Yes incumbents can be beaten in primaries-- give Dan Squadron his props

Tonight Daniel Squadron in the 25th Senate district disproved one of the strongest myths in local politics, that you can't defeat a longtime entrenched incumbent in a democratic primary.  Tonight Daniel Squadron retired Marty Connor!

264 of 266 precincts reporting.

Squadron - 12,688  54%

Connor - 10,757    46%

Squadron's victory ought to silence those who lost today who will whine, in the voice of Kevin Powell: "well he was the incumbent I couldn't win anyway"

I look at an entrenched politician like Marty Connor being replaced by a newcomer like Daniel Squadron as a good thing.  New blood is always good.  Marty Connor was never a bad senator but you can do the same job too long.

Everyone raise a glass in toast of Daniel Squadron, whose victory should renew everyone's faith that challengers actually CAN win races in this city.

sorry gatemouth. Apparently people don't care about who you worked for or what you think.

Does Roberto Ramirez have anything left in the Bronx?

All it proves is that you can beat an incumbent only if you come from money. He has daddy to thank. rwallnerny, don't mislead the populace.

Danyak-

Yes, it takes money to defeat an incumbent.  However, even with money, it's hard to defeat a 30 year incumbent.

What does it say about that incumbent?

In this case, Connor may have done (mostly) the right things in the community, but didn't lead.

Also, when you are an elected official as well as an election lawyer, at least have the decency to not practice election law in your own district!

I think Gatemouth should back up his words with actions re: his concerns about Squadron.  If Gatemouth really is this concerned with Squadron's ethics, integrity .etc, then he should run against him in 2010.  Nobody can make the case to 25th district voters about Squadron better than Gatemouth.

I'd love to make the race but my daddy is still alive and heavily invested in Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae. When I get it, I ontend to spend my inheritence by taking my family out to the Queen (once).

Plus, now that the election is over I'm starting a pool about how long it takes before Squadron endorses the Brooklyn Bridge Park Plan. My guess is by March 14.

Once he has a record to run on, I will judge Squadron on that; no sense holding a grudge if the guy votes right and delivers for the community. Only a cold-blooded prick would run against someone he has little argument with out of personal ambition.
