Kathleen Rice: Opportunist or Slacker?
The front runner for New York State Attorney General, democrat Kathleen Rice, admitted to Newsday on Saturday that she failed to vote for 18 years. Not one primary or election, since she registered as a Republican in 1984. It wasn't until she changed her enrollment to run in the Nassau County race for District Attorney in 2005, that she found her way to a voting booth. The question now about the presumed nominee is this. Does Kathleen Rice show up to vote only when it benefits Kathleen Rice, or is she just a slacker? Her campaign described this two-decade gap as a "youthful failing". A prosecutor for two decades should be able to come up with something better than that. So she tried - telling the New York Times, "My lifelong fight for social justice logically evolved into political participation, and that's a path many people take". A "lifelong fight for social justice" that took eighteen years to find a voting booth, just in time to vote for herself. I guess one could dismiss Rice, 45, as a political naif, unschooled in the world of politics enough to show up and pull a lever on election day. However, there is a money trail that shows otherwise. During Rice's tenure as an assistant district attorney in the Brooklyn D.A.'s office, Hynes' campaign disclosures show a series of campaign contributions Rice made to the bosses campaign kitty, which resulted in promotions to a six-figure salary. When the Daily News editorial board exposed that some of Hynes' A.D.A.s were violating the residency requirements by not residing in the boundaries of NYC, the Nassau County resident kept her six-figure job. I guess membership does have its privileges. The Republican nominee for Attorney General, Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan, told the New York Times he's voted in every election since he was eighteen. The other four candidates facing D.A. Rice in the democratic primary only missed an occasional election. No unexplained decades. I've asked people why they choose not to vote, with the typical response being "What's in it for me?" An honest answer, and choosing not to vote is their right. But ask yourselves...is this, the type of person who deserves your vote ? Hey copy editor. Lots of picayune details you have. I think the point of posting was that for 18 years Rice couldn't be bothered to vote. But now we are supposed to join her crusade. Isnt that the issue ? Ms Rice does seem to move to where the opportunites are best. Hey Copy Editor. Are you sure she's not a Montclarian ? This column is another hit job by the Schneiderman-supporting meanies. AG candidate Rice is a graduate of Touro law school. The answer is clear. Slacker !!! According to you Ms Rice moved around a lot. Maybe she didnt vote because she thought she'd wind up like O'Hara Didnt she work on that case for a decade or two ? Prediction: Rice will win the primary, but lose the election to Republican Dan Donovan. 1998 revisited. She probably had no interest in running until she started to. Before then it was the typical inconvenience factor that identifies over 50% of the population in this country not voting.

If she gets elected, at least she'll vote every four years. I''m not defending Rice but Copy Editor's comments pointed out that the only accurate part of your post was repeating the Newsday & NY Times story that Rice didn't vote. All the stuff about Hynes & Rice was inaccurate.

1994 democratic primary had one woman and three men. Naturally the woman won the primary, but lost the general election. Rice is running against 4 men, she will win primary. But against Donovan in November ?
Why so defensive about being ADA for Hynes. Wasn't she there for 10 - 15 years ? I'm voting, because I care. Eighteen years of not voting. Unexcusable. Rember, Hynes doesent lockup all his opponents.
