STATEMENT BY TOM
CURITORE ON MITCHELL DECISION TO CHALLENGE PETITIONS
"By challenging the nominating petitions of his opponents, Ken Mitchell
has decided to subvert the democratic process and deny freedom of choice to the
good, honest, and hardworking people of the North Shore of Staten Island.
Although I am not surprised by this action, I am nevertheless appalled by it.
"In this country we hold elections, not coronations. The right of voters
to choose their representatives in government is not only undeniable, but
sacred. Yet the Mitchell campaign, in seeking to avoid the hurdle it fears
most-an open, honest debate on the real issues that impact all of us-has placed
greater importance on a grab for power than a push for transparent and effective
government. Mr. Mitchell's selfish desire for influence is so great that he is
willing to trample on the rights of all people from Rosebank to Arlington.
"I publicly call on Mr. Mitchell to put the people of the North Shore
first, and to abandon this reckless course of action immediately. Any and all
attempts by the Mitchell campaign to remove any candidate from the ballot out
of fear that other voices in this race are stronger than his, is an affront to our
tradition of democracy, and a slap in the face of every man and woman in the
49th Council district."
