A Test for Conservative Party

Wednesday brought the welcome news that Matthew Long, the son of Conservative Party boss Mike Long was released from the hospital. Matthew Long was seriously injured in an accident while riding his bike to work during the transit strike.

It’s ironic that this occurred the same week, that Westchester State Senator Nick Spano introduced a bill would require the MTA to pay half of the strike fines levied against the TWU for illegal strikes, strikes like the one that was  indirectly responsible for Matthew Long’s injuries.

The irony comes about because Nick Spano has in the past, run for re-election with the strong support of the Conservative Party.  And since Spano won his last re-election battle by 18 votes, it can be fairly said that the Conservatives’ endorsement was responsible for Spano’s win.

So what will the Conservatives do this year?  Will they pour salt into Matthew Long’s wounds and continue to endorse Spano, whom the NY Post called the unions’ poodle? Or will they take a stand on principle and hurt the re-election chances of a Republican State Senator?

All Republicans support the interests of producers of New York City public services, many of the best paid of whom commute in from the suburbs, over the interest of consumers of NYC public services. Look at the pension deals, for example. If there had been a strike targeted at people in Westchester, it would have been a different matter.

This strike was provoked by the MTAs desire to cut down on TWU pension cost.  The same MTA had just negotiated funny money pension deals with the unions on the suburban commuter rails and State Island (SIRTOA).  A few TWU people live in the burbs but it is a very urban group.  Metro North and LIRR on the other hand are Masonic enclaves of entitle patronage.  If the MTA had been half as generous with the city workers as they were with the suburban there would have been no strike.

I would hope the Conservative Party chooses not to endorse him this year. I know Bruno wants to retain the slim GOP majority in the Senate, but with "Republicans" like Spano selling out his supposed conservative principles, it's not worth it. Hopefully the Westchester Conservatives have the moral courage to stand with their ideals.

All bicycle accidents occurring not during a transit strike are the fault of Peter Kalikow!

I'm curious. I got into a bicycle accident last week. Since there was no transit strike, who was responsible for my injuries? Couldn't have been me, right, Yoda?
