I said most of what I wanted to say on this issue last year, so there is not reason to post more on it. But I will say this.
The CP issue was a battle for scarce street space between two sets of privileged elites both of whom drive: the political placard crowd, and the taxi/black car/limo/$500 per month to park no problem crowd. The latter were willing to kick back a few bucks to us for transit, the former is not.
I will leave it to the CP opponents to fund the MTA hole. And I am so very pleased that CP was defeated by the State Assembly, and not the City Council, because it is the Governors and State Legislature who have created that hole, and I want the backlash against whatever is coming to go to the proper location. (My worst nightmare -- CP would be approved, and the approvers would be given a pass on what is coming).
In the meantime, drivers over free bridges with access to free parking do not pay to travel to Manhattan during weekdays. Neither do cyclists, so they are even. Pedestrians pay to take transit, so they are behind. But the drivers take up a whole lot more of the space. I think that space needs to be reallocated more fairly.
