Remember Terence Tolbert

Today you may have many things on your mind, the Election, Barack Obama your own family and issues. All of which are important but today take a moment and remember my friend and a son of Harlem Terence Tolbert.

Born May 13, 1964 and horribly taken from us all last night November 2, 2008 due to a heart attack. He was a true Harlemite, a loyal brother, a brilliant political strategist and a friend to us all.May the Creator protect his soul, his family and all who loved him as I did.

More to come on my friend and brother.

What a tragedy.  Terrence was the consummate New Yorker.  He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Terence during Bloomberg for Mayor 2005.  He will be dearly missed.

...I thought "Son of Harlem" was Terrence Tolbert.

Billy Gelfond, Marty Soucie, Mark Bloom & now Terry Tolbert---all gone too fucking young.

Being young talent nurtured by Marty Connor is apparently not the best thing for one's life expectancy.

I've just made a doctor's appoinment.

Terrence gave the appearance of being so laid back, partially because he was so laid back (he once dragged me out on an election day where he was running the black operation, to help him personally supervise the purchase of fried chicken for his campaign crew), that one could could easily underestimate him.

One underestimated Terrence at one's peril. He may have looked something like a Ninja Turtle, but he was a Kung Fu Master.

But most notable about Terrence was neither his smarts, his good nature (he could call someone a pimp and make it sound as if it were a complement, which it sometimes was), nor his abilities as a confidence man, but his sense of humor.

Along with Tish James, who once told me I'd been a black man in a prior life (although, given Tish's experience with black men, this may not have been a compliment), Terrence, who told me I was the only white man who deserved to wear a "Got Meleanin?" T-Shirt (and gave me one, which I've lost) was the person who inspired Gatemouth's original bi-racial persona.

And though my Harlem experiences (East Side) long pre-dated my acquaintance with Terry, I must admit that he taught me much of what I know about minority politics (including how to play whist-spit) partially by his insistence that I join him on election day because he needed a white man to hold the money and I was the one he wanted because there was honor among thieves.

Terry, I love you.

I was shocked and deeply saddened  by the tragic untimely death of my friend Terrence Tolbert. My heartfelt sympathies goes out to the entire Tolbert family.

I first met Terrence in Albany, when we were both chiefs of staff to our members of the NYS Assembly. With a quick wink of an eye and a smile, you always knew everything was going to be alright.

I thought I loved politics. Terrence's love of politics and public service  inspired many of us to reach the stars. Whether it was Assemblyman Wrights re-Election or  John Edward's first presidential campaign, or working at the NYC Department of Education, You could always find Terrence working his PDA advocating for his mission.

Many times I would hustle downtown to my office at 250 Broadway, I would always run into Terrence at the DOE entrance near City Hall Park, where he would always take the time to discuss our quixotic lives in this world of politics.

I for one count myself very lucky, that Terrence and I had the rare opportunity to share laughs with lovely wife, our friend Kevin Wardally and other friends at Keisha Whooten and Luther Smith's wedding this past summer in Miami. I shall always treasure the memories.

I know how proud Terrence was to be working heading  Nevada for Obama. he just loved it.

I know, none of us can ever fully understand why this happened to  our  great friend at this great time in our lives, we will never know.

But there is one thing I do know, Terrence lived and died doing what he loved best. Now he will most certainly be helping God organize heaven.

May God Bless you brother and may God accompany all of our sentiments to your family and friends with his mantle of love.

Yours I remain,

I met T in Albany when I first began working for the NYS Assembly over 10 years ago.  He was, in true Tolbert style, a man you had to love.  While he liked to act cranky, he had a heart of gold, was deeply committed to the community, and had incredible insight into the functions of government.  I am shocked and saddened to hear about his passing.  My heartfelt condolences to his wife and family.  When I was out this morning voting, I did think about you man.  Rest in Peace.

PS - I will name my new Storm after you.

This morning I am emotional because I see that brother Terence succeeded in turning Nevada blue.  An extraordinary achievement, by a man I knew was extraordinary from the first meeting.  All peace to you Terence, and to all his loved ones.

Turning Nevada BLUE?  No biggie for "T".  What a legacy to leave behind.  I have known Terence since Junior High School at IS 195 where his skills and abilities where displayed even at that young age.  We had the first of our many true "Harlem Boys" battles back then and he came out on top.  He became the salutitorian with a 97.6 average and i was third with an 97.3 average.  I never let him live that down.

Over the years we worked together both in front and behind the scenes to make sure Harlem was taking care of its own.  When he ran for District leader i lent support as he did for me during my City council run in 05. We both emerged UNvictorious but Successful none the less in our efforts and making his momma Dorothy and mine Dorothea very proud of their boyz.

Brother T I'm deeply saddened by the fact that you won't be here to see your dedication and hard works Blossom, but please know that you wont be forgotten and we are not done yet completing "OUR" mission.

From one Harlem kid from IS 195 to another:  I thank you and your family and you know that I GOTCHA

Rest in Peace

In the midst of such a wonderful political victory, I cry throught the day as I realize that I can't call my brother and congratulate him on his hard work.  You see, my personal hero has flown away and left us all.  Terry is my oldest brother and it saddens me to no end that I will hug him no more.  I will hear his voice never more.  He was a brave and fearless lion in my life.  I cannot express the depth of gratitude that I have for my Creator for giving him to me at all.   As a Tolbert I want to express my gratitude to all who have taken the time to share your wonderful thoughts and memories of him here on this site.  It warms my heart but does not surprise me to know that he was so loved and revered.  As do all of you, I love, love, love and already miss my fiercest and most courageous lion.

  NIGGER OWNERS MANUAL
Congratulations on your purchase of a brand new nigger! If handled properly, your apeman will give years of valuable, if reluctant, service.

INSTALLING YOUR NIGGER.
You should install your nigger differently according to whether you have purchased the field or house model. Field niggers work best in a serial configuration, i.e. chained together. Chain your nigger to another nigger immediately after unpacking it, and don't even think about taking that chain off, ever. Many niggers start singing as soon as you put a chain on them. This habit can usually be thrashed out of them if nipped in the bud. House niggers work best as standalone units, but should be hobbled or hamstrung to prevent attempts at escape. At this stage, your nigger can also be given a name. Most owners use the same names over and over, since niggers become confused by too much data. Rufus, Rastus, Remus, Toby, Carslisle, Carlton, Hey-You!-Yes-you!, Yeller, Blackstar, and Sambo are all effective names for your new buck nigger. If your nigger is a ho, it should be called Latrelle, L'Tanya, or Jemima. Some owners call their nigger hoes Latrine for a joke. Pearl, Blossom, and Ivory are also righteous names for nigger hoes. These names go straight over your nigger's head, by the way.

CONFIGURING YOUR NIGGER
Owing to a design error, your nigger comes equipped with a tongue and vocal chords. Most niggers can master only a few basic human phrases with this apparatus - "muh dick" being the most popular. However, others make barking, yelping, yapping noises and appear to be in some pain, so you should probably call a vet and have him remove your nigger's tongue. Once de-tongued your nigger will be a lot happier - at least, you won't hear it complaining anywhere near as much. Niggers have nothing interesting to say, anyway. Many owners also castrate their niggers for health reasons (yours, mine, and that of women, not the nigger's). This is strongly recommended, and frankly, it's a mystery why this is not done on the boat

HOUSING YOUR NIGGER.
Your nigger can be accommodated in cages with stout iron bars. Make sure, however, that the bars are wide enough to push pieces of nigger food through. The rule of thumb is, four niggers per square yard of cage. So a fifteen foot by thirty foot nigger cage can accommodate two hundred niggers. You can site a nigger cage anywhere, even on soft ground. Don't worry about your nigger fashioning makeshift shovels out of odd pieces of wood and digging an escape tunnel under the bars of the cage. Niggers never invented the shovel before and they're not about to now. In any case, your nigger is certainly too lazy to attempt escape. As long as the free food holds out, your nigger is living better than it did in Africa, so it will stay put. Buck niggers and hoe niggers can be safely accommodated in the same cage, as bucks never attempt sex with black hoes.

FEEDING YOUR NIGGER.
Your Nigger likes fried chicken, corn bread, and watermelon. You should therefore give it none of these things because its lazy ass almost certainly doesn't deserve it. Instead, feed it on porridge with salt, and creek water. Your nigger will supplement its diet with whatever it finds in the fields, other niggers, etc. Experienced nigger owners sometimes push watermelon slices through the bars of the nigger cage at the end of the day as a treat, but only if all niggers have worked well and nothing has been stolen that day. Mike of the Old Ranch Plantation reports that this last one is a killer, since all niggers steal something almost every single day of their lives. He reports he doesn't have to spend much on free watermelon for his niggers as a result. You should never allow your nigger meal breaks while at work, since if it stops work for more than ten minutes it will need to be retrained. You would be surprised how long it takes to teach a nigger to pick cotton. You really would. Coffee beans? Don't ask. You have no idea.

MAKING YOUR NIGGER WORK.
Niggers are very, very averse to work of any kind. The nigger's most prominent anatomical feature, after all, its oversized buttocks, which have evolved to make it more comfortable for your nigger to sit around all day doing nothing for its entire life. Niggers are often good runners, too, to enable them to sprint quickly in the opposite direction if they see work heading their way. The solution to this is to *dupe* your nigger into working. After installation, encourage it towards the cotton field with blows of a wooden club, fence post, baseball bat, etc., and then tell it that all that cotton belongs to a white man, who won't be back until tomorrow. Your nigger will then frantically compete with the other field niggers to steal as much of that cotton as it can before the white man returns. At the end of the day, return your nigger to its cage and laugh at its stupidity, then repeat the same trick every day indefinitely. Your nigger comes equipped with the standard nigger IQ of 75 and a memory to match, so it will forget this trick overnight. Niggers can start work at around 5am. You should then return to bed and come back at around 10am. Your niggers can then work through until around 10pm or whenever the light fades.

ENTERTAINING YOUR NIGGER.
Your nigger enjoys play, like most animals, so you should play with it regularly. A happy smiling nigger works best. Games niggers enjoy include: 1) A good thrashing: every few days, take your nigger's pants down, hang it up by its heels, and have some of your other niggers thrash it with a club or whip. Your nigger will signal its intense enjoyment by shrieking and sobbing. 2) Lynch the nigger: niggers are cheap and there are millions more where yours came from. So every now and then, push the boat out a bit and lynch a nigger.

Lynchings are best done with a rope over the branch of a tree, and niggers just love to be lynched. It makes them feel special. Make your other niggers watch. They'll be so grateful, they'll work harder for a day or two (and then you can lynch another one). 3) Nigger dragging: Tie your nigger by one wrist to the tow bar on the back of suitable vehicle, then drive away at approximately 50mph. Your nigger's shrieks of enjoyment will be heard for miles. It will shriek until it falls apart. To prolong the fun for the nigger, do *NOT* drag him by his feet, as his head comes off too soon. This is painless for the nigger, but spoils the fun. Always wear a seatbelt and never exceed the speed limit. 4) Playing on the PNL: a variation on (2), except you can lynch your nigger out in the fields, thus saving work time. Niggers enjoy this game best if the PNL is operated by a man in a tall white hood. 5) Hunt the nigger: a variation of Hunt the Slipper, but played outdoors, with Dobermans. WARNING: do not let your Dobermans bite a nigger, as they are highly toxic.

DISPOSAL OF DEAD NIGGERS.
Niggers die on average at around 40, which some might say is 40 years too late, but there you go. Most people prefer their niggers dead, in fact. When yours dies, report the license number of the car that did the drive-by shooting of your nigger. The police will collect the nigger and dispose of it for you.

COMMON PROBLEMS WITH NIGGERS - MY NIGGER IS VERY AGGRESIVE
Have it put down, for god's sake. Who needs an uppity nigger? What are we, short of niggers or something?

MY NIGGER KEEPS RAPING WHITE WOMEN
They all do this. Shorten your nigger's chain so it can't reach any white women, and arm heavily any white women who might go near it.

WILL MY NIGGER ATTACK ME?
Not unless it outnumbers you 20 to 1, and even then, it's not likely. If niggers successfully overthrew their owners, they'd have to sort out their own food. This is probably why nigger uprisings were nonexistent (until some fool gave them rights).

MY NIGGER bitches ABOUT ITS "RIGHTS" AND "RACISM".
Yeah, well, it would. Tell it to shut the fuck up.

MY NIGGER'S HIDE IS A FUNNY COLOR. - WHAT IS THE CORRECT SHADE FOR A NIGGER?
A nigger's skin is actually more or less transparent. That brown color you can see is the shit your nigger is full of. This is why some models of nigger are sold as "The Shitskin".

MY NIGGER ACTS LIKE A NIGGER, BUT IS WHITE.
What you have there is a "wigger". Rough crowd. WOW!

IS THAT LIKE AN ALBINO? ARE THEY RARE?
They're as common as dog shit and about as valuable. In fact, one of them was President between 1992 and 2000. Put your wigger in a cage with a few hundred genuine niggers and you'll soon find it stops acting like a nigger. However, leave it in the cage and let the niggers dispose of it. The best thing for any wigger is a dose of TNB.

MY NIGGER SMELLS REALLY BAD
And you were expecting what?

I first met Terry in Albany Jan 1989.  We were interns togther.  He in the Senate, me in the Assembly.  One of the first nights we were in Smallbanyville we found our way to a reception and were watered and fed very well!  Glenn, Mike, Terry and I had a lot of fun that year; it was a great experiance and I still have many fond memories.

I think Terry must have been needed in heaven, cause a person with so much heart love an smarts will be sorely missed here.

God Bless you Terry, and God Bless your wife and family.

Terence,

I will always remember working with you in 2000 in Louisana for VP Gore. As only new yorkers could do. Vinny from Brooklyn & Terence from Harlem got the job done. You will be missed my brother.

Father Mychal Judge, FDNY Chaplain that died on 9/11 said a prayer to all of the firefigters. It goes like this.

Lord take me where you want me to go, Let me meet who you want me to meet, Tell me what you want me to say & keep me out of your way.

Terence you followed your dreams to win back the white house.         God speed my brother

In search for a true maverick, I found those characteristics in Terence. He was found to be a lone dissenter, an intellectual, an artist, a political figure, who took an independent stand apart from his associates.  He was that true maverick!  He was also a visionary who saw the future and had hopes of so many of us being there.  He was a leader who charted a path that would direct us to that future.  He was a mentor who saw us with a hunger then fed us.   He was a soldier who fought for causes, both good and thoses deemed as loss causes.  He was a humorus, who taught us to laugh at life's imperfections.  He was a friend who was like a brother that always made himself available.

Terence's physical present will be missed, but for all the lives that he's touched, his presence will live long and strong thorugh us.

To all of his family, may God comfort you in His loving arms in this time of sorrow.  Take joy in knowing that Terence ran the race and finished his course and believe that the Lord is rewarding him, even now.

Faithful friends,

Diana Blackwell & Mary Jimperson

Terrence Tolbert helped run the 2004 Edwards for President campaign into the ground. I guess maybe he really didn't care that much because Edwards isn't black. Terrence told me that the only reason he took the Edwards job was that he was trying to prove to his former foes that he was worth something. He had the integrity of Benedict Arnold. His loss is no great loss.
