The bottom line is, we have a representative of a minority of the minority of those eligible to vote in a primary (those who bothered to do so).
So how about this. What if we had instant runoff voting, with people identifying their second choice candidate, and the second choices of those not in the top two applied to the totals for the top two until someone hit 50 percent? Who would have won then? Would anyone have been more likely to vote for Owens if they did not have to worry they were throwing their votes away? And where would the second choice votes have gone?
