You are, I assume referring to Grand Street. It ain't what it used to be, but it's still 1,300 Orthodox or de facto Orthodox votes (it was once much more).

And most, if not all,  of the district's Mitchell-Lamas, are still Mitchell-Lamas (Grand Street predates that program), with Mitchell-Lama populations. Moreover, the NYCHA projects are still NYCHA projects, with NYCHA populations.

You are right, the district is changing, but the candidate embodying that sort of "change", Barack Obama, the most charismtic man in America, managed only 38% here, so the change is limited. You can chart it on a map. And Mr. Newell is not among the most charismatic men in America, or in the district; for that matter, he's probably not even the most chrismatic man in his apartment.

You are correct that such change has made a big difference. Ten years ago the candidate for "change" wouldn't have gotten much more than a quarter of the vote here. But, running a campaign dedicated to the new voters won't put a candidate over the top.

Mr. Squadron, whatever I may think of him, understands this. I'm not so sure Mr. Newell does. More's the pity. Given some of the possible successors to Mr. Silver in Albany, I'm not so sure I could bring myself to vote for Mr. Newell. But, I would like him to do well. While his candidacy is in itself useful, a landslide defeat may send  exactly the wrong signal to Albany. I consider this piece a friendly bit of intervention.

As to Mr. Henry, if he cares about the things he professes, he should just leave. To tastelessly use a local metaphor, there are not two towers here, only one. There is no need for a second kamikazee--especially since the pilot seems far more likely to hit the other plane before he hits the ostensible target.

Pardon me for thinking this may be the idea.
