Terence's Exit Poll

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Terence Tolbert on the McCall general election campaign in 2002 and on Edwards in 2004.  A tribute to his leadership in Nevada this cycle can be seen in the exit polls (via Nate Silver).  Nevada voters reported a huge gap  between Obama voter contact and McCain voter contact:

% of Voters Reporting Direct Contact from Campaigns

State  Obama   McCain   Gap

NV     50%     29%      21%

Consumption Tax? (Sunday NY Times stupid)

An article in the business section of the Sunday New York Times is: "Just What This Downturn Demands: A Consumption Tax." It is completely, utterly wrong.

A recession/depression economy needs fewer taxes, for the simple reason that people have less money and can't pay them.

A consumption tax would kill consumption. New York City's many stores would be hard hit. An ailing Detroit would be knocked out. Who wants to buy a car--even a new, energy-efficient car--only to be socked with taxes? Who would buy a new advanced computer or a new advanced tv? More people would hang on to old, outdated, energy-inefficient clunkers.

Democratic Trickle Down

The domestic U.S. auto industry and state and local governments face a crisis. Sales for the former and tax revenues for the latter are collapsing, at the same time each face soaring health care costs for employees and (because of the rich pensions after early careers their employees receive) retirees. General Motors has said that absent assistance it will have to shut down by the end of the year; public services are about to collapse, and state and local taxes are about to soar, particularly in New York. The federal government could prevent the disaster by enacting a universal health care financing system at the federal level, providing a choice of a public program such as a less extravagant version of Medicare and a similar subsidy for the purchase of private insurance. Such a system would lift an enormous weight off both older corporations with many retirees and state and local governments, more than enough to offset the taxes that would be required to fund it, and federal aid in other categories that states and localities could thereafter fund themselves. But there is a political party, and powerful interests backing that party, that stand in the way, because they have such a sweet deal under the existing system. I refer, of course, to the Democratic Party, the auto industry, and public employee, auto industry and health care unions and lobbyists.

Statement Regarding Passing of Council Member Philip Reed

QUEENS, NY- New York City Council Deputy Majority Leader Leroy Comrie (D-St. Albans) issued the following statement today regarding the death of former Council Member Philip Reed:

“I want to offer my sincere condolences to the family and many friends of my former City Council colleague, Phil Reed. I was saddened to hear of his passing today but I, like many others will take comfort in the knowledge that Council Member Reed led a remarkable life. He was the epitome of a sincere and dedicated legislator who fought for important issues and he leaves behind an important body of work that will benefit generations of  New York City residents. His fight to address asthma rates in poor communities, increasing affordable housing, saving the Museum of the City New York for East Harlem and the renovation of local schools are just small part of his legacy.

“I will remember Phil as an ardent and highly effective chairman of the Council's Consumer Affairs Committee and I was proud to work with him on passing legislation dealing with pay day loans. As the current chair of this Committee, I feel fortunate to have learned so much from him and honored to be continuing his work in advocating on behalf of consumers rights in our City.

“Most importantly, I will remember Phil as a courageous gentleman, who faced his personal battle with AIDS with the quiet kind of dignity that we should all endeavor to emulate. His greatest legacy will be that as an African American who lived with the virus, he raised much needed awareness, education and tolerance in our community. Phil demonstrated that he would not allow the disease to be the epitaph of his life, but rather a footnote in the life of a warrior for his community.”

City and State continuance of Theft

So...I just finished my meeting at Councilman Oddo's office regarding THEFT.

Here is what happens in our great City.  The fact that I brought this to an Attorney for trial by jury, means our local organizations can't handle reported and documented THEFT.  Do not forget Theft comes in many ways - time, services, false records, spending etc - in this case all of the above and more.  Condescending remarks, Lies and Threats - with Witnesses well documented and yet to be denied, doesn't really matter on a campus that talk of freedom of speech, but is well known for their threats.  And early on when I went to The DOI and they advised me they only "assign cases" - I thought that was bad.
