Caroline Kennedy wants Hillary's Senate seat, would she be a good choice?

Various articles out today, including this one in the Times, report that Caroline Kennedy is lobbying David Paterson for the job of New York's junior U.S. Senator:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/06/nyregion/06demwomen.html?bl&ex=1228712400&en=87713734acb711c3&ei=5087%0A

Hillary's seat is of course the one that belonged to her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy.  Caroline Kennedy was born in and has lived most of her life in New York City and is an attorney and long time political activist, who has been quietly very active in public affairs, particularly in local education issues.

Gov. Paterson is under intense pressure from feminist groups to pick another woman to replace Hillary.  They don't think it is acceptable for the Senate's most high profile female senator to have her seat taken by a man.  Paterson is also being pressured by hispanic and african-americal lawmakers who want the seat for one of their own, as well as lawmakers from buffalo and elsewhere up north who think it should be the "upstate's" senate seat.

DSCC and DNC officials of course want someone who can actually get elected to the seat when the time comes.  If Paterson chooses someone like Nydia Velasquez or Carolyn Maloney who aren't that well known statewide, there is going to be an excellent chance of the GOP targeting that seat when it comes up, or other more well known democrats doing so.  Party officials are going to want Paterson picking someone who can actually keep the seat.

Paterson himself has to think about his own election campaign in 2010, and no doubt wants to avoid angering this or that faction within the party by choosing the wrong person with his Senate pick.  He doesn't want his Senate pick used against him by disaffected party members as a rallying cry for primary opposition in his own campaign.  This alone has to be a strong incentive to pick someone from outside the New York political machine.

I have stated on here before that picking Caroline Kennedy to replace Hillary makes a lot of sense for these reasons.  She's high profile, she's a woman, she's a lifelong New Yorker, and when the election does come, you can't realistically see the voters of New York denying the daughter of John F. Kennedy the chance to continue serving in her uncle's seat.  I actually doubt a serious democratic candidate would run against her unless she gets into some controversy or does a terrible job.  Consider also that Caroline Kennedy chaired Obama's vp search committee and is closely aligned with the new President-elect.  New York state could benefit from having a Senator with strong ties to the White Hosue.

So I am sure Paterson is giving Caroline Kennedy serious consideration.  But of course she has never held political office before and this might be annoying to all the career politicos in the state who have spent years building their resumes for this kind of position.  They are probably calling Paterson and asking him, "how do you know she'd do a good job?"  and "is the Senate the right place to start a political career?"  To which Caroline Kennedy would say, "Hillary Clinton had never held office before either did she?"

There is no way that she would be picked. Patterson would lose alot of support from alot of different quarters over this. When Hillary ran she was asked to run, and, well, she ran for the office. Clinton wasn't appointed to the office. This would be a very cynical move for Patterson, since Kennedy has not only not held public office, but has scant work history as well. She has sat on boards, etc., but really she hasn't done very much. Obama should make her Ambassador to Ireland, but thats about it.

NO CHIT Senate SEAT for Caroline Kennedy by a Gov. eager to Please Obama!

http://www.femisex.com/content/no-chit-senate-seat-caroline-kennedy-a-gov-eager-please-obama

The above was posted on Femisex.com and I couldn't agree more with their take on this!

Maloney has earned the seat by years of work that matches Clinton's in thought and deed.   Paterson want to curry favor with Obama but voters will be ticked off big time!

I agree with the other commentator (Thanks for the link). We need someone representing New York who has legislative experience.

Caroline Kennedy does not DESERVE a senate seat for living in NY and being a Kennedy should not factor.  Neither should someone's gender, being African-American or Hispanic factor.  When did we lose sight that it should just be the best person for the job - the person with experience and a track recor?

Having done good work for public schools is a great thing, but that is not enough to give someone a senate seat.  Yes, she was on the VP selection committee, but had her name not been Kennedy - would that still be true?

We need someone qualified, someone who will consider what is best for NY, someone who has been involved in NY politics.  Not someone who is using the seat to contine a legacy of a political party.

Carolyn Maloney would be a good pick - she is a strong Democrat and knows NY well.   She has been involved in public service in NY since being elected in 1982.

If Caroline Kennedy wants the senate seat - let her run for it the next time around - Gov. Patterson should appoint someone with real experience and I think Carolyn Maloney is that person.

Caroline Kennedy has now formally asked Paterson for the appointment to Hillary's Senate seat.  All the democratic officeholders around the state lining up for a chance at the seat are no doubt objecting to her candidacy on the basis of the fact that she hasn't paid her dues and has never campaigned before the state electorate.  Does Paterson pick someone who will have to face voters in 2010 who has never "faced voters"?

The thing is that this seat once belonged to Caroline's Uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, who not only had never faced the state electorate, but had never lived in the state until he got a manhattan apartment to establish residency.  But he had been U.S. Attorney General and Hillary had been first lady.

The press is clearly in love with the idea of Caroline getting this seat.  But if Paterson picks her he is going to have to walk a fine line so he doesn't get accused of picking a name over qualifications.  Caroline Kennedy has plenty of qualifications for the seat, but the spin the local poilticos are going to give is that she doesn't.

I wrote to Governor Patterson early on expressing my disbelief that he would seriously consider appointing Caroline Kennedy to the Senate. Ms. Kennedy has done nothing in the interim to change my opinion that her appointment would be a serious mistake.  It should take more than the Kennedy name to be deserving of this appointment. You Know! Are the people totally meaningless??

Caroline Kennedy would be a great replacement for Hillary since she's a woman and a lifelong New Yorker like you stated. 800 phone numbers

Caroline Kennedy has officially asked Paterson to appoint Hillary to the Senate seat. All staff of the democratic state in the queue for a chance at the seat, no doubt, oppose his candidacy on the fact that she has not paid its contributions and never before state voters based advertised. Paterson to choose someone to face voters in 2010 than ever before "to the voters? If you gonna hitiing this then just tail your goodies and make me up just jump in Fran Drescher | Happily divorced.
