sjb1's blogWhy No 9/11 Memorial License Plate? The tragedy of flight 3407 in Buffalo and the loss of Beverly Eckert brings to mind again the terrible tragedy of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Beverly Eckert’s husband died in that attack and she became active with the 9/11 families through the Voices of September 11. While construction is underway at the World Trade Center site for a permanent memorial, it’s sad to realize that the State of New York is still blocking a 9/11 Memorial specialty license plate for cars. Many other states have approved 9/11 license plates, including California that collects over $1.3 million every year from over 65,000 California 9/11 license plates raising over $8 million to date. But we can not have the plate in New York. Because, on July 26, 2006, Governor Pataki unexpectedly vetoed New York’s 9/11 Remembrance license plate that had been unanimously approved by the New York State Legislature due litigation in the courts.
