Kevin Powell faces The Real World *** FOLLOW-UP ***

I wanted to send an interesting follow-up to close something that I had raised last week.  You may recall an original posting that had appeared on the Kevin Powell for Congress campaign blog last week (see: http://www.kevinpowellforcongress.org/featured_blogs2/2008/08/13/i-got-a-story-to-tell/).

Last week I took serious offense at this arrogant attack and posted a thread here on R8NY (see: http://www.r8ny.com/blog/slothman8888/kevin_powell_likes_demeaning_teenagers_exclusive.html) which then became a hot thread mainly due to responses left by a few workers from Powell (Gene Johnson, Michael Spitzer-Rubenstein, and Powell's Campaign Manager, Erica Perkins), from Towns, as well as several voters.

Numerous blogs and online news-sites picked up the story too, raising the pressure.  I'd been watching it for a week because I thought, at some point, something would have to give.  Well, today, something did ...

As of this morning, the post is removed from the official Kevin Powell for Congress blog.

It seems the Kevin Powell for Congress campaign has finally, after a week of bad press and dozens of negative online comments here, on KP4C, and elsewhere, had the good sense to remove their post attacking Ed Towns's campaign staff.

So let me take a moment to applaud the Powell campaign for finally, FINALLY coming to its senses.  Gutter politics by any other name is gutter politics.  And in this day and age, the last thing anyone should be doing is discouraging America's youth from getting involved to help change the system from the inside.  I don't care if you're a canvasser for Towns, or a campaign worker for Powell (like Michael Spitzer-Rubenstein).

The fact is the youth are in there trying their damndest; they should be welcomed by everyone of every age (even if you don't necessarily know what "hater" or "IMHO" mean).  And with Obama looking to re-shape the landscape of America for years to come, we can't afford to discourage one person.

But I'll offer one criticism.  No apology, no clarification, not even a replacement message explaining the deletion?  Nothing.

You know Kevin, you and your campaign have taken a beating the past few months for coming across as arrogant, self-righteous, and self-involved.  And IMHO, your staff hasn't really helped to reverse that, especially Erica Perkins.  In two responses I've seen online from her, all she has done is reinforce all those bad impressions.  At least Michael Spitzer Rubenstein tried to kill the ruckus on Friday the 15th, 5 days ago.  But for 5 days, Kevin, your campaign decided to let the pot boil over.

And now, in the middle of the night, you pull the blog without apology or explanation?

I think that final moves tells alot about your campaign.  You sit there, try to score points by attacking the youth.  You get called on it and your staff goes on the attack.  You get more and more negative feedback on how wrong your campaign was behaving.  Then like a thief in the night, you just kill the post and hope no one notices.

You know, a good candidate for office would have simply stepped in last week and killed this matter with a quick, honest, forthright explanation.  That would've been that, end of story.  Really!

But by leaving it up for 7 days (during which the bad press just kept adding up), pulling it now seems like you only did it because you didn't want any more bad press.  Not because you, or Erica, or Gene, or Michael or anyone over there actually thought attacking Towns's campaign staff was wrong.

Sadly, by winding up the matter like this - I'm not sure it'll change people's views on your campaign being arrogant and self-centered.  You probably still don't think you did anything wrong, and that's why there is no apology, no explanation, nothing.

But as you saw the past week, lots of folks out there do think you were wrong.  ANY decent human being can see that scoring points by attacking teen campaign volunteers is wrong!  And the fact you don't see that shows you are still either out of touch with folks, or just so wrapped up in yourself that you can't admit a mistake.

Either way, I don't think this kind of attitude is what Brooklyn wants its representative bringing to Washington.

You know, with all the blunders his campaign has been having, you would think Kevin Powell would be kicking it into high gear. It seems that his priority is not the campaign, but social events and book promotion tours.

It honestly makes me wonder if Kevin Powell is running for Congress to sell more of his "poetry".

Hey Slothman - Are you and Mary Alice Miller working in cohorts to drive up visits to room eight or something?

Hardly.  I'm just calling cowardice in Brooklyn politics when I see it.  This kind of behavior wouldn't last a second in Washington, from what I sense ...

Charlie, interesting.  Powell is now saying voters in Brooklyn can expect "21 days, 3 weeks, of nonstop campaigning, media interviews, fundraising, talking on the phone, emailing, and texting any and everyone I’ve ever met in my life to support me."

Except as you pointed out, for the 3-4 days in Texas to promote a book he isn't even the author of!!  Also funny that you have to register to comment now, in addition to pulling the other post.

Quick quick, everyone, retreat to the bunker!!  LOL!  Gimme a break.

I wonder if Kevin Powell is trying to catch up on his delinquent child support bills by going to Texas to earn some cold cash...although he seems too self-centered for that to be the case...Grow up, Kevin...!

Ed Towns Might Want to Tame His Staff

Today I attended a Women of Faith Reception organized by Rev. Cheryl Anthony for Congressman Ed Towns. After the reception, there was a press conference on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall with women who are endorsing Towns for re-election.

At the end of the reception, a woman said ‘They do not do anything for us.’ I asked her who ‘they’ were and what she wanted. As she was attempting to explain, another woman said ‘There is too much violence. Blacks are killing each other, especially the men.’ I asked this woman if she thought crime is an issue for Black women. She said, ‘Yes.’ I asked her ‘When Black leadership says politicians should address Black issues in order to get the Black vote, does that list of Black issues include crime?’ Before the woman could answer, Karen Cherry, one of Towns staff members barged into the conversation with a loud voice saying, among other things, ‘This is not going to happen here.’ Confused, I asked her what she was talking about. Cherry, continued to talk incoherently, in a loud voice, and became belligerent. I am a big woman, but Cherry is 3 times my size. So I walked away, saying to her, ‘Mam, I am walking away because I have home training and you are rude.” A good 30 people witnessed Cherry's outburst.

The woman who invited me to the event, Rickie Dillon,  had never seen anyone address me in the manner Cherry had. She asked me if I was all right and was so concerned she wanted to stay with me.  I told her I am all right, it is not my stuff; I am not responsible for Cherry's spiritual condition.

I called my editor and just vented.

Anyway, after the press conference, I had a chance to speak with Towns. After telling him of the prompt, professional service one of his staff members had provided for me on another occasion, I stepped to his side and whispered my concerns about the behavior of Cherry. Towns said that as a man of God, he did not approve of such behavior. He assured me he would speak to Cherry. I thanked him and said I only told him because he might want to know the behavior of a member of his staff, as it might reflect badly on him. I told him  I am not into writing gossip, and that I considered the matter closed.

I then told the congressman that  people are calling the paper asking for more information regarding the campaigns; that I am seeking to write about the records/ positions of each candidate and their vision for the future. I gently suggested a candidate debate might help. Towns offered to provide me with his legislative history and said over 26 years he brought a billion dollars to the district. I asked for a list of his earmarks. He assured me he would provide both. I gave him my card, and at the same time someone named Taquana asked for my card, saying she was with Towns' campaign.

I shook hands with Towns, we hugged, and cordially ended the conversation.

About an hour later, I called David, my editor, to give him an update. David said someone from Towns office, a Taquana, called to tell him how disrespectfully I had behaved. I reminded David of our earlier conversation when I told him about Cherry's behavior. We both laughed it off, because David, and anyone else who knows me, knows I do not go around creating scenes or causing trouble. For me, the incident was over-  until Taquana called the paper.

Message to Taquana:

1. You, Taquana, a no-name campaign groupie, have no authority. You cannot get me fired from Our Time Press. I am not an employee.

2. I will not allow you Taquana,  Karen Cherry, or anyone else to tarnish my professional or personal reputation.

3. Taquana, here's a word of advice- try minding your own business. If you don't have any business, get some.

Usually I do not get involved in minutia. But Taquana, as a member of Towns campaign, stepped over the line.

The 10th congressional race is too important to be reduced to such nonsense. Hopefully, Towns can reign inhis people.
