, offer up facts, history, context or reasoning when they disagree with me; some of you should take a page out of their books. These silly attacks are BORING. You can't silence me, and I am not going away unless it's on my terms. So get over it.

Your basic point is telling, but the Times has sometimes endorsed in minority districts, even outside of Fort Greene/Clinton Hill (where they surely have readers). Last year they endorsed Darleen Mealy; they also endorsed Sandra Roper against Clarence (although I'm not sure this is any sort of improvement). When Angel Rodriguez  first ran they endorsed him against the demonstrably superior Eduardo Castell. The truth is they do half-decent coverage of Congessional races, in both white and minority areas, and are abysmal when covering the more local offices. As to endorsements, they are not really white-centric; they are Manhattan plus Yuppie-centric. Don't see them showing much interest in the Brighton Beach Assembly race, do you? And certainly that one has an historic angel that you, as an immigrant, can surely appreciate.

It is funny Gate that you did not mention that the Times has yet to cover the Connor Diamondstone race in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights.  Forget about Gordon the times did not even do a story about how she offered several judges the nomination if they paid up.  And its on tape.  These same judges are listed as Gordon contibutes so it will not be much work for the reports to track down.  Another story the times forgotabout and all the other media was the data base problem at the BOE.

Relax Maurice and Rock you guys have proven that well informed writing on blogs can be very powerful and replace the established press.  And the blogs are at the model T stages (just getting started).

The BUMS can still run, but they can no long hide

Why is it every time I read a post by Maurice or Rock, it degenerates into a battle over who has more of a legacy in the flatbush/ east new york/ central brooklyn.  Look guys... if I were you... I wouldn't be pushing for the lead on this one... as since you guys have been on the scene those neighborhoods have lagged behind most of the city, including other ethnic neighborhoods, in improving crime, economic development, etc.  You wanna take responsibility for the rebirth of the lower east side, or south bronx, or harlem, that's one thing... but fighting to be king of central brooklyn... c'mon... get something done for real, and all will sing your praises.

The only one I ever see in a pissing war is Rock. Maurice and Rock are not a couple. All you have to do is read their blogs to see the difference. Rock's ego makes him want to be the King. His actions are a far cry from that. Maurice on the other hand has proven that he can take on the bad guys and get stuff done.

If you had read my writings before trying to attack me, you would have observed that I hate royalty ( leeches), and as such I  don't want to be king of anything, and never has. I have worked with more politicans and activists than you could count, and I DARE anyone to find someone  that I have worked with over the years, who would make the charges made here. ALL the people who have worked with me will tell you EXACTLY who I am and what I am about. I have done more pro-bono political work than most in this arena. I have served in more organizations than you can probably count. The folks who have never worked with me will continue to spout these lies. They try to attack my truths but can't. I know that truth by its very nature is controversial, so i will continue to write it.

I am quite fine with my accomplishments in life. And believe me when I say that my ego is in a healthy place. I don't  need accolades or awards to make me feel good about myself, in fact I have refused MANY awards. Community service is joyful enough, and I have been doing that all my life.  As to where in the 5 dozen odd columns I have done here, I am boasting about anything, I will leave that to objective parties to judge. People who suffer from low self-esteem will always hate the fact that others have done many diverse things with their lives. When I am attacked on the blogs I have to defend myself, my history and my credentials; observe than when I do that, all of my detractors shut up until they later attack me for stating my defences.  Since you can't prove me inaccurate , you attempt to denigrate. I have been there and back, and when I speak of things I speak from 1st hand info. ALSO: I don't ATTACK anyone hiding behind some  COWARDLY anonymous vest.
