First Jerry, that is why I said vouchers should only go to poor kids in failing schools. Second, No Child Left Behind already provides a mechanism for any kid to transfer to another school, but only if they have room. So, nothing new here for white suburban school districts. Nor am I touting this as a winning issue in the suburbs, where the schools tend to be fine.

It is, however, a way to begin a relationship with minority voters. Nothing will change overnight, especialy the country club mentality of many republicans. But it's not only the right thing to do, it's the smart thing to do.

I don't know how the GOP in Florida or Michigan is selling vouchers, so I can't comment on the politics of it in those localities. What I do know is that we have no other strategery to reach out to minorities with and this is an opportunity for us to serve a need. If we get nothing for it politically, than I would call it an opportunity blown.

Follow up and follow through are key to building poltical loyalties. Neither republicans or democrats have done much of that with black and hispanic voters. There is disenchantment in the air and republians need to give people of color something other than an invite to a party if they want a wedge to capitalize on the failings of the democrats.
