Why No 9/11 Memorial License Plate? The tragedy of flight 3407 in Buffalo and the loss of Beverly Eckert brings to mind again the terrible tragedy of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Beverly Eckert’s husband died in that attack and she became active with the 9/11 families through the Voices of September 11. While construction is underway at the World Trade Center site for a permanent memorial, it’s sad to realize that the State of New York is still blocking a 9/11 Memorial specialty license plate for cars. Many other states have approved 9/11 license plates, including California that collects over $1.3 million every year from over 65,000 California 9/11 license plates raising over $8 million to date. But we can not have the plate in New York. Because, on July 26, 2006, Governor Pataki unexpectedly vetoed New York’s 9/11 Remembrance license plate that had been unanimously approved by the New York State Legislature due litigation in the courts. Back in August 2004, New York’s DMV issued a moratorium on all new specialty plates which has deprived many legitimate organizations from obtaining a new specialty plate and even more importantly today, deprives the State of significant revenue. The moratorium was issued in order to block a specialty plate for The Children First Foundation (CFF) that, according to the DMV, was “patently offensive” because it carried the organization’s logo of two smiling children and the words “Choose Life.” The mission of CFF is to promote adoption as a positive choice for unwanted pregnancies. CFF has taken New York State to Federal Court for violating their civil liberties and has already won two hearings. While the court battle drags on, the State is losing significant revenue, paying for massive legal fees and denying many other charitable organizations and causes equal access to specialty plates - including a 9/11 Memorial plate. Twenty-two other states have already approved Choose Life license plates, including Connecticut. Isn’t it time for Governor Paterson to immediately resolve the DMV’s “patently offensive” moratorium and settle this case? Taxpayers should contact the Governor and demand an answer.
Just so you know: when the so called 9/11 memorial at the WTC site is complete, there will still be no 9/11 memorial in NY State. Few know that the billion dollar, eight acre memorial will remake the WTC site so that it does not acknowledge the attacks. There can be no history of 9/11 found anywhere on the site "in order to preserve the integrity of the memorial" as per those responsible for the memorial. As architect Michael Arad told me one 9/11 anniversary at ground zero, ackknowledging 9/11 at the site would be "didactic." Visitors to the site, us or future generations, will see nothing to remind them of what happened here, Sept. 11. They will not be allowed to make any judgements; nobody is to blame anybody for anything. There will be no lessons learned; no need for vigiliance, no inspiration and no resolve. And you are paying for it. For more info, see captbillyburke.blog.com My thanks to Michael Burke for an illuminating post. If readers have not followed his link - I encourage you to do so. How is it possible that New Yorkers have allowed themselves to de-evolve into the post 9-11 complacency that has enveloped our city and state? The days, weeks and months that followed the horrific attacks of September 11th were perhaps the proudest of our city's history. In the wake of abject horror, the people of our city and the surrounding state rose above and beyond any expectation of human compassion. We reached out to one another - we all had our story of that day - some more tragic than others - but all heartfelt and forever lifechanging. How is it then, that we are here today posting such vile travesties as memorials that fail to recognize the truth of that awful day and a government that refuses to acknowledge our resiliency as a people lest it offend the demagogues that profit from death on a daily basis. Those of us who have kept our memory clear remember that day. We mourn our fallen family, friends and heroes. We remember all those that responded - not only on that fateful morning, but in the many weeks and months that followed. To my friends that spent endless months sorting through the remains of the fallen towers and the people that perished that day, I salute you. I cannot fathom the strength and fortitude required to do what you did on a daily basis. To the families and friends that continue to mourn those that never came home that day - I offer you my prayers and compassion. I wish I could offer you closure, but I know that will never come. To the men and women that have spent the last eight years protecting us from the next attack - I thank you. The general public will never know just how many times you interceded to protect us - but I do. The sacrifices that you have made and the committment that you have shown deserve medals and parades - instead you have worked thanklessly for the sake of those who have forgotten the dangers that they need to be protected from. To those of you who would have us forget what happened that day - through memorials that fail to recognize the events that led to the tradegy of so many deaths and the bureauacy that would have us believe that we should be more concerned about Planned Parenthood's annual report than the PEOPLE that died that day - I say go straight to hell with the terrorists responsible for murdering all those thousands of innocent people - because that is where you belong.
That is why we who lived through the attack, parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles must make sure the future generations know what happened. We must also push to have a thorough and truthful investigation about why the attack took place and how NORAD was not able to intercept the aircraft or ordered to stand down. WE MUST NEVER FORGET!

Sure, if you make your money killing children, you might take offense with an organization committed to providing real Adoption alternatives for women being pressured to kill their own children.
Now, if we want to talk about what's patently offensive - the organizations opposing this plate because it cuts into their abortion profits are a good place to start. Of course we shouldn't be too surprised. If you remember, in response to thousands of human beings being murdered on September 11th in an utter disregard for the value of life, Planned Parenthood offered free abortions - for a limited time.
Governor Paterson definitely needs to be held accountable for holding up the September 11th license plate and the revenue it will produce for the State of New York. It's bad enough that would-be stimulus packages are camoflauging obsence amounts of taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, but our Governor is also preventing a revenue stream that could relieve some of the burden on taxpayers because he's afraid to upset his friends at Planned Parenthood.
Enough.
